[Day 3] Individual Rowing

INDIVIDUAL ROWING

Welcome to the Individual Rowing tournament of the very first Panem Olympic Games! The swimming pool is located within the aquatics center, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you stretch and warm up with your coaches before you're called to the pool for your race, and remember, make your district proud!

The execution of this event is simple. Feel free to roleplay your character during the row, and then paste the code [*roll=12000+36000] without the asterisks into your post and roll, as you would with a Hunger Games die. This will result in a four-digit number that will correspond to a time, which is read with a decimal point separating the first three and the last two digits (e.g. 36000 is read as 360.00 seconds) This time is in seconds, and I will convert it into minutes.

The race is 1500 meters long. The competitor with the lowest time wins this event. Times for this event will be continually updated on this thread.

After everyone has rolled, feel free to edit your post with your character's reaction if you so desire, but please keep it to one post rather than multiple.

There is NO POSTING ORDER; you may post whenever you please. Keep in mind that this event must be wrapped up by the end of the Olympics Day.

I have never rowed a day in my life and to be honest I never really planned to because what was the fuckig point? One of those assisiants guide me over to the row boat thing which had my name printed on the side. I rase an eyebrow at her as she tells me to sit and get ready. I sit, because it took o much more effort to stand then sit and sitting was quite the relaxing sport. But then a whistle sounds and everyone is making these weird game faces and I am actually grabbing the row boat things,-you know, the things that are meant to make me move? Yeah well I grab them and then there is this gun shot and everyone is moving and I sigh because I dont want to move, I dont want to physically exhaust my body- but then I also didnt want to look like a fuckin looser at the start line... So I row. I row row row my boat quite violently dow the fucking stream.

All I can think of at the moment is how amazing I preformed yesterday in the eight hundred meter medley. I did this for my parents because they are watching over me from somewhere, and my entire life has been devoted to make them proud, and I made them proud. I was the fastest of them all. I won, but it wasn't by much. I spent my life in the water swimming,a and surfing, and now it's time to row a boat. I've watched people row, and it's not that hard, but it looks fun. I walk over to the boat with my name on it. A large grin plasters itself across my face. It's an amazing feeling, and hopefully I perform well today. I grab the ores and prepare to row. Today this performance is for my parents again. All I do is for them. I relax myself forcing all thoughts out of my mind. Then the gun sounds, and I row as fast, and hard as I possibly can.

Bastille Styx was made to row, as demonstrated by his nights spent on the District Four canals. He was born with an oar in his chubby little hands, or so the story goes. There was no one with a technique as wonderful, as practiced as his own. Who else could ferry the dead out with as much ease?

When he placed himself in the boat, his only regret was that he could not use his own for this silly little contest. He was much more comfortable in his own apparatus. Still, a grim show of emotion twisted his lips in something similar to a grin as he prepared himself to row.

He looked towards the mortals on the shore, trying to spot Taggerty Eames in the watching crowd. He hoped that she was watching, that she would witness his triumph. He was sure to be triumphant, there was no other option.

As the bell rang shrill, he took off.

Respect The Water, For It Can Give Or Take

    Eva's time during these Olympics had been nothing less than extraordinary. She was truly having the time of her life while showing others with her disease that hope is out there for them. Most athletes would be upset with the way she finished in her last event, but Eva wasn't like other athletes. She didn't see it as a defeat, she saw it simply as a good race for her fellow Olympians. Eva had already won a bronze medal which in its own seemed like a distant dream. Yet now she wore it proudly around her neck wherever she went. Including all the interviews she had been going to, she had honestly lost track about them all. Apparently she was a huge story for all of Panem whenever they weren't talking about that one twelve year old from district two. She didn't know the boy, but she definitely had heard of him. He was the youngest athlete if she could recall correctly but she wasn't totally sure. Still he was impressive for his age, just as she was for someone with her disease.

    Today Eva's heart was hanging a little heavier than days past. She knew this was caused by the fact that today would be her final event in these Olympic Games. However, she planned to return for the next ones due to such an amazing experience she has had this time around. Today she would yet again be participating in a water sport, however, she wouldn't be swimming but instead rowing. Eva couldn't explain what drew her towards this event but all she knew is that she really enjoyed it. Now she would be able to see if she was any good at it in comparison to her opponents. As the horn rang out through the aquatics center she boarded her boat and prepared herself for the race.

    She remembered what she told herself before coming here, and while at the trials. She had to focus on her own technique she couldn't get caught up in her opponents or else she would rush too early. The only time she would allow her self to look would be the home stretch. So when the horn sounded and she began rowing she focused on her breathing and the way her rows glided through the water. Only when she was entering the home stretch did she look up and start sprinting. Even now she stayed in control though, she had seen many mess up by rushing too much and she didn't feel like joining that group. When she finally came to a panting stop she listened for the announcements with a smile on her face.

Does, Says, Thinks

It all reminded him of forever ago. The feel of the oars in his hands as he readied himself, the gentle rock of the water underneath his boat, it was so much the same and yet... It was hard to forget that the last time had happened so long ago. Too many things had changed for him to look at it the same way. He didn't have anyone cheering him on, maybe his district but no one was cheering him on personally. It was a disappointing thought and what he was most disappointed in was himself. He had let too many things go, had given in to too many changes and now he was paying the price. Even the thrill of competition was beginning to leave a bitter taste in his mouth instead of the sweet rush it normally brought. He was growing up, growing older, growing more distant.

If he was to salvage anything of this trip, squeeze any good from these chances and risks, then he would have to start believing in the joy they would bring him. It all felt empty though, pointless and hollow. He felt like he was doing things just to do them and not to seize the joy from them. He took a breath, steadying his thoughts as he waited for the gun. There it went, and he dipped his oars into the water in an attempt to drive himself forward, faster than anyone he was competing with.

He just had to imagine he was trying to get away from it all.

The feel of a smooth sanded oar was not foreign to Gideon. There had been plenty of times, before earning a fully rigged boat of his own, that he paddled out to earn his daily wages. This was different, this was just a competition. Yet the same nervousness took over his stomach now as it did when he noticed there was only ten minutes til dusk and he'd only two fish in his boat. He wouldn't starve tonight if he didn't win, but he wouldn't feel like he did his very best. The Avery boy could paddle fast but a quick glance at those around him made him start to doubt himself. A race is no place for negative thoughts and yet they still penetrated his mind.

Picture something at the finish line, he thought, eyes closed to the bright lights of the aquatic center. Picture... mom and dad.

Holding his oar up at chest level, he waited for the starting pistol. When it echoed through the building he launched forward ready to meet those who he wished waited for him at the end.

Of all fucking events, she'd been stuck in rowing. With all the fishfaced District Fours and barrel-chested District Ones, the wiry one-eye had been stuck in rowing. How the fuck was that even useful to anyone outside of District Four? She could count on one hand the number of tributes who'd needed to row anything in her own lifetime, and even then they'd had swimming as an alternative — provided they weren't afraid of frostbite or sharks, of course. Likely this had been some sort of push by District Four for more medals, in some feeble attempt to maintain their status as the Capitol's darling for that much longer.

Well, fuck if she wasn't going to try to strip them of that while she was here. The rowing itself wasn't so bad. It wore on the shoulders and bit at the hands, but even with the current and the wind opposing her, Elya did not find it particularly difficult. It was the mental drain that ate at her. The ocean beyond just kept going and going forever, with nothing and no one for...

A knowing grin took over her face in place of the thin line of determination. It didn't matter how she did in the event she'd been signed up for entirely by mistake — didn't matter if they'd give her a medal at all — she'd just been struck with an idea that was pure gold.
