Name: Degan (Scarecrow) Annevelink
Age:16
Gender:Male
District/Area:9
Appearance: Degan is rather thin, much to his displeasure; and has a slightly crooked and sun burnt nose. His refusal to wear a hat in his time in the fields also lent him a freckled and weathered completion much more so than a boy of 16 should have. This gave him the nickname of ' Scarecrow' since he was terribly thin and looked as if he never left the fields. However, this didn't diminish his good looks. To many he was seen as to skinny, a bit to unsure to hold his head high and keep up appearances around the shacks. However, there was a certain sparkle to his emerald green eyes and a smile that could melt the hearts of even the peacekeepers; this redeemed him for the talk that always seemed to spiral around his family name. This along with his short-clipped, but dark hair gave him the boyish good looks that were sought after in so many;if it weren't for his skin that ruined it.
To save that for a further day, I must begin in describing what he wore generally, as it helped create his appearance most of the time, as if it was just a part of him as his weathered skin was. He always wore a pair of dirty green pants, that were always rolled up to prevent from dragging the ground; and a equally baggy white or cream colored shirt. He wasn't the shortest, but definitely wasn't the tallest boy pulling a plow in 9 and since his older brother was, he got stuck with shirts that were always baggy and pants that were to long. So he made the best of this and made it his signature outfit, not to mention the fact that it was cooler and allowed for more movement to hop over the occasional rock or skip over a sharp stone. Speaking of sharp stones, he tended to steer clear of these since he only got to wear shoes in the winter time. Degan's family was one of the poorest in district nine and only bought shoes when it would get cold enough to endanger the kids.
Personality: Scarecrow seemed happy most of the time, and he was; however there was always a part of him that kept himself down and when he was alone this seemed even more prevalent. He was always taught to keep his head up, and not show cowardice and have strength; most importantly to never take anything from anyone and this included pity. He seemed wonderful and amazing on the outside, but when alone his mind seemed to spiral into something he couldn't control. He never really got much time to himself, so he kept it from bothering him by putting every bit of his mind into work.
Degan had a great work ethic compared to most of the other boys, who just wanted to do what they had to and then run off. He always kept himself as long as he could with any task assigned. It wasn't that he didn't want to go home, its that home meant being alone and being alone was never a good thing for him. Due to his older brother and sister, he always got the low place on the totem pole anyways. Although, one place that he always felt safe, and as if his swirling mind was calmed was around his father. This made him seemingly attached to his fathers hip and he constantly was hanging around in the background; even if his father was with his own friends.
His father was tall as his brother and, more muscular, but always so gentle and talked so caringly towards Degan. Although, this father treated him like gold, he was expected to be tough as the ground they both plowed. Another factor that played into this, was the fact that his older siblings went into other trades; threshing wheat for his brother and separating it for his sister; this meant that Degan got full attention when it came to his fathers teaching. He never scolded the boy, or said a harsh word to him, so this lead to plowing being the one thing in the world that Degan was confident in and always knew what to do in. He was banking on that much for his future, to get him through till he could find a better job for himself.
History: Back to his family name, was the biggest chunk of Degan's problem as it was what drug him down into the worst of the poor in 9. Most of these people lived in shacks surrounding the fields, but the Annevelink's was one of the smallest and leakiest of all. His grandfather had gotten them into this extreme poverty and they were still trying to crawl up from the bottom. Degan was beginning to help and provide for not only himself but the rest of the family. However, it didn't help with his mental affliction since it meant more time was devoted to work , rather than to friends and things to himself.
It had always been this way, since he was a little boy. He loved to try and help his father, or even his mother around their shack. it's not that he didn't love toys, and even now he had a certain admiration for little play things. His plow played into this, since he always kept it shined, oiled and free of any dirt. It was his toy that he never had, and always, always brought it back onto their tiny porch when it rained; even though it was bigger than he was.
One thing that was always eating at Degan was the fact that he never seemed to bring enough money or food in. All the other people in 9 were skinny, but he and his family seemed to wain every year; even his mother had started getting sick during the winter. Now it was worrying him that the others were going to start getting sick. This attributed to his looks in the fact that it aged him, and along with browned skin and freckles; the only thing seeming young to him was his eyes, smile and energy. They had always been with him, even though these harsh conditions aged the rest of his body so much quicker.
