Female - District 10 - Fourteen
I grew up on a ranch in District 10, and I really did have a great childhood. Playing in the meadows with my siblings, taking care of the animals and helping on the farm. Yes, I had a terrific childhood. My life is particularly the same as it’s always been. I live on a big ranch with my family. We breed livestock at our farm, mostly cattle. We have a few horses too, they are mostly used to heard. My parents doesn’t like it when us siblings get to attached to our horses, because eventually, they will have to be slaughtered. I sincerely hope that day isn’t coming soon for my horse. His name is Frost and he’s my best friend. He's palomino and such a beauty. I know it sounds silly, but it’s true. I ride all of my familys horses though, I've got a lot of free time and my mother always said I'm one of the most naturally talented riders she ever seen. I usually train the youngsters when they get in age, before handing them over to my siblings
I had another horse when I was a child. A pony, he was called Reef. It was so devastating when my parents finally decided to send him to slaughter. They said I had outgrown him, and my younger siblings all had their own horses. That can still get my down at times, but I try to think about the positive consequences, like the fact that I got Frost instead. It sounds horrible, doesn’t it? Living on a farm, you somehow have to get used to the fact that animals are just animals, even if they are your best friends. It is confusing and I hate it, but I’m powerless. If my parents decide they want to take Frost away, there’s nothing I can do about it. When they took Reef to slaughter, I sat on his back crying until they managed to pull me away from him. To be honest, that didn’t take long since I was seven years old.
I learned not to get too attached to the cows though. As a child, I always used to play with the calves, but I don’t anymore. I don’t want to get a personal relationship with them, I’ll just end up suffering. Once, Me and sister freed all our cattle just before they were supposed to go to slaughter. I was only about 8 years old and didn’t understand the consequences this would have on our family. Luckily, my older siblings and my parents manage collecting all of the cattle that had escaped. My father was completely furious. I see now that sending the cattle to slaughter is necessary for our own survival. It’s horrible that it has to be that way, but we have to but our families best interests first.
My family is the most important thing to me. Our family is huge, I have 8 siblings. I am the fourth oldest, which means I got five younger siblings. My youngest brother just turned five years of age, and my oldest sister is 20 years old. We’re five girls, and four boys. Our family is rather wealthy. It’s not like we have those fancy clothes like you can see those people in the capitol wearing, but we manage. But to be such a large family, and still manage without starvation is to be wealthy here in District 10. We share our ranch with my uncle and his family, but we live in two different houses. Their family is smaller than ours, just 4 children and the parents. My cousins are almost like some extra siblings though. My grandmother lives with us to, she’s very sick and old. She mostly stays in bed all day. Sometimes she sits on the porch and yells rude comments. She hates my mother, because she didn’t agree with the marriage between my parents. My mother came from a much less fortunate family, but my father fell in love with her and married her anyways. Grandma isn’t very fond of us kids either.
When I grow up, I want to have an own family as big as mine. Hopefully, I’ll get to take over part of the ranch. Maybe we can build some new houses, and all of us siblings can share it. I hope for the ranch to keep growing, so me and my family can have a good life. I love animals, so I want to continue working with them.
As you might have noticed, I’m a rather loyal person. I surround myself with people I love, and I keep them as close as possible. I’d even claim that I’m very friendly. It isn’t always the best characteristic though, I can be very naive. I see the best in people, and sometimes, I end up getting hurt. Stabbed in the back. When such things happens, it hurts. I won’t let it destroy me though. I’m a rather simple-minded girl, not very complex so to speak. I often speak my mind and do as I please for the moment, even in the wrong situations. This has gotten me into rather tricky situations, like the time I freed all of our cattle. Not my proudest moment, but it seemed like a good idea at that point.
I consider myself to be a very mature person. I take care of my siblings, I help out at the farm without complaining. Not at all. My older sister says I’m childish. I don’t know why. She says I’m so innocent, like a little child. It bothers me, because I hate it when people are trying to make me look smaller than I am. I don’t agree with her though. Maybe she just says it because she knows it gets to my head. Maybe she thinks so. I don’t know.
I look regular. I’m the girl next door type. It’s not like I’m ugly, but I’m not the girl who turns heads either. I got long blonde hair and blue eyes. My skin is pale, but not that corpse-alike pale that you see some people with. I’m rather short, about 5’3”. I got puffy cheeks, hopefully that will go away. I don’t like it because it looks childish. I’d like to look more like a grown woman, maybe boys would fancy me more if I did. I never had a boyfriend. My sister, Juniper, that is just one year younger than me already had two. She’s my little sister. How can she be more popular than me?
I like to wear girly dresses though. It kind of supports my girly image, but I like it. With flowers from the meadow in my hair, I think it’s beautiful with nature inspired-style. We can’t afford buying a lot of beautiful dresses, but I get some that my older sisters has grown out of. Sometimes my mother find beautiful dresses from when she was young. I always get them, it makes my sister jealous, but my mother knows how much I love them.
I’m Poppy by the way, Poppy Wood.
