Secrets in the Wind {Rave

The breeze that morning was something of calm and peaceful. It pulled the cold air around in swirls all around district ten. It whispered in the ears of the people as it brought a chill to their spines, almost as if it were whispering their darkest secrets across the sky. Kira stood still in the breeze, staring forward as the swirls tugged at the loose strands of hair hanging out from her hat. It was an early morning meaning that any sane person wouldn't be crawling out of their bed and into the winter dawn. But of course, there were hardly any sane people in district ten for they were already up and mucking about in the streets to start the day with selling animals or perhaps even heading away from their own home to work at someone else's farm.

That was the case for the oldest Hillam daughter.

Her blue eyes scanned the empty space before her as she tried to find her secrets floating about. She so terribly wanted to grab them out of the air and keep them to herself. She didn't want anyone to know how she was feeling inside or the words she was thinking. They differed ever so much from the words she actually said. The young girl who acted so much older than she really was looked at the ground before her feet. If she didn't hurry to work, she would be late in making sure the cattle were doing alright. If she miscalculated one step she would be behind all day and most likely not receive the money she so desperately needed to keep her sisters alive and healthy. 

With one skeleton hand she grabbed her bony wrist and started walking. Most people knew to keep a few feet away from her while she walked her normal route. They understood if you stepped within Kira's direct path you would have to suffer for a five minute rant before she eventually let you go. It was a hard life to be so distant from everyone, but it was best for her sisters if she remained at home as the parent. She pulled her coat closer to her skin as another breeze pulled at her hair and taunted her with every secret possible. Her coat wasn't much protection at all from the weather sadly because she hadn't bought a new one for herself in two entire years. Two years since things were good... Two years before she had to take the same route to an old farm. Two years before she had to conform to the pack and snarl at anyone who passed her by. Two years was a long time for a person to change.

A foot crossed into her field of vision, pulling the teenager from her depressive thoughts. She narrowed her eyes but continued to walk, deciding it wasn't worth it. Normal people knew the way around her and she couldn't afford to be late. But that cold and breezy morning Kira wasn't going to meet a normal person who walked along the same path every single day. Rather she would meet someone new, someone different. Possibly, someone who could change her.

The unsteady differences of each morning's events clouded the portion of Tessa's mind, the part in which she knows certain things can be organized by letters, numbers and colours, while others are only able to be organized as much as everybody is willing to influence. Each upset pattern of uniform, environment and basically the entire neanderthalic fashion of her "family"'s idea of ordering their belongings was enough to drive her out of the house. Sitting on the porch of a barn house fit her needs better than wallowing in the unsatisfying mess that was the inside of her home, anyways. The hues of each miscoloured but unanimous cloud painted by the early lit sky greeted eyes better than the helping of loose sheets and clothing tucked everywhere mere feet away from her.

Nobody questions her frantic purposeful knack of picking up the loose bits around the home they all shared, besides, not much harm was induced from the upbringing act of moving a book from a table to a shelf in the order of romanized dating systems. Every so often, the book would find its way into her grasp for the entirety of a day rather than being tucked safely into a shelf, instead they would piggy back with Tessa on her trips to wherever. Sometimes books of adventures seemed to want to go on one themselves, and walking for nearly two hours was found easier with her nose stuck in the spinal cord of a book's binding rather than having it placed in the air.

Each rhythmic step was followed by her eyes tracing each sentence on the page, reading over it twice before moving onto the next. Analytically reading took more time than the simple read-through, and she still had time on her walk from the middle of nowhere to actual civilization. This sentence in particular spoke of llamas, such as the ones back in this house located an hour from where she was currently, and of time. Not exact time, but rather the relevance of time, and how moving and engaging in an activity made the time clocking away sink faster by relevance. How, by standing still, the feeling of each perpetual tick slowed to what felt like less than a minute, due to the lack luster events of being awfully boring.

The next sentence, on the other hand, spoke again of the llamas, which were doing of nothing of importance in the adventures of Freya, but the author felt the need to include of how silly these creatures were while ignoring the fact that King Deity was slowly but surely climbing his way to the top of Mount Olympus to enslave the golden fleece. Books of such annoyed Tessa, due to the sure lack of organization put into the thought process, because why was the impulse to include such small things as a llama farm or an ice cream parlour located on the edge of Senville anything necessary for the grand scheme of things. She continued to delve onto the next sentence however, as she could not fully judge the writing until the last word was read, but she still wished that Freya would be less of an uninteresting, flat protagonist, because there is a world in peril danger, while she is wasting whatever tiny amount of time before the flash freeze taking up the hobby of communicating with llamas.

It had not been a plus to which the author obviously did not take the time to research anything about llamas prior to reading them, as most of the common mistakes were easily notable by which the creator lost track of what was going on in the story. Despite the obliviousness of Tessa's attention for the outside world, the path she followed into the main streets was still navigated as simply as usual, by walking the path nearly every other day, it tended to become imprinted into the back of her mind. The only notable tack of thumb she picked up while reading and walking was the sound of her shoes tapping against the rocky pavement on each street located in district ten.

On the normal day however, she would reach the side of town she needed to attend her businesses, while reading and walking the entire time, without issue. Each rough transition to the next sentence by gaudy writers and ghastly critics were usually the only casualty in mind. In fact, very few things managed to reside into her mind besides the Intel from separate books, most times the very walk in its whole was forgotten, beginning to end, while she dug into the sentences on a page, beginning to end.

Needless to say, running head first into someone she had never seen before in her existence brought more than a simple shock. The over exaggeration of her head knocking against somebody else's had managed to unbalance her such as the word choices found in the passage that fell from her hand on reflex. Also powered by reflex, the string of "Oh, I am so, so, sorry!" fell from her mouth in an attempt to save whatever decency she still had among herself.

It was strange that the foot in her field of vision was not eagerly moving away from her like the normal routine. Instead the foot carried the tip of a book into her field of vision that was narrowly pointed towards the ground. Kira lifted her head as if to start yelling at the person who was about to cross her path too closely but it dawned upon her in that moment. The person crossing her path was not merely crossing it but heading full on into the poor teenager. By the time her brain had thought that tiny bit out, it was too late to act. The contact of her head against the stranger's head came as a painful shock to her. She gritted her teeth as she stumbled back, a fury so large growing inside her that one would feel sorry for the stranger. Kira was not in the mood to feel sorry or remorse for the idiot who ran into her. She probably should have just left and headed onto work but she did not function that way.

Her eyes scanned the stranger before her. It was yet another young girl like herself, perhaps maybe younger. It was impossible to tell and to be frank, Kira could care less about what age someone was. The girl sputtered out some generic apology that everyone probably heard a thousand times. This infuriated the anger that was already building up. "Oh shut up," the girl hissed out as she swung her head around in a dramatic motion. "No one really cares what you have to say at all. You are just one of those worthless pieces of slobs that live in this hell hole. If you really were fucking sorry then you would know that you shouldn't cross me. What kind of idiot are you!" She bit at her lips for a moment, trying to judge the girl as she spoke. It was impossible though because she had always lacked being able to decide what kind of person someone was from looks. Perhaps if she had been able to do that, she could drop the act of being mean and protect her sisters better. Of course though, she lacked any real talents.

The thoughts of a monster started to enter her mind as she thought. Kira knew that she needed to occupy herself with either the anger at hand or storming off to keep her mind at bay. "Who walks and reads a book anyway? Were you raised in a barn? Perhaps you are another expendable street baby stealing from others to make yourself look like your something and get a sense of false happening from appearing smart. Do you even know what those words say?" She took in a deep breath. She probably did not even know what the words within the book said. It looked like something that was more than the basic vocabulary of ten year old. She refused to let the other girl in on this secret though for she wanted to appear slightly more educated than what she actually was if she was going to ridicule the stranger for false reading.

It was just another secret to add to the wind. Something else to casually throw away for other people to listen to and discover. One of many that floated around her head and clouded her ears with things she wanted to forget. She could never forget though. Kira wanted to punch herself, why was she letting her mind wander so quickly in the brief seconds while she stared ahead. She needed an action, not just hollow  words. Not meaningless lies. She needed something to move the stagnant air that was circling her brain. To her, storming out was still not an option so she needed something else. The book. Her eyes widened and the idea to snatch the book away just to compare knowledge and perhaps even torture the stranger more came across her fleeting mind. With one quick movement she reached a slender and thin hand out towards the spine that contained the object of desire. Hopefully, she was quick enough.
