Name: Eryn Sconosciuto
Age: Seventeen
District: Seven
Gender: Female
Height: 5’5
Sister: Edyn
Parents: Unknown Wanderers
Appearance:
“Edyn?” Someone questions from behind while everyone walks home like the group of fosters that we are. Last time I swore a punch to the next person that mistakes me for my older sister, but my fists remain clenched to my side oddly enough. There’s no doubting the fact that there’s a resemblance between us; and with her strolling a few yards ahead, I’d rather not gesture to that being an insult. She is the respected leader after all, one that I admittedly look up to and take after. Just occasionally frustrating to be seen as nothing more then her mini-me.
My face contorts slightly with anger before I blow it off with a heavy sigh. “Wrong.” I mutter like he should of known better. “She’s ‘bout nay bit taller.” Fingers travel an inch or two above my head to illustrate the difference. “Looks a bit older, and right up there.” Nothing but annoyance intertwines with my voice as a point to where she is.
Sure we contain identical dark locks, and bright green eyes, but there are plenty of things separating our looks; like the way my lips always holds a pink tint, where she has the more appealing dark red color. I remember smudging mine with dirt when I was younger, because I hated the way the boys would tease me for appearing girly. Then she’d scold me for caring about what other’s thought.
“Be nice Eryn, he’s one of us now.” Speaking of the way she orders me around more then anyone else. And to think I’m supposed to be second to her. We certainly don’t act the same, even if she did raise me.
Personality:
Trust was the first think taught to me, and it was to not have any. Only believe in what my sister tells me, simple as that. Yet every time a new member joins our foster home, she’s welcoming them in with open arms. Always showing them the ways as if they were I. But I’m to never forget my special place as her baby sister, whether or not she actually shows it. Let’s just say I’ve taught myself to stand all on my own.
“Don’t mistake us again.” I warn the boy as he darts over to Edyn like a baby rabbit seeking protection. ‘Course she shoots me back a threatening glare of her own, demanding me to behave with nothing more. Gotta love being me. Least I can scare anyone aside from her.
Together we all journey down the path in a large bunch, as done every day, to and from school. The trees begin to grow thicker with every mile, traveling further into the untouched territories of district seven. How I love it here. The air becomes clearer, and bustling noises slowly fade away. Only our family roams around these parts, the abandoned misfit children that don’t belong anywhere else. There’s no denying I’ve learned to care for the majority of them.
“Edyn! Oh wait, sorry. You’re the weaker version.” Just not to fond of all of them. Before he even realizes it, I’m slamming his back into the side of the house and placing my handcrafted knife against his neck. Act now think later.
“Eryn…stand down.” There goes that damn voice again, telling me what to do. Either way I comply and loosen my grip on him, just not entirely. “Next time you want to disrespect my 2nd, I’ll let her show you just how strong she really is.” She promises to the one I have pinned. Kid’s been here for a little over a year and he’s already thinking he runs the place. Not with Edyn around that is. “Come Eryn.” Nope, she’s in charge of everyone that lives here, and I couldn’t love her & it more.
History:
Since I could remember it’s always been Edyn watching after me. Was told we joined the foster home when I was three and she was five; but all I can recall is this lifestyle, a large old house with a load of children that will never get adopted. She says our parents were both powerful leaders that had to escape. Guess that explains our qualities. Father was strong and clever, while Mother was comforting and persuasive. She acts as though she knew them for longer then five years, yet can never explain why they had left us behind. “So that we guide our younger generation like they did with theirs.” Was created a couple years back by her. But I know it’s only her determination to have an answer for everything.
“Where are we going?” I question out of concern. Usually she’s giving advice or we’re retelling stories of the past. Silence never means anything good. Either it’s something serious, or a serious lecture, none of which is to be looked forward to.
Her hand flies up to tell me to shush, and instantly I’m silent. She crouches, and I crouch; which often causes a domino effect if more of us were present. Currently it’s her and I on a mission, and a petite grin instinctively forms across my cheeks. She curls her fingers to dash into some bushes, and seconds later we’re both in cover without disturbing one dry leaf or breakable twig. It’s these memories that I retain, learning from her.
“Our people have been spotting them for weeks now.” She softly explains as my focus fall on the group of three sneaking past the fence. For years she’s been in search of our parents, with obviously no luck.
Personally I have no interest in finding the ones that left us. And it’s so far fetched to even think these Wanderers have anything to do with them. “Edyn. Do you really need me to tell you how ridiculous that sounds?” I chuckle in my whispered tone. To no surprise her eyes snap back at me with disapproval. She hates when people question her, guess we are alike in some way. “Even if these folks know our parents, do you really want to risk our people to find out?” Luckily I’m a rare few that she’ll actually listen to. She sighs just as I did earlier.
“You’re right.” Well that might be the first time I’ve heard those words from her. “Can’t leave those kids without at least one of us in command.” She jokes as if those kids weren’t the same age as us. Couldn’t quite explain how we gained control of the house. Just one of those things that’s always been, perhaps we do take after two leaders.
“What was that first part again, I didn’t catch it.” I laugh, even after she pushes me out of hiding. The Wanderers are long gone, but I act as if they’re not and run off with my giggles. She chases after me and it feels like when we younger, exploring these woods for the first time. Be free little girls, before the bad finally catches up.
Keep it together. Everything’s fine. You can handle this, just like Edyn taught. But it feels as though my heart’s going to rip out of my chest all on it’s own. How could she possibly go missing? And right after the large outbreak in the square. Was she involved? Wouldn’t be a shocker if she were, being so determined to know more about our parents. Just wan to think otherwise though, I’m not ready to take her place.
“Find her!” I scream at the many in the house that have gathered to me to look towards and follow. There’s no way I can do this. Maybe I could run it as she did, but not without her to turn to myself. My hands shake with frustration.
“Last reports say she went beyond the fence.” The one Edyn could ever trust shares. I have to assume my sister’s right in her judgment, only currently I can’t consider anything but anger.
“And why the hell didn’t anyone follow her!” My volume doesn’t lower a bit.
“Someone did!” She growls at me and yanks me aside like she’s forgotten about the ranks in this household. “Need I remind you that you have to be your sister now. No more Edyn’s baby sis.” ‘Course that’s the way she has to put it. Not that I’m the leader now and need to act like one. No, I have to be the next Edyn.
“Listen up. Nothing’s going to be changing here. I’ll just be in charge now.” I announce to everyone with the confidence that Edyn taught me to have. For my entire life I’ve been trained in her footsteps, no reason why I can’t manage this home just as well. Everything will remain exactly the same. Then there’s a knock at the door. “Answer it.” I order and take my seat at the head of the room.
A group of six walks in along with luggage to stay. Never before have we received this many kids at once, and even the foster parents of the home follow in. “These are our new members of this household. Their parents were either executed, captured, or have gone missing after yesterday’s outbreak. I’m sure you all will welcome them in just as you do with everyone.” Ms. Helena, our foster mom, orders sternly before her & Mr. Johnathon exit.
My lips are tight as I eye them closely. Upper class kids, there’s another first. “Greetings.” I address strongly, tapping on my armrest as I keep my stare intent. “Please, don’t get comfortable.”
