Gale was settled in District 2. He had been for nineteen years and in that time he hadn't even had any contact with Katniss or Peeta. He'd seen them obviously on stage in district 12 each year getting ready to train the new tributes and he'd seen the pretty girl and boy that were obviously their children. He still wondered if he had ever had a chance with Katniss.
He looked warily at his wife, a blonde lady that he'd met almost straight after the war. They had one child. Maya. She had blonde hair that was half-clipped up and half free-flowing. She was wearing a white dress with red spots on it. It was reaping day. Gale wasn't too worried about the fourteen year old being reaped. He did well enough in his job - a few television appearances occasionally - working for the Capitol from District 2. In fact he did so well that Maya had never taken tesserae in her life. And for that fact he was glad. She was only entered into the reaping three times this year. "how do I look dad?" Maya said spinning round to look at her father. He looked at her sadly and smiled.
"you look gorgeous poppet," Gale said. Maya realised her dad was distracted.
"What's up?" she asked.
"Nothing. I just don't want to lose you that's all," Gale said. Maya nodded.
"Alright. I'll see you after the reaping," she said before skipping out the house. Gale watched her go. He had visions of a very familiar girl back from district 12. Prim. She was as innocent as Maya had been. Yet she had still been reaped. Ok, she wasn't as well off as Maya was but she was still only one slip among thousands. Gale closed his eyes and took three deep breaths. He knew Maya was going to be fine. She always was.
He took Melissa's hand and led her towards the square - the justice building where the reaping took place. When they got there, he stood on tiptoes to see Maya. She was stood among her friends. They were shaking with fear. They had all taken tesserae. Maya was doing her best to comfort them. Gale was proud of her trying to help. She had an instinct for things like that. Again like Prim. Gale closed his eyes again. he had to stop comparing Prim and Maya or he would be in danger of losing it and going insane.
When the district 2 escort stood on stage and started speaking, Gale tried to focus. he had to clear his thoughts. The peace of no hunger games didn't last long before they got reintroduced. Although district 13 had to give up two tributes too. "For the girls," the escort said. Gale opened his eyes and stared at the pieces of paper in the reaping balls. "Maya Hawthorne," she said. Gale felt his heart drop. Maya. Like Prim, she'd been picked. He watched as Maya walked up to the stage. She was composing herself well but he could see deep down in her blue eyes that she was scared. Scared stiff. And that was when Gale ran. he ran back to the house and picked up the phone. there was only one person who would be able to keep an eye on Maya - at least while she was in the Capitol and that was Katniss.
