[Day 4] Decathlon: Shot Put

DECATHLON: SHOT PUT

Welcome to the Decathlon tournament of the second Panem Olympic Games! The track and field complex is located within the Olympic Arena, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you stretch and warm up with your coaches before you're called to the starting block, and remember, make your district proud!

The execution of this event is simple. Feel free to roleplay your character setting up for their throws, and then paste the code [*roll=375+1650] without the asterisks into your post THREE TIMES and roll, as you would with a Hunger Games die. This will result in a four-digit number that will correspond to a distance, which is read with a decimal point separating the first two and the last two digits (e.g. 1905 is read as 19.05 meters) Each participant will be measured by their best throw only, not their average distance or the sum of their throws.

The competitor with the furthest distance wins this event. Distances for this event will be continually updated on this thread; however, the overall decathlon standings will be updated on a separate thread.

After you have rolled, feel free to edit your post with your character's reaction to each throw if you so desire, but please keep it to one post rather than multiple.

There is NO POSTING ORDER; you may post your throws whenever you please. Keep in mind that this event must be wrapped up by the end of the Olympics Day.

She could not bear being second to the Lyon bitch. Not only was she an annoyance, a bug on her windshield but she was damn good. That was the kicker. Amazonite could have happily survived the girl's sharp tongue without a second thought if it were not for the simple fact that Circe Lyon was beating her. How dare she. To be beat by a girl from Two was as terrible as being beat by a girl from The Seam out in Twelve. She could not return home, head held high while knowing that she got silver to her.

When she picked up the shotputs, she pretended that she was throwing Circe Lyon's stupid beautiful face out into a swamp, where her lovely lips couldn't bother anyone anymore. As she heaved the first ball it even managed to make her feel a tiny bit better, despite how silly and childish the game of imagination was. She didn't know why she was letting Circe get to her so well.

Imagining her drowning in a swamp though was extremely good therapy. She considered imagining Nero Grimm's head as the next shot put. Watching it fly even further was extremely soothing. She raised her hand to shade her eyes from the sun, watching where it landed, silently swearing to herself that she'd get it even further on her last throw. There was no room for error.

She glanced slyly to her side and saw Circe Lyon there, hefting her own ball up. Eyes narrowing, she decided to imagine that the last ball was not her head this time, but the spot way out in the distance was. She'd knock that pretty little head into next week easy.

There really didn't seem to be a way this would improve. I was at the stinking bottom of it all and I guess it is about time I come to the conclusion that I am nothing but a failure. A failure with no name worth anyone's time - and I suppose maybe I deserve this, being stuck outside of the spotlight. My brother and sister now share it, one in spirit and one still taunting me, speechless.

That's what you get I suppose. That's what you get when you try just a little to hard to make a name for yourself.

But I'm too long gone to change who I am, so I let the rage pulse through my veins and as a sheet of red blurs my vision, I throw with as much as I can manage.

Though I doubt I will ever be better than anyone here.

It seems I must continue to toss things as far away from myself as I can, because apparently someone thought that this was sport enough for not once, or twice, but thrice the entertainment. Sour loathing is all I hold for this repetition and I wish only that I might reach the conclusion in a timely manner. It has been more than a respectable amount of time and I ask only that it refrain from elongating this trial of my patience. I suppose it was past that point some time ago but I soldier on to endure the overblown grandeur of this silly organized ball toss. To hell with their foolish notions. I would rather this all subsided in the face of my triumph.

Honestly, is that so hard to understand.

CIRCE LYON

Circe had spent the lunch hour mulling over how to tangle Amazonite up in a little accident. There had been so many delicious possibilities. A pinch rug between her room and the baths, just enough to twist her ankle. A freak spider bite just above her eye, temporarily stealing her vision. A little laxative in her oatmeal. All workable, except Circe couldn't execute any of the plans herself. After so many days in first, it would be too painfully obvious. A score to be settled.

And that was the thing about isolating herself. There was no one left to do her dirty work.

It was a knife in her belly, a stitch in her side, all the way out to the shot put field. She could barely breathe for the ache of grief, the reminder that she was doomed to forever be one half of a whole. She did not search for the elusive Elya. She did not titter or stare after Amazonite. She waited her turn in a fog, hefting the shot puts one after the other.

And instead of staying to watch her score flash, to see herself be ranked, Circe fled the field for the relative safety of the locker room.

Challenging Me Is A Big Mistake

    When the scores were finally updated for the Decathlon Xander was throughly surprised by his standings. He figured after day 2 he would still be digging himself out of the hole he made. Indeed he was still in fifth, but that was far better than being in dead last. Also he wasn't that many points away from third which means that today he would have to be amazing. Amazonite had been living up to his Shore name but now it was time for a Chastmen to rise. If Xander could manage to win at least one event today and get second in the other he was right back into this event. Yet he also knew if he failed he was right back out. Today would certainly be the turning point of this event, and Xander planned to take it by storm. He wouldn't let his rumors of being small and weak define him ever again, he would win and claim glory for himself and his family. Today would mark the beginning of a new Era of well known career families, today the Chastmen family takes the throne.

    With his face set hard as throne Xander entered the stadium, which he was determined to have screaming his name by the time the day had ended. As the sunlight bathed him in its raidiant blanket he watched his fellow opponents go one by one. The Shot Put was an event unfamiliar to Xander, but he wouldn't let that stop him. If he, a well trained career, hadn't trained for this no one had. He would have to Capitalize on that in order to rise in the rankings. When the annoucer called his name he strode up to the marked throwing area showing his strength and power off to the entire arena with every step he took. It was time for small frail Alexander to fall and for strong, powerful, and deadly Xander to rise and thrive. As his heart beat settled and his eyes locked on his goal he let it fly.

And yet that's okay. She's having fun amidst the less-than-great attempts at sports she's never heard of and ignoring the bickering between that District One girl and the Lyon. It's not shame, or pressure, or nerves weighing her down to the ground - it's her running medal that hands around her neck that tells her it's okay to lose. Instead of snarling at the others, she smiles. Instead of cowering away from the audience, she waves. She came and conquered her talents and ran away from the pressures of home. (That doesn't mean to say she doesn't swear she spies her mother in the crowds.)

Despite my previous success with the discus, I am wary to be confident with the shot put. They are not the same event, as many people like to believe. As I watch the other competitors step up and throw, I break out into a cool sweat, nerves making their way into my gut. I take a deep breathe, as the weighted balls fly through the air before landing with a solid thunk in the grass.

Its clear now that the Decathlon is getting to be very intense, and I am still in the back of the pack. It would take a miracle at this point for me to some how be launched into medal position.

So thats what I hope for, as the metal ball lays in my hand.

I need a miracle.

I feel drunk off of my good event from before. Actually, I may be a little bit drunk. I haven't really stopped drinking today... does the world seem extra bright to you? They're handing me a heavy ball... I think I'm supposed to throw it, maybe? I don't know. I'm in last place anyway, what does it matter? They're all laughing at me now...

The mile had been a fucking disaster. Her bad leg had given her grief the whole way, and while she could always fight through the knives and spurs digging deep into her bone, fighting anything made the mile that much worse. She came in a hair shy of six minutes, which was awful and unacceptable both, but there was nothing to be done about it at this point.

What she needed to focus on was hefting the large metal shots into the realm of the top contenders if she hoped to retain third place — Amazonite Shore had made it clear that she intended to usurp first from Circe Lyon on that day, and after her miserable mile there was no hope of advancing a place — but so long as she could hold third, Elya would force herself to be content.
