Florencia Cully
District One
The last few months had been hard; traveling to District 11 had only taken a week but that had been a long time ago. Florencia had come out here to help, to give much needed attention to the sick citizens of 11 who had been most unfortunate when the drought had cause food shortages. Many had died before she had arrived and many had died when she had been here. She had cried, but now she was getting used to calling for the mortician when someone passed away on her watch. It was sad, yes, but Florencia had to remain strong. She had other patients, mothers of children, children, pregnant woman, old woman, men, boys, the whole lot to look after.
The conditions in 11 left many with fevers and unkempt wounds which the nurse had to clean. Many children had rickets that weren't necessarily because of the food shortage- from what mothers had told her, they didn't have the money to buy fruits and such, to give their children the needed vitamins to prevent their legs from bowing. Many adults were also suffering from diseases such as scurvy and digesting problems which were only text book cases back in one. She missed her home, but she was needed her. She needed to help.
Luckily, for the citizens of District 11, a few weeks ago the heavens had opened and rain had poured down on the District. At first, Florenica was glad that the dry land was getting it's fresh supply of water but then she became concerned for the rain did not stop and there was some minor flooding. A few blocks from the health center a sewage pipe had over flown which the nurse knew could bring a bought of new diseases- Cholera being the main worry. The rain and the heat had also bought Mosquito's which lead to more worrying issues like malaria and other diseases carried by the creatures.
Today was not particularly busy. The whole center would be going home soon because they were no longer needed here; though Florencia would disagree. She saw that things were bad here, but she also knew that there was nothing she could do about it. Sighing, the girl turned away from the window she had been watching out of and to the entrance to the little cubical she was taking checkups in today.
"Next" She called out forcefully, picking up her clipboard to see who was next to see her on the list. There were only numbers, no names, people collected tickets at the beginning of the day and waited for their numbers to be called and by the looks of things, Florencia did not think she'd get to see everyone on her list. When the next person did not appear, she shouted louder "Next. Ticket number 8421!"
