Part I: The Visit
The morning is captivating. The sun is soaring, even at the lowness of sunrise. Tyren's eyes gaze out from his bedroom window, the small room that he and Alex, his non-identical twin, have to share. "It's quite the sight." A voice tells Tyren from behind, a family voice. He turns around to see Alex coming from the bathroom in nothing but his underwear. Tyren pulls a purposeful smirk, "Put some clothes on, you creep." as though Alex meant himself, but he joins Tyren to look outside at the sunrise, of which they can see straight from their windy. Not only that, but the light reflects perfectly off of the Dusty River, that runs straight past this old house that they have. Old is a word used for time, not appearance. The house itself is quite lovely looking, and houses Tyren and his two brothers. Alex, but then Tyler, his little three year old brother, who adores his elder brothers like one would expect. He idolises them, even at his young age. But Tyren and Alex were same with their father.
Alex pulls up his sweatpants and puts on a t-shirt with a hoody jacket to go over it. "It's the big move today, don't forget." He says, picking up one of the few boxes of clothes that are laid on the floor beneath his bed. All prepared the night before, even though their mother and father have been nagging them about it for the past week. Ever since the loving couple found out that the Mayor wants them to move in order to make more space. The Orca family is huge, and stretches quite wide. But the nearest members of the family stretch to around second-cousins. Alex carries the box between two hands, the contents only being light clothing. He probably could have taken two, but he's in no hurry. They have most of the day to get ready, because the rest of the family are still loading the giant van that is going round the three Orca houses. Each one, each pair of parents and their children, are packing into the same van because that van will unload into one house. One huge house to house them all. The Capitol's way of saying 'thank you for breeding'. But not really, it isn't a good thing. It means that the tax is higher, and everything costs more because the family will need to pool their funds. Three separate inner families contributing to the larger one. It isn't a foreign custom to them, but not one that has been forced before.
Coming up for another box, and another, then the final one, Alex didn't have much to ask Tyren, who seems to have packed his stuff and already taken it downstairs. I should really start getting up earlier... Alex thinks privately. "What're you doing today, then?" He asks Tyren, who's sitting on his bed in his casual jeans and t-shirt. "I'm going to see Joe. Get it done with." He reveals, which brings Alex to a stop, standing with the box in the middle of the room. "You sure about that?" He asks, concerned. "Absolutely. I need to. I have to know the truth about what happened, else we can't get over it." Alex raises a brow, quizzical of Tyren's attitude. "You want to get over it, then?" Alex says. "Well, yeah. He's our cousin." Tyren's face gives the look of What kind of answer were you expecting?, which he also thinks to himself. "Mmm." Alex lets out, not wanting to divulge an answer as of yet. Alex is rare to keep an opinion to himself, but it is a serious one to which Tyren might react badly towards. He knows Tyren well enough to foresee such a thing. Alex doesn't say anything more and nor does Tyren, who is fiddling with the bracelet that Matt, his best friend, got him. It's a thick black string with a bow and arrow symbol as a pendant.
Downstairs, there's a new addition to the house it seems. Alba, Max and Jasen. Alba and Max are both cousins of Alex and Tyren. All three being from different sets of parents. Jasen is a second cousin who only shares a relation through their great-grandfather. He is definitely the most distant of the Orca family, but still an Orca nonetheless. Alex hasn't met him before, though. So this is a first impression game with him. Alba is sixteen, Max is nineteen, Jasen is eighteen which is the same as Alex and Tyren who are also eighteen. Alex holds out a hand as he walks down the stairs, balancing the box. "Nice to meet you Jase." Jasen goes for it casually, and firmly shakes it. "Alex, is it, or Tyren?" He asks, with a joking face because he knows. Alex doesn't look as though he gets the joke, and says "Alex." with a pleasant smile. He nods at Max and Alba, who of course he's met many times before, again and again. The only outsider is Jasen, who has a rough stubble with the deepest Orca-eyes you'd even see, brown as usual. His hair is a dark brown as per typical Orca standards (except Max, with his light brown hair and blue eyes). Alba is the same. Alex puts the box down. Max looks up the stairs but remains standing. "Ty, come on!" He yells up, his voice authoritative as always, but light and quite calm sounding. Max is the only one with a work car, so he is going to take Tyren and Alba to the Hall of Justice, where Joe resides. In a cell.
Tyren comes downstairs immediately, clearly having nothing else to do. He nods at Jasen, whom he hasn't seen before. "Oh, that was quite quick actually..." Max states, with a tone of surprise. "Did you expect something else?" Tyren says, poking fun. He grabs his coat and heads to the door. "You alright Alba?" He asks her. It is her brother they are going to see, after all. The three take to the door and the cold breeze is welcomed by Jasen and Alex, who have been left alone apparently. "Yeah, I'm good." She says, as they walk to Max's car which is parked on the curb. "Nervous?" He asks. "Nope." She swiftly replies, as though it had bounced off of armour. They take their seats, Tyren in the back and Alba in the front alongside the driving Max. The car sets off with a steadiness that is welcomed, because it has been a while since Tyren has been in a car. It's not the same as the Peacekeeper Academy four-by-fours or the cars that the adults have. It's a work car, and so it is a little cheaper and feels that way. Every bump is felt, every knock. Hell, you could probably feel the flies hitting the windscreen. But it's a welcomed contrast.
Nobody can fail to be daunted by the Hall of Justice. The big bold words, and the dark walls. They step out of the car and onto the pavement which has weight because they know what they're going to go and see right now. The time is knocking on, and they don't have much of it because of the big move, though.
They walk in, Max waits in the car though, pulling out a newspaper from the car's side door. "Wait. Only one of you." A peacekeeper holds his hand out at Tyren and Alba. Alba grabs Tyren's shoulder lightly. "You go. I've had plenty of chances, I'm sure he's guessed I don't care by now..." She says, resorting to waiting on the chairs outside. Tyren nods at her, "Only if you're sure." And goes with the peacekeeper into the visiting room. He's not there yet, but the footsteps echo in the hallway opposite. He'll be here in a matter of moments. What am I even going to say? He thinks to himself, sitting in the dark room, lit only by the light above. A panel splits him and the empty seat opposite, until the door opens and he sees Joe, who has a few additional cuts to his face that have been pathetically stitched as though nobody cared. He looks awful, his thoughts ring out. Joe doesn't have anything to say. He just sits, cuffed at the hands. After a minute of silence, and the closing of the door... "I'm... So sorry." He comes out with it. "What did you do?" Tyren says, almost callously. "I... Just ran. I couldn't stand it anymore." Tyren looks displeased. "Tired of what? We have it good here." He states, hit tone quick and dismissive. "The peacekeepers, seeing you and Alex try to become one... Your dad?" He lists. "I couldn't stand seeing how our whole family was falling into the Capitol's lap." He sounds wise, but he's only seventeen. "You're so wrong. So, so wrong." Tyren speaks. "My dad loved you. Like a son. Do you have any idea what you've done to this family?" He questions him, almost like an interrogation. "Probably. You've all put me under the rub, I know that. Even my own sister hasn't visited me in all the time I've been here." Tyren doesn't crack the grin he wants to. "She's outside." That peaks Joe's curiosity. "I've got two more minutes. Have you got anything else to say?" Tyren asks, impatience getting the better of emotional judgement. "No. Only that I'm sorry. I can't say any more."
"Good, I'll relay the message." Tyren says, matter of factly.
He leaves out the door, and Alba can tell just by the way he moves past her with a stern face, how the whole thing went.
When they return to the house, they walk through the door to see all of the boxes stacked and ready, something they didn't expect. But Alex nor Jasen are to be seen nearby. Maybe they finished earlier and are having a break. "Well, they did our job for us." Alba says, breaking whatever ice there was. There wasn't any in then others eyes though. That's just how she is, it seems. "Not quite..." Max says, seeing Francis and Cecilia, Tyren and Alex's parents, pull up in the big van outside. The others must be in the back or something. Maybe in Uncle Mikes car. Maybe even at the new house already. It will be all of them under the same roof. Hard to think that they would be able to live like that, but apparently they can. "Here comes trouble." Tyren mutters as the handle turns and the couple enter with expectant faces. Quickly, Jasen comes out from the back bathroom near the kitchen and Alex from the stairs. Maybe they were avoiding each other. Most likely due to the fact they didn't know each other before today. "Well, don't just stand there. Get moving you lot" Cecilia says with little Tyler in her arms. "Tyren, take your brother." She commands, holding him out. Tyren accepts him and everybody seems to step into pristine motion. Alex goes first and loads the van with a few crates before hopping in and being the loading man for the hour. Everyone, spare Cecilia and Alba, starts handing Alex crates. "Could use some strong hands up here." He says to Jasen, who smirks privately and hops up as well and helps.
"Check out those two, working together." Tyren mentions to Max in a whisper as they enter the house for more crates. "I know right? Strange how our family gets along." Tyren is oblivious to the fact that Max is carrying only one crate at a time. As though he is reluctant to load the van. It's a subconscious thing, it seems. He's moved house twice, once when he turned nineteen and again when his temporary housing was shared with a criminal. Not him, of course. But that didn't stop the peacekeeper from suspecting him.
Soon enough, everything is loaded and they can set off to the new house. What a venture.
