Bufflebara - (Buttes, Cacti, Canyon, Desert) It's hard to believe that anyone would take the time and trouble to genetically engineer a species just for the mildly amusing name, but this is the Capitol we’re talking about, and they’ll do almost anything. Though some speciemens look a little more rodent-like, Bufflebaras usually take after the buffalo side of their heritage, making them very large and stocky and giving them painful-looking horns. All of them have the general facial construction of a capybara, however; their eyes, ears, and nostrils are on the top of their heads, allowing them to wade through deep water and keep an eye on their surroundings. Those horns are a force to be reckoned with, so watch out. 30HP. Classified as Large Game.
Cave Rats - (Ghost Town, Silver Mine)
Many people will tell you that bats are nothing more than rats with wings. These mutts give truth to that statement. Originally developed to light the way underground so Capitol operatives didn’t have to carry lights with them, these rodents combine the hardiness and dexterity of rats with bats’ wings, and their tail is bioluminescent (courtesy of firefly genes). They are exceedingly stupid, however, and could not be trained, so the Capitol gave up on them and left them to the caves. They were actually meant to be cleared out of the Arena, but they’re a pain to dig out of their crevices when they don’t want to be found, so the Gamemakers threw up their hands and said to leave them. It’s not like they’re very useful anyway. 5 HP. No food classification. Not Poisonous.
Deadly Stallions- (Buttes, Canyon, Cornucopia, Desert, River Bed)
Larger than your average horse, these mutts can travel at an extremely fast pace. Deadly Stallions were originally created by the Capitol as a mean of quieter transportation during the war. Their hooves are far stronger than that of a regular old steed, created by the Capitol so they could gallop over nearly any terrain. When rebels had began sneaking into Capitol areas and killing the mutts mercilessly, the Deadly Stallions' minds were configured to attack anyone who didn't fight for the Capitol on sight, posing as a potential threat to tributes. They are most likely found in shaded areas or near drinking water, ready to attack anyone who comes near. (35 hp. Classified as large game.
Jack Rattler — (Buttes, Cacti, Desert, Ghost Town,)
This mixture of jack rabbit and rattlesnake was used primarily to distract rebels; Capitol soldiers would let one loose across a rebel’s path, so that its uncanny rattling sound would serve as an ample diversion, allowing the Capitolites to swiftly capture or kill the enemy. This worked for quite some time, until word of the rattling rabbit and the misfortune it brought passed around the rebels, and it became common knowledge that if you heard its telltale rattling, do not investigate; instead, keep on alert and run in the opposite direction as fast as possible. Frustrated with their failure, the Capitolites gave up on the creatures and allowed them to run amok in the wild as they pleased, and soon it was not uncommon to spot a rabbit with the tail of a rattlesnake in some of the warmer district climates. Don’t get too close, though; its snake genes give the Jack Rattler a pair of pointy, poisonous fangs and a bite that brings quick death.
Poisonous. No food classification. 12 hp.
Kantutzan – (Buttes, Canyon, Cornucopia, Desert, River Bed )
Although the giant snake is cold-blooded, his resemblance to regular serpents ends there. In past Games, Kantutzan held his main job in the after-Games cleanup, prowling the Arena after being let loose by the Gamemakers to clear out all of the smaller, weaker mutts the Capitol produced. In fact, he does his job almost too well. With a head at each end of his giant body and the ability to slither over the ground at great speeds, he gobbles up any living – and often non-living - thing in his path with his giant fangs as he crushes his way through the landscape. Sensitive to changes in temperature, he sometimes likes to take shelter away from the sweltering heat in the shadows provided by the Arena.
40 HP. Not poisonous. No food classification. (Two attacks per post.)
Pitfall Lizard - (Throughout)
Part lizard, snake, and some trapdoor spider, this grotesque beast was originally designed to take out supply roads and other paths frequented by rebels. They were designed to dig networks of tunnels and caves under the specified area so it would collapse when enough weight was placed on it and perhaps kill the rebels involved with its lethal venom. However, these Lizards were deemed inefficient, given that their "traps" so to speak--nearly 25 feet deep, wide holes about two feet from the surface of the ground--did not always collapse, were not always dug in the right place, and were not always inhabited by a Pitfall Lizard to finish off any unfortunate being trapped. Like many of the muttations, the project was abandoned--however, few of the Lizards were actually found by the retrieval squads. These are completely inedible--even their bright orange eggs are poisonous. If you manage to get bitten, you have about three hours to live. 30 hp. No Food Classification. Poisonous.
Pygmy Cattle – (Throughout)
One crazy Capitol scientist was working on a project attempting to develop cows that produced lactose-free milk, frustrated by his own lactose intolerance. On the front of it, his work seemed like a complete failure: the resulting cows produced no milk whatsoever, and, to top it off, were roughly the size of a house cat. However, the meat they produced was not only delicious, but the Pygmy Cattle were easier to keep in smaller spaces and produced much less in terms of byproducts. Unlike their giant counterparts, the miniature cows, however, are very skittish and actually burrow, much like rabbits. (Must have completed Trapping station to capture.) 12 hp. Classified as Small Game.
Sabertooth Bat- (Ghost Town, Silver Mine)
At first glance, Sabertooth Bats appear to be regular bats. They come in various shades of black, brown, gray, and even reddish-orange, and dwell in similar types of places. If you saw one flying at you, though, the difference between the two species would be immediately apparent: protruding out of the mouths' of these Capitol muttations are two poisonous fangs that grow up to six inches in length. The Capitol combined the genes of large fruit bats, long extinct Sabertooth Tigers, and even a particularly venomous species of viper to create a creature with a wingspan of up to 6 feet with superior night vision, perfect for tracking rebels who may try to run under the cover of night. Their one weakness, though, is that somewhere in the mix they acquired glowing eyes; if you spot a luminous pair of orbs in the darkness, you may just have a chance to escape. (8 hp. No food classification.)
Scorpion Mite – (Throughout)
Large (drones average 6 inches, but the queens are up to a foot long), brown and ugly, Scorpion Mites have a typical scorpion body other than the claws, which are mysteriously absent. It's tail is also flattened to the ground. The venom from stings is somewhat toxic and hallucinogenic; however, it can only sting once, much like a bee. It's mouth structure is similar to a termite's, but much longer and at least a hundred times stronger, enabling scorpion mites to eat through most biological substances, most types of rocks, and some of the weaker metals. While under Capitol control, the Mites worked in colonies that often numbered in the hundreds, although these groups splintered off for unknown reasons, and now more commonly form smaller packs of five to ten. They are a hive mind of some intelligence, but not comparable to human level. During the rebellion the Capitol would drop colonies of Scorpion Mites on rebel structures. They would usually consume the structure in a matter of hours, usually killing more than a few rebels in the process. 5 hp. No Food Classification. Poisonous.
Whip-Horned Buffalo — ( Buttes, Cacti, Canyon, Desert,)
The Capitol scientists intended to create a breed of animals for riding that had the capacity to pick items up off of the ground while the animal’s jockey was still mounted. They initially intended to use horses, though the equine heads proved too narrow to support the pair of monkey tails added, so the Capitol settled on buffalo instead. The Whip-Horned Buffalo looks much like its American counterpart, the primary difference being the long tails that start at the base of each horn. It is slightly larger than the average buffalo, and those not born in captivity are temperamental, easily aggravated, and impossible to tame. It uses its extra tails as weapons, in addition to its horns and hooves. Not poisonous. Classified as large game. 35 hp.
Dire Coyote - (Throughout)
A derivative breed from the hell hounds, these nasty little creations aren’t just canine. They were created for one purpose- to shred- and the jaws are all alligator, with sharp teeth and the muscles to slam their jaws closed on a piece of prey and toss it around until enough pieces fly off to kill it. The name did come from somewhere, though, and the majority of this mutt is in fact canine in origin. The creature looks like a monstrous wolf- strong fighter, enduring runner. Just to add to the disturbing factors, the eyes are more vein than sclera, turning them red. The ears are long at birth and need to be cropped to keep from flopping dangerously close to the teeth; that trait is from the bloodhound genetics that allow the Hounds to track their prey even when it seems impossible to do so. For this arena they have been bred to have fur the color of sand, the better to blend in with their surroundings. However, the most disconcerting difference between Hellhounds and Dire Coyotes is that the latter creatures howl non-stop whenever they have found prey.
(35 HP. No food classification.)
Vraven (Throughout)
Originally bred to clear battlefields of the fallen, Vraven’s are a chilling mix of vulture and crow that have an appetite for rotting flesh. Capable of silently swooping down despite their impressive seven foot wingspan, Vraven's are dangerous mutts, who circle relentlessly while waiting for the right moment to strike. hough they haven’t been used since the dark days to dispose of corpses that the Capitol did not want to spend the resources to identify and bury, the gamemakers have decided that such a mutt perfectly fit the tone of the sixty-seventh arena. However, unlike their predecessors, these Vraven have been bred not just to go after dead flesh, but living flesh as well.
25 hp. Not Edible. Not Poisonous.
Prairie Runner (Buttes, Cacti, Desert, Ghost Town)
One of the more comical looking mutts to ever be produced, the Prairie Runner combines the dna of prairie dogs and roadrunners to make an animal the size of a small dog that can run at surprising speeds. It resembles a feathered rodent with unusually long hind legs. Once envisioned as a breed of exotic pets, the prairie runner’s were abandoned when it became apparent that they had a tendency to run away with their owners belongings in tow....
N/A hp. No food classification. Not poisonous.
Tusken (Cacti, Cornucopia, Desert,River Bed, )
A frightening combination of peccaries, wild boars and oxen that are about the size of a pony, Tusken’s were originally envisioned to be genetically engineered livestock in the capitol with the meat being flavored somewhere between pork and steak. However, the flesh of the Tusken turned out to be too tough and the Tusken were abandoned in the Open Forest. A few years later, reports of fiercely territorial creatures killing native animals in the woods were confirmed to be true, and several Tusken were captured. The wild animals were considered perfect for the arena, because their two tusks and two horns had grown unchecked to deadly proportions while they had been free. As a result, most Tusken have four bony protrusions that curl around each other before ending in a single wicked looking point. 20 hP (Classified as Large Game) Not poisonous.
The Scorpion King (Special Circumstance)
As seen with the Dragon hailing from the previous games, or the Jabberwocky from the games before, Bigger is better. Emperor scorpions generally grow to somewhere between seven and eight inches long, though the largest specimen on record is around nine inches. The King scorpion, which was specifically bred for this arena by breeding aggressive Emperor scorpions and then subjecting them to rigorous growth hormones. The single scorpion that survived all of the testing is a whopping nine feet long. This monstrous arachnid will eat anything that gets in its path, even actively seeking out large prey that it can slice and dice with its gigantic claws before pulling the bloody chunks into its fearsome mandibles. And as if that wasn’t bad enough, it’s long tail, from which drips a fast-acting paralytic venom is razor sharp, and longer than most swords. This scorpion is inhumanly fast and is capable of attacking two tributes a round with its various appendages. 55 hp. No food classification. Poisonous.~~Mutt Contest Winners~~
Protector Pecker (Cacti, Cornucopia) - credit to amillionarrows
The Protector Pecker looks just like an average wood pecker with some slight modifications. It can be quickly identify by its neon green feathers and red feathered crest on its head. Another notable difference with the protector pecker is its very sharp spear like beak which could easily drill into wood, cement or human flesh. They were originally used by peacekeepers in district ten and eleven to protect the farms from anyone trying to steal extra food. However, after a few generations, they began to attack anyone who touched the things they were protecting; including workers and peacekeepers. Their beaks are sharper than most knifes and capable of puncturing straight down to the bone.
8 hp. Classified as small game.
Nesting Spider - (Buttes, Ghost Town, Silver Mine) - credit to Pogue
When a veteran Capitol scientist observed his young son playing with a nesting doll he gained the next idea for a Games mutt. By mixing several breeds of poisonous spiders, as well as increasing the size of the creature, the mutt was born. However, the addition that makes the spider unique (and 4x as deadly), is the addition of a special sac inside of the spider's abdomen, used to store another Nesting Spider that is connected to the larger one. When (or if) the largest Nesting Spider is killed, the spider inside it's abdomen is disturbed, and as it has no host to depend on, it forces it's way out of the abdomen of it's once host, and immediately scrambles to find it's first meal (which, unfortunately for the killer, is usually them). Although each progressive spider that makes it's way out of the abdomen of it's host becomes smaller, each one becomes increasingly more venomous, making it a truly formidable opponent in the Games.
Poision, Edible, or Neither? Poisonous, non-edible
15 hp. 10 hp. 5 hp. Counts as one Mutt.
Cobbler - (Throughout) - credit to Moth
Cobblers are a splice between ants and dung beetles. Originally, they were created as almost living-land mines, burrowing underground in colonies by the hundreds. They were created to inform Desert Outposts of Trespassers, made specifically for dry, sandy areas. In the heat of the day, and cool of the night, they stay acute and aware. When the right amount of pressure is put onto even one Cobbler, a three second delay prevails before they all spring up in a heap, blasting non-lethal clumps of sand and forming a dust-cloud. The force of this temporarily blinds the victim. They are four inches in length, two in width. Their back four legs are significantly larger than the others, as these, along with their over-sized wings, are used for propelling themselves out of the ground. Their small pincers are indicators to one another, almost like a trigger. Their head is an oval-like shape with their 'eyes' placed atop the forehead, so they can see directly upwards towards the thin layer of sand. To prevent sand from entering their mesh-like perception-givers, they have a third transparent 'eye-lid'. Their wings and general torso is a blotched dusty yellow/brown, camouflaging among the sand.
N/A hp. Not Edible. Not poisonous.
