[Day 2] Epee Round 1: Galvez vs. Johnwayne

EPEE ROUND 1: GALVEZ VS. JOHNWAYNE

Welcome to the Individual Epee tournament of the second Panem Olympic Games! The fencing strips are located within the Olympic Arena, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you stretch and warm up with your coaches before you're called to the starting block, and remember, make your district proud!

The three fencing events (Epee, Sabre, and Foil) are tournaments, which follow brackets. Each match will have its own thread, which will be posted by me. Feel free to roleplay your character fencing their opponent for each touch and then paste the code [*roll range="1-4"] without the asterisk into your post and roll, as you would with a Hunger Games die. This corresponds to the number of points your competitor scored in a row, and will be added to your total. All fencing bouts go to fifteen touches and follow turn order, as a regular fight using the combat system would.

The competitor who reaches fifteen points first wins the bout and moves on to the next round. As the bouts finish, the winners will be recorded here; when all the first round bouts have been completed, the bracket will be updated and the next round will start.

If his first event had been a disaster, the épée was sure to be the apocalypse. Mustang stared at the board and felt a cold snake wind around his spine. Elya Johnwayne?! Someone really had it out for him. And really, what was the point? He was going to lose the first round no matter who they pitted him against. No reason to pile on the embarrassment by matching him up with one of the most well known badasses in Panem.

Especially when she had a vendetta to work out.

He hoisted his helmet with a deep sigh. A camera winked out of his face, presumably to follow the more interesting of the two contestants. He dragged his épée behind until a judge snapped at him. Tang just shrugged, unapologetic but resigned as he stepped onto the strip. He lifted the weapon half-heartedly. He had a few welts from Darrion's bludgeoning the day before, and he'd only been allowed to hit specific targets. With the épée, all bets were off. Elya could hit him anywhere.

He split his stance, angling the most important bits of himself away. "Let's make this quick," he said, pointing the stiff blade just above her head. When it was time, he shook his head even as he engaged her.

They clashed. And he came away victorious. Tang huffed, his eyes huge behind the protection of his helmet. "Oh no."

It felt nice to have a blade in her hand again, after so long spent without. On the whole, however, the seventeen year old was feeling surlier and surlier every moment she spent in District Four — every moment spent in the stupid fucking olympics. Why she thought being so near to the spotlight was a good idea was, at this point absolutely beyond her, especially so soon after her brother had gone and played the monster on national television. It was almost as if she'd wanted the extra stares.

She hated it, every minute. Gawks she was used to, as any good cripple should be, but the murmurs were hard to adapt to. She'd spent years honing the hate inside her with every ounce, and at that moment, she hated them for it — hated each and every camera, each and every bystander for being so eager to watch Johnwayne compete and not Elya. She wanted to hate her brother for it, too — she faulted him for it, that was for damn sure — but when she conjured up the memory of his wicked grin as the blood poured down the side of his face, the feeling refused to come. The only she felt was cold.

They'd summoned her to the strip again — rather, they'd summoned Johnwayne and all the prying masses along with. She rolled her eye at a cameraman, before offering a salute and a scowl to her opponent and sliding the mask over her face. It was only then that she realized — shit — she'd grabbed an epee with a left-handed grip.

It was clear something was wrong. He glanced at the judges, who weren't even trying to hide their discomfort. What was happening? He lifted his weapon, unsteady on his feet. And as they waited for the next bout to start, he saw it. The way he wrist flared out just a millimeter too far. She had the wrong grip.

He came at her more slowly, testing the limits of her hold. He met each strike of her weapon, careful to keep himself balanced. But she was stronger - she was a Johnwayne after all - and he backed up along the strip. He had one foot over precariously, and though he was a coward, he wasn't about to go out that way. He had to try to force her back to center.

He lunged, and his other foot jutted back for balance, right over the line.

A red card flashed. A point had been award to Elya for his incompetence.

It took her four touches longer than it should have to adjust to how wrong the blade felt in her hand — but it wasn't as if she could switch over to use her left. In any situation, Elya would have fought with her non-dominant hand, and would've been just as comfortable doing it, but she didn't suspect it was legal to do — especially with a wire wound up her sword arm for the electronic sensor.

The chiral grip could not mess up the ever-adaptable Right-eye for long, however, and sure enough she began to land her blows on-target. And even with fucked weapon, she couldn't lose to someone incompetent enough to go off-strip. Right?
