We watched the fires every night, our backs towards the ocean. Living between two worlds of elements, we felt unstoppable.
Bang, an echo through the night. Crash, the fallen. We watch, you watch, I watch, white turn to red as blue turns to black or amber runs dry or nothing, nothing turns to rainbows before returning to despair once more.
A roar, incineration by the water’s edge.
Saline traces the linings of my nostrils. They breathe it every day, scattered beneath ripples of unfathomable beauty.
In, out, the waves will come. In, out.
I swallow it done with the fire from the bottle, numbness seeping through wrought iron bones.
I watch tendons burn.
Flames, flicker; light, to break up the dark, yet not even the tides of a thousand oceans won't shake the irrevocability of suffocating loneliness. I do that to myself, they say, with their moving eyes and thin-lipped silences as my own frozen fingers reach for a new form of self-destruction.
When they find the comfort of crisp linen, saline traces what remains of yesterday’s tear-stained crevices. Drowning, once more.
Why, why, why do I come back.
She will not speak today. Perhaps tomorrow. Perhaps next week. Perhaps next Winter.
But I’ve never been an optimist.
A shutting door, two thin fingers raised to chapped lips before finding the forehead of a girl so pale she makes the moon look sad. A gesture too gentle.
Shatter, a heart.
Shatter, another glass.
Shatter, shatter, shatter, sounds I don’t hear over the roar of water through the kitchen window.
