"What happened?"
He didn't want to talk about it. He never did. He never would. He was always emotional thinking about it. It was something Lotus always hide. Even from his brother. Their past was gruesome with murder and death. It was hard not letting him know. but he was fourteen now.
"It's hard to tell you."
"Why?"
He looked at his brother. They had the same eyes. Those of their mother. She was beautiful. Everyone says Lotus has her features. Her light brown hair with large curls emulates his. He was tall just like she was, towering over most.
"It just is. OK. I'm glad you weren't old enough to remember."
Lotus looked down to the boots he had on. There was wood chips resting in the seams. These were the boots he worked in, making lumber. He normally wear his work clothes all the time. A loose fitting shirt, tight pants, combat boots. This was it. HE didn't have much clothing, trying to provide for his brother.
"But Lotus. I'm fourteen now. I want to know."
"Are you ready. Because I don't think you are."
Lotus always protected his brother. He was his life at this point. They had no one, no last name, no help. They were what people referred to as Street Kids. And being a Street Kid was hard. One thing any street kid could tell you, "You need a thick skin to last". Which Lotus had.
He was always the one to calm the storm, making things seem better for those around him. He was one of the leaders, so to say, of the Kids. He showed them to keep going even after you hit rock bottom. Because there is only one way to go. And that is up. And up was the way he wanted to go. He was always staying positive for his brother, as well as himself.
But being positive was always hard seeing he has never had that personality. He was raise where you needed to be rough and ridged. But for the sake of his brother he needed to be kind, and honest, and loving. He wanted more for his brother and he pushed his brother. But was never enough.
Being Strong emotionally was always a struggle as well. Going throw what he had, could literally drive someone crazy. Which he felt was going to happen, seeing how his father had gone crazy. But His brother keeps his feet on the ground.
"Lotus, I am Ready! I'm fourteen now."
"Fourteen don't mean a thing."
The truth was, Lotus wasn't ready to face what he has keep from the world. The imagery, the horror. That Night. It all haunted him. He ran from it for so long. He never wanted to face it. But he had his brother. And to be honest his brother was old enough to understand.
"It all started the night I woke you up. Do you Remember that?"
But lotus had to face his past and what he saw, and had been through. If not for himself, then for his brother.
The truth was simple. His father went crazy. See simple. But there is always more to a story.
Lotus woke up one night. He heard screaming, blood curling screaming. He was only eight at the time, and was scared. He had no idea what had been going on. He was quick to wake his brother a tell him to get out of the house and run from the screams in to the woods and meet at the river side. Which he did.
But lotus wanted to get to his parents and sister to let them know something was wrong. As he moved toward his parents room, he saw his father throw the crack. He was holding an axe, standing over his sisters' lifeless body. He peered throw the crack more to see his mother against the wall. Still screaming. It was a horrible site, and there was nothing he could do. If he went in. His life like his sisters' would be no more.
He watched as his father walked back and forth yelling. Then he did it. He took her just like he did his sister. He swung the axe, blood spattered against the wall, no more screaming.
Just as Lotus turned to run his father caught sight of him. There wasn't much he could do but run. And he did. But he fell and a knife was sticking out of his leg. That man he called Dad had thrown a knife and got him.
There wasn't much after that really. All he could remember beyond that point was a haze. There were peace keepers. His father was shot dead.
"So that's how you got that scare on your calf?"
"Yep."
That night has affected everything up to this point. That night caused his brother and him to have an even harder life than the one they would have. Having to steal food, and other items to make it by. Living on the streets with people he couldn't trust.
One year. Thats all he needed. One year, he could apply for a house, he could provide a shelter. That was all he needed at this point. A place of safety.
