Shots fire rough down the range. One. Two. Three. Four. I recall the reload instruction, and recite it the best I can. This is my fourth clip of practice bullets. Each round brings a closer shot on the target. Protective goggles on my face, covering my eyes. Protective headwear, shielding my ears. There is the option to wear the headwear that has the Captiol radio playing crisply in the headphones. I've recently taken to those so that practice is more relaxed. It's like working on your body at the gym. The action alone is not enough to keep your mind awake.
Like all headphones, even the ones with the radio in them, an alert is able to come through in case there's an announcement made. As if on cue, I stop firing to only have an announcement come through my ears. "Cadet T Orca and Cadet M Dunham, please report to the C.A.C for assignment." The announcements are not remote or at all rare. They occur ever so often, sometimes similar to one and other and sometimes different. But it was my name, I realise.
I take off the headphones and glasses so that I can take in the sounds around me, there are few others at the shooting range, but I don't check to see who. All that matters right now is that assignment. It could be anything.
The C.A.C stands for Command and Control, and it isn't at all as grand as it may sound. It is a simple desk with somebody behind who will hand us our badges that we will need, where we will then use to open the real weapon lockers. All of which is usually timed, but we have to be quick anyway. Because these are real.
I wonder whether Matthew heard the call? It is hard to ignore it, but difficult if you're sleeping away in the dorms. I doubt he'd do that though, he doesn't seem like the lazy type at all. In fact, he seems more like the type that would be waiting for the call on the edge of his seat. I stand by the desk and receive both of our badges, each with our own name on it. I wait near it for him, ready to hand him his so we can rush into action.
