The cool wind blows and a young girl looks up. She'd fallen asleep on the shore line again. The water was about to reach her and had that wind not blown the water would have woken her up. She sits up looking out at the water around her. A smile forming on her lips as she rubs her eyes. She should probably get home before everyone else worried about her. Not that that happened very often. A hand touched her shoulder as she was about to run and she looked up to see a young girl. "Mara its alright." "You didn't come home so I...I got scared. Mommy said you might be down here." "And Maris was right." The younger girl reached up her arms as the older stood up. "come here" A giggle escaped the girls and the older picked up the younger. A moment later an older boy met them at the door. "Lan you really need to stop doing that." "Ko I get home on time don't I. I mean to go to school and everything." "Yes but you worry the rest of us like no other." "I'm sorry, I'll try to remember not to fall asleep on the bench. But I had been waiting to see Dad's ship come in." There was a nod of understanding and they entered the house. Everything turned black
A seventeen year old girl woke with a start. She took a deep breath and shook her head. She really hated having that dream. It was seven years ago. Seven years ago her father went out on a fishing trip and never came back home. His ship was downed and no one ever found his body. Everyone else was brought back up but not her father. She had hoped that he would be back any day now. She never wanted to believe he was truly gone because that left her with a stepmother she hated. Kailani was born to Marcus and Marie Sedna. The two were children of fishermen and fish sellers alike. They took pride in their work even if it didn't bring them very much money due to the fact that the capitol got most of it. They were good at what they did. Kailani learned how to sail from her father when she was very young. When Mara was born Marie fell in and died a year later. Kailani couldn't understand what was going on and her older brother was the only one that could keep her calm while they took care of Mara. Kona and Kailani were they only ones who would even look at Mara for her first two or three years of life. Maris came into their life then. From the start Kailani couldn't stand the lady. Marcus said she would get used to her but that never exactly happened. Both women seemed to have this mutual hate thing going on. Kona would keep Kailani away and Kailani would usually be taking care of Mara.
Kona was eleven and she was ten when their father was lost at sea. That's when things got interesting. Maris came from a family of careers and she was pushing for Kona and Kailani to got into training almost the day after their father disappeared. Kona had said not and found a way to get out of going to training each and every day. Kailani refused as well but under threat of Mara being hurt and of Kona being sent away forever, Kailani had to give in. Least she did after being locked away in her room with no food for three days and not way to get out. It took her three days to devise the break out she commenssed on day three. Kona would try to get her food but each time he tried he'd be stopped one way or another by Maris. Kailani pried off the plank that had been boarding up her window for her punishment and broke open the glass. When she got out she was bleeding and in pain but she got out. It was that night that she and Maris got into a fight. It wasn't just a yelling match. Kailani had told Kona to take Mara who was five at the time to the grandparents home. Kona had come back in time to see Kailani fall to the ground. He ran to his sister but Kailani stopped him. He'd never seen her that determined and pissed off. He backed off and watched not listening to Maris telling him to stop his sister.
Maris ended up in the hospital in the district for three days. Kailani had beat her and the problems with Maris stopped. However, Kailani went to the training center. Maris for the first time in her life had tasted defeat at the hands of a little fishermen's daughter. She learned a valuable lesson and when she noticed Kailani at the training center weeks later it seemed that the two had come to an agreement. Kona followed shortly after. He wanted to protect Kailani and the two became a power house of destruction. As she grew older Kailani's beautiful dark brown hair and grey eyes set her apart from her peers. She would pull it back in training but when it was down she would let the straight tresses fall over her shoulder. She gave an air of mystery that way. It was dark brown while up but while down it was two toned naturally. Light brown towards the top strands and start underneath. Her slightly tanned complexion made her a sight to be seen. On the beach after practice coming out of the water many would say she looked like a goddess rising from the foam. She though everyone was crazy and Kona would just laugh. A happy family they had become. Of course to Kailani the only family she cared about were Kona and Mara who was growing into her own as well. Kailani looked like the spitting image of her mother according her her grandparents and Kona was their father in so many words.
These days Kailani still trains as does Kona but they have taken to the life at sea.Helping catch fish and scallops. Maris leaves the two be and has not once made a comment of forcing Mara into training like she had the other two. Life is just normal for them.
