"Oh come on Jars. Life's too short to go that slow," I called down
to my younger brother. I was halfway up the ladder leading to the
top of the storage container and he had only just stepped foot on
the bottom rung. "What do you even think you'll find Mel?" he asked
while panting. I stopped climbing the ladder momentarily to shrug at
him. "I dunno, something interesting." Finally, reaching the top, I
looked around to find an entrance into the container itself. There is a
trapdoor in the middle of the container roof but leaning down to open
it I found it was latched but not secure. Seeing Jarlaith nearly at the
top I told him to stay where he was. I grabbed the closest branch of
the nearby tree and climbed up before jumping down onto the trapdoor,
the force breaking the fragile latch and allowing me entrance.
I don't have long inside the container before I hear an owl hoot
above me. Only I knew it wasn't really an owl but my brother warning
me that peacekeepers were on the way. "Here come the tourists
then," I muttered as I pulled myself up out of the container and shut
the trapdoor just in time and made for the stairs I had climbed up before.
There were the peacekeepers coming down the street just as me and
Jarlaith had started to descend the stairs on the side of the container.
Spotting us a peacekeeper asked us what we thought we were doing
hanging around storage containers. I had really wanted to raise my
eyebrow and just walk on but I knew that probably wouldn't be the
best way to go about it. "My little brother got us lost looking for his
friend's house so we had to get up high so we could pinpoint it." The
lie was the first thing that came to my head and there was a look of
suspicion on the peacekeeper's face but he gestured towards the path
ahead. "I would suggest a tree or something next time kid," he
advised in a warning tone. Once we were both alone again I showed
my 7 year old brother the one thing I had managed to find, a book
that looked ancient. "Wow. It's a dusty old book," he exclaimed with
sarcasm. I rolled my eyes at him. "Yeah but how old Jars. It could be
from before the games, maybe even before Panem. It could tell us
so much about what it was like back then when they lived happily."
The ten year old me disappeared from the world as my eyes opened
and I started to slowly sit up, looking around the room I shared with
my brother. It took a few minutes for me to wake up properly and
then it hit me. Today was the day. Everyone else in my family knew
it as well as I did. This was the day I was going to leave home. We
had all talked about it in secret for a long time. I knew my parents
wouldn't have permitted it before I turned 18 so I deliberately made
it so I went away 2 months after my 18th birthday. Going down the
stairs for breakfast felt different than ever before. I knew it wasn't
going to be the last time since I promised my family I would visit at
times so they knew I was doing well. My father was already in the
kitchen making some kind of broth for us to eat. Some people would
say it was a weird thing to have at that time of day but others in
District 12 would understand. You make do with what you have. My
brother walked in just as the soup was being poured into bowls. We
ate in silence, none of us wanting to ruin the precious moments left.
After eating I went into the bedroom to get out of my nightgown.
The outfit I was going to wear was already laid out for me. It had
been a present from my father that he had scrimped and saved
his own hard earned money to get for me. It was a black tank
top made of a comfortable material that was unlike the clothes we
usually have to buy. This was accompanied with a pair of dark brown
jeans and black trainers. Once I was dressed I pulled my thick, black
hair into a ponytail that probably looked rather messy but that idea
didn't really bother me. As the hairbrush touched on my palm a little
I wished I hadn't already packed my gloves. The rash I get on my hands
every now and then had started to return again. On the small table
I used to store my valuables I picked up one item. It was a
necklace with some sort of old symbol on it as a charm. It was one my
father had given me as a young child and I never planned on letting it go as it
was something that never failed to bring happy memories to my mind.
It was then that my brother came into the room watching as I clutched
the charm in my palm. I quickly put the necklace on and reached into
my drawer in the dresser, now half empty and pulled something out of
it. I turned to my brother and gave him a weak smile. "I wanted to
give you this before I went," I say to focus his attention on me. My
right hand pulled out from behind my back and extended to him to
reveal something I knew he would easily remember. "The book from
back when we were little? Your first find?" I nod to confirm it. With a
small glint of a tear in my eyes I tell him that it is his book now and
he should keep it safe. "What was I back then? Like 5?" he asked with
a smile. "7," I corrected with a small giggle. We look in each other's
eyes and there is a brief silence between us. "You better keep safe
while i'm not around. I don't wanna hear the neighborhood unfriendly
peacekeepers have been knocking." At this my brother raises an
eyebrow. I suppose I was really the wrong person to give that advice
since I never really gave the law a second thought. "I'm gonna miss
you Mel," the 15 year old admits and we hug like never before.
I say my final goodbyes in the small kitchen area of the house. The
bag with my essentials in rested firmly on my back as I hugged my father
and my brother, both of whom were slightly reluctant to let go. There
was silence until the older male spoke. "You be careful now my little
adventurer." I widened my eyes a little before responding to him.
"I'm always careful." There was more tense chatter before the time
came and I left my family home, heading for a gap in the fence
I knew would lead me to my new destination. It took me slightly longer
than usual to get there but I put that to the side. Reaching the fence
I came to a halt and held my breath. I wiped a single tear from my
cheek and quickly pulled myself through the gap before I could be seen.
Just like that I left my old life behind that day and started a new one.
It has been a few month now since I left and it has been the best
time in my life. I loved my family and I loved home but for so many
years I had been confined to such a small area to explore and it
drove me mad to know there was probably so much more than
even I could imagine. There was only so much that could be found
within the factories, containers and various other buildings around
District 12. I was born to find adventure and although it meant
leaving my old life behind I know I have done the right thing. In
the other districts there are treasures and rare things I have
found that are starting to give me such a great idea of what life
used to be like all that time ago when even Panem didn't exist. I
sometimes return to my home district and see my family, letting
them know of my findings and adventures and giving some of
the smaller things I have found to them as gifts.
