"I didn't care - I'd finally f o u g h t b a c k."
We were training, or attempting. I didn't exactly know where Lexi was, but I was punching a sack of stuffing while a guy lazed in the corner, not paying attention to me. Typical. I didn't quite know if this was because I was good enough that he felt he could leave me to it, or whether he thought I wasn't worth the effort. As much as I would have loved the first to be true, I had the gut feeling that it was actually the second. Damn the guy, maybe I should punch him instead - it would make him pay attention to me for sure.
I had developed almost a rhythm and so I broke it, taking a side swipe when I had gone for the uppercut last time. There was a stir of movement from the corner but if he thought he could ignore me then I could ignore him. I heard footsteps, coming from over my shoulder, but once again I ignored anyone else who might be near. The bag was swinging from my blows, even if it was just barely, and I was getting a little bored of punching something that didn't look even remotely human. There were some dummies off to the side and I gave the bag one last punch to send it rocking before moving over to them. I could have sworn the guy in the corner had perked up a bit as I did so.
This was more what I had been thinking of when they said practice targets, but when I had seen the punching bad a spear of uncertainty had jabbed me and so I had given in to it. The bag continued to rock slightly, the movement growing fainter by the second. I wasn't all that strong, that was plain, but if I could punch someone where it counted then it would still do me well enough. The poor sucker who was going to get a fist in his face stood in front of me silently. Fear me. It wasn't a request, it was a demand, but I wasn't expecting anything to happen. Nothing did. Typical.
I swung at the thing as it grinned at me, mocking me. My fist connected on the side of its jaw and while I didn't hear a crack I could tell that it wasn't sitting quite right. I struck out and hit the thing square in the teeth, sending it leaning backwards until I was sure it was going to fall. The guy in the corner glanced at me, half considering me. I turned to stare him down, narrowing my eyes and trying to set myself in a stance to imply a dare.
Then I got hit in the face.
I whirled to look at what it was, tasting blood in my mouth, and felt the bottom of my stomach drop out like it always does when you're embarrassed. I had been smacked in the face by the dummy I had thought I had just knocked over. Not only that, but there was a small spot of blood right on its lips. Fuck. That was gonna look weird. It had been a head bash, but the thing had practically kissed me. I brought a hand to my lip and scowled at the blood on my fingers.
Great.
