If you were to look at her you’d see the perfect image of a District 2 girl. But looks can be deceiving. From a distance she's pretty as a picture; long blonde hair and blue eyes. Looking closer you'll see that her hair has tinges of aqua blue in it. Aqua blue to match her eyes which are as unnatural as the dainty painted nails which hide her short, stubby nails. You see, along with her hair and her nails, her eyes are a creation of someone else. That someone else being her father. But long hair and bright eyes can't hide everything. Take a closer look. A pale but always there scar scrapes its way over her nose onto her cheek. Claw marks. But it wasn't claws of a dog or cat. Those claws belonged to something much more sinister.
Slender. Tall. Beautiful. These words and many more are the ones of which were drilled into her over and over and over and over. You must be slender. You must be tall. You must be beautiful. Because no one wants to sponsor a short, scrawny girl who looks like she couldn’t kill a fly let alone a human. That's the aim. Look the part to get the sponsors. So from afar she really does look the part. This skinny, beautiful girl who stands at five foot eight looks perfect. But those who do step forward, those who do look beyond the painstakingly applied makeup see the flaws. They see the scars, they see the absolutely miniscule amount of brown peeking out from the blue in her irises because beauty can't hide everything.
Personality:
She was almost called Aphrodite. Almost. But as her dad always says; wisdom and war are more important than love. So she was named Athena. The name fits. She is wise. But like a dress, after a few wears it can start to be ill-fitting. You wouldn't expect Athena, the great goddess, to be scared of anything. Would you? But this Athena is scared. In fact, she is terrified. Very, very terrified.
Water, muttations and The Games. Those are Athena's three raging, undying and intense fears. Every day her nightmares contain at least one of these three terrors. Being pulled under a powerful current as she tries to escape from the river. Being surrounded by mutts that either want to tear her apart or make her their lunch. Being in the arena with the faces of the children that will kill her or the faces of the children that she'll kill.
She could be a Greek Goddess. She is smart enough and strategic enough. She could lead people into battle with the knowledge that they would win. The thing is, she wouldn't be able to lead herself to battle with the knowledge that she'd win. She has the techniques, the skills, the everything to win. So you'd think. So her father would hope. But she doesn't have the bravery. She's no Athena. She couldn't win the war that is the Hunger Games.
History:
Ever since she was a little girl she had a journey that she was supposed to go on. Her path was laid out for her. Her father had planned every step of the way with her mother occasionally nodding in agreement. She would train up, be a tribute in the Hunger Games and win. Win and bring honour to her family along with money to add to the overflowing metaphorical stack of coins that is the Alexandrite fortune. That was it. Either enter the Hunger Games and be a victor or be a complete and total disappointment to your family.
Training started when she started stringing logical thoughts together and when she could put one foot in front of the other. She was taught to throw a knife at a target with consistency and accuracy. She was taught to bandage and treat what could be a lethal wound. She was taught to kick someone so hard and just in the right place that they were dead in less than a minute. She learnt a lot of things like that. How to kill someone. How to knock someone out. How to stop herself bleeding to death. Offense and defense. But she wasn't just taught how to protect herself against other humans. There was an attempt to teach her to defend herself against mutts. That attempt went very, very wrong.
She was 7. Her father had used his riches and powerful status to arrange a visit from one of the Capitol's favourite yet dangerous zoo creatures. In an early Hunger Games – the year of which Athena could not remember – there was a very special muttation. The animal was like a kitten. Cute but ready to pounce. No one knows exactly what it looks like because it changes for each person. It takes the shape of the animal you think would be least likely to hurt you. So even with all the training to be ready to attack and be on your guard, when a sweet looking kitten came up to little Athena she reached out her hand to touch its ever so soft fur. Then it changed. It changed into a monstrous looking creature with sharp claws, razor like teeth and a bloodthirsty attitude. With one swipe of the creature's huge paw there was blood and gore everywhere. Even after being rushed to the District hospital and years of plastic surgery, the scar never disappeared. Neither did the memory.
Her mother and father spent all the 16 years of Athena's life making her into the perfect victor. They made her striking enough to stay in the mind of anyone that met her. Just like how she would stay in the mind's of potential sponsors. Her artificial blue eyes were just the beginning. Then came the blue hues that were put in her hair. Then the nails. Her wardrobe was a mix of floaty dresses and training gear. She either had to look like a fighter or a dainty, fragile fairy. There was no in between.
