Name:
Jay Echart
Age:
15
Gender:
Male
District/Area:
District 1
Appearance:
Despite being the tallest in his family, Jay had always hoped he'd grow taller than his current height of 5'10. His stature seems like a fluke, really, considering neither his mother or father broke 5'8, and his older sister topped out at 5'7. At only 15 years old, though, he still hopes one day he'll hit one last growth spurt and at least come close to six foot. After all, who would ever take a 5'10 career seriously? It's not like he's super buff; sheer strength has never been his forte. And it's not like he's very intimidating to look at. An oval face with a rounded jawline does not a fearsome portrait paint. He can only hope to grow more intimidating with time.
His skin is porcelain white, which makes his dark brown-almost black eyes stand out on his face. He has a charmingly disarming smile, with a set of dimples to match, and his eyebrows are messy and a bit thick. His hair is a dark brown, and usually falls past his ears, with one side a tad longer than the other. Though recently, he's been keeping it cut relatively shorter, since getting hair in your eyes only hinders you whilst training. He's got sideburns that he refuses to shave, no matter how much money his mother tries to use to bribe him. Jay's hands are large and rather spindly, the type of hands one might describe as spider-like.
While Jay is pretty lean, don't let that fool you too much. He's not one for upper-body strength, but he's fast like a whippet, and it would be hard to find someone who could outrun him, sprinting or long-distance. He's also an adept climber, preferring to train on a climbing wall as opposed to on the ground, and has a pretty strong back and core as a result. His hand to hand is good, though careless, and he's got numerous small scars across his body from failed knife practices. His hands, in particular, are nicked up pretty badly, and he's got a particularly nasty scar running from the back of his left ear to just under his chin, running along the underside of his jawbone.
Personality:
Jay is quite the sweetheart. His sister may have been smaller and meeker-looking, but out of the two of them, Jay is definitely more kind-hearted and gentle. He's fairly polite, and almost always has something at least genial to say to whomever he might be talking to. While training, he's rather reserved, and likes to practice on his own, as opposed to with a partner or in a group. Likewise, he'd rather run alone than have anyone accompany him. He likes to use those times to clear his head, and get rid of any anxieties or stress he may be harboring.
Jay isn't exactly a social butterfly. While kind and friendly, he'd much rather spend time with his family or maybe one or two close friends over going to a party or hanging out in a large group. Unfortunately, his polite nature and general good attitude tend to get him roped into social outings he's rather not attend. And Jay doesn't really know how to say no. Jay only considers himself to have two or three friends, but many others around him would consider him a good friend, and he's more often times than not assaulted with a sense of social-overload. At times like these, he's likely to disappear of the social map for a few days, electing to spend time either working or concentrating on his studies. Or, simply picking a direction to run in, and just going.
Jay is as dedicated to his training as any of the other careers in his district, but he wouldn't consider himself to be as ruthless as many of the other kids his age. He treats his training as more of a fun stress-relief exercise, as opposed to some who take it much more seriously. Jay would like to compete in the Hunger Games, but doesn't consider it his top priority, and as a result, can sometimes be careless with his training. He's pulled more muscles than he knew he had, and broke his shin bone falling from the climbing wall when he was 12. He's getting much better at hand to hand and martial arts, though careless mistakes keep him from reaching his full potential. And to Jay, that's perfectly fine. He's much too gentle to become a cold-blooded killer, anyway.
Despite his kind nature, Jay can come off as a bit of a spoiled brat occasionally. He doesn't mean to, and if someone were to point it out, he'd be mortified, but he does tend to feel entitled to certain things. He has almost no concept of life outside of his District or the Capitol, and has little respect for the work and products other Districts create. This is less to do with Jay's personality and more to do with how District 1 children are educated, but the fact still stands.
History:
Born to Blanche and Lee Echart, Jay came into the world quietly. The second child, he was always more well-mannered than his sister, who was not nearly as quiet or polite. Despite the drastic differences in their personalities, Jay and his sister Kim got along pretty well, and throughout his childhood, she acted as a friend and mentor to him. Being 7 years his senior, he got to grow up watching her train for the Hunger Games, in awe of her power as she transformed from his bratty sister to a powerful killing machine. She was not reaped, however, and as soon as Jay was old enough, she began to train him as well, in hopes that he would one day be reaped instead.
He started formal training at 10, as many other District 1 children did, but he'd spent much of his childhood previously in his own workouts. He was an accomplished runner already, and his training only increased his stamina and endurance. By age 12, he was able to outrun kids 5 years older than him, and by 14, was scaling the climbing wall with ease. His studies didn't suffer when he began training, like many of the other kids, and has managed to pull straight A's for most of his life. He respects his sister for becoming a trainer, but would rather work in the industry of District 1, rather than train children to kill.
Jay's family is rather well off, even by District 1 standards. His mother, an avid socialite, liked to dress her children up when they were young to show off at parties, and even now, at 15 and 21, Jay and Kim still find themselves in silly outfits, being paraded around by their proud mother. Jay's father works in the gem industry, cutting, appraising and grading jewels and crystals to be used as jewelry and in clothing and products for the Capitol. Jay has had the inkling for many years now that he's like to go into the same industry when he's old enough.
