[Day 1] Foil Round 1: Whitman vs. Gleam

FOIL ROUND 1: WHITMAN VS. GLEAM

Welcome to the Individual Foil tournament of the second Panem Olympic Games! The fencing strips are located within the Olympic Arena, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you stretch and warm up with your coaches before you're called to the starting block, and remember, make your district proud!

The three fencing events (Epee, Sabre, and Foil) are tournaments, which follow brackets. Each match will have its own thread, which will be posted by me. Feel free to roleplay your character fencing their opponent for each touch and then paste the code [*roll range="1-4"] without the asterisk into your post and roll, as you would with a Hunger Games die. This corresponds to the number of points your competitor scored in a row, and will be added to your total. All fencing bouts go to fifteen touches and follow turn order, as a regular fight using the combat system would.

The competitor who reaches fifteen points first wins the bout and moves on to the next round. As the bouts finish, the winners will be recorded here; when all the first round bouts have been completed, the bracket will be updated and the next round will start.

I am a Plastic. I am a Plastic. I am a Plastic. Despite the mantra in my head, I cannot shake the nerves that rumble through me. I sit quietly in my chair, shoulders back and chin raised defiantly, but the tension in my stomach makes me want to be sick. I am an elite of District Two, a Plastic, armed and dangerous, yet I have never been in the spotlight like this. It was always Oslo who was the center of attention, never myself. Never Brutus. It’s my turn to shine, however. I steel myself for the competition, standing quickly and grabbing my foil before taking my place on the platform. There is nothing that can stop me, not even my competitor- one Dionysus Gleam- who easily looks like he could break me in half. He looks enormous compared to me. I swipe my hair out of my face once more before settling my mask over my head and straightening myself out. Carefully, I settle myself into position, crouched and tensed, waiting for the start. I settle the mask on my head, trying to not betray any nerves as I come into the ring and face off in a stance against my opponent: she's much smaller, so I have the advantage of reach. I wonder what advantages this Antonella has, how fast she is, how perfected her forms. I rest easy on my feet in the fighting stance, and when the signal sounds, I attack with a textbook lunge.

I hardly flinch at the hit, though it does smart against my chest. But I am a Plastic. I must betray no fear. I take a deep breath, pacing back to the starting position to ready myself again. His form isn't bad, this Dionysus. I don't know what to make of him, or what to make of how this match will end. My body sinks into position and the beep sounds. The approach is slower this time. There's no need to rush the start in foil. The quickness will come after. Just as I'm in range, I thrust out my blade. o1|UnltH1-4

I take a hit and dance back and parry, before attempting another lunge; I am determined to win. Of course, all the determination in the world won't help if this girl is better than I am. I prefer the heavier sword, but I like to fence with a foil, too, and, I can feel my teeth clench behind my mask as I attempt another hit.

I'm not as strong as Oslo. I don't have her sheer will to win, or her deviousness, or her charisma. I don't have Cora's blind innocence. I don't have Tiger's rest her plastic little soul tenacity. I have my father's money and my mother's hair. I guess I'll just have to make do with the fire from my head to keep me burning long enough to get anywhere. It starts now. DqGIUcKL1-4

I feel myself snarl under the mask as I take a solid hit, and I come in fast and hard; I can feel myself getting pissed off and I know I shouldn't, but it's happening anyhow. The dark side of hating to lose. I dance away and then thrust forward, trying to keep control of myself and not flail desperately.

With careful steps, I return to the starting line. I already want this to be over. I've never been good with swords of any kind. I was good with bows and arrows, but Cora said they were her thing and that I couldn't use them anymore. kdFOMFc81-4

I get hit again, and I see red and lunge forward, and I stab the foil directly into the girl's chest. I give a little grunt of satsifaction and try to leap out of the way of her next thrust...

My chest is smarting something crazy. This is not a part of my body that is meant to be hit. Contrary to common belief, it hurts to be hit directly in the chest when you're a girl. For a moment, I curl an arm protectively over myself before settling back into stance to continue. The beep sounds and I skirt forward to strike again. cVU7cI141-4

With a final blow to his right shoulder, the final buzzer sounds. I blink in shock, turning to the moderator for the match. He stands, raising his right arm, indicating to my side of the platform. Really? Did I really just win my match against this giant? I blink stupidly, pulling my mask away from my face as I turn to face my competitor. "Uhm. Good match, I suppose," I say, smiling awkwardly as I extend a hand. He could still crush me right here and now. There's over a foot of difference between us, I see fully, now that we're so much closer and not moving around. There's no more frenzy, but a relieved buzz of contentment settling in my veins.
