[ claire hunter ]
Claire was not a big fan of socializing. The more people you chose to acquaint yourself with, the more people who could hurt you. She had a bad habit of caring too much for people. She'd get too close, and suddenly there would be a knife embedded in her chest. It was like everyone was lining up to get a chance to turn the knife and make the wound bigger. The blood stained her hands and dyed her clothes crimson, and yet she chose to continue to let others puncture her fragile body until it was full of holes.
Claire had one friend. Her name was Allison. But in about a year, Allison would have taken her turn at mutilating Claire's fragile being. When Allison approached her proposing that she introduce Claire to one of her guy friends, she didn't know what she was thinking when she said yes. That was just another ticket to a world of hurt.
"His name is Mocking Jay. He's a pretty cool kid."
It was a name she had heard in passing. He was in some of her classes at school. He had gotten injuries from some pretty reckless stunts in the past. Not to mention, he was the brother of the last two male tributes from Nine. Claire couldn't help but feel sorry for the poor guy. She couldn't imagine losing any of her siblings. They had lost their lives in such horrible ways, too. She would offer her condolences during their conversation.
Claire didn't know why she was thinking so hard about what to say. She probably wouldn't hold a conversation with this guy ever again. There was no need to put in so much effort for someone you only see every other day. Yet as she hurried to the square, she worried that they'd get off on the wrong foot or she'd do something embarrassing or come off as rude.
This boy will hurt you, just like all the rest did.
Claire grabbed the hem of her shirt to steady her trembling hands. Allison was standing five feet away, next to Mocking. There was no time left to decide her approach. She lifted her hand and gave a little wave.
"Uh... how's it going?"
