Gabrielle O'Dale
Lost in skies of powdered gold
Caught in clouds of silver ropes
Showered by the empty hopes
As I tumble down, falling fast to the ground
Caught in clouds of silver ropes
Showered by the empty hopes
As I tumble down, falling fast to the ground
Gunner La Torre had lain her on the conveyor belt, brusied and burning flesh, blood seeping out through her clothes between the fibres of fabric. The blood was warm against her skin, but it did not flow like water. It moved like treacle, thick and sticky, edging over her skin slowly in dendritic patterns, blood pooling in her belly button and in her ear.
She could taste blood now too, the iron scalded her tongue and made her break out a choked sob but breathless she gasped in pain as she tried to make a sound. Her chest felt constricted, tight, each breath bought a new struggle to breath again; each inhale and exhale was getting harder and harder.
The young blonde watched the others, her hands barely bound at the wrists as the other alliance took them captive. They’d let Geo, her District partner, go to Abel in his final moments on this earth but she did not see his last second before the canon fired. She’d closed her eyes tightly and moved her head to face the ceiling; she had been cowardly, she had not want to see him die. I don’t want to see anyone die...she thought to herself, her lip quivering as the sound of the canon echoed through the arena.
The hovercraft came and took his body, took it home. Lucky she had thought, even though she knew she would be next.
Except she wasn’t. She had to wait. She watched the others, the lion girl and Nat Krigel, try to capture strange little things they called Delivery Words. The were fluttering about, gently in the golden light as the sun gently set, like dust particles caught on a gust of gently wind, only interrupted by the other tributes trying to capture one or two, even Tybalt joint in even though he had been kept prisoner.
The sound, during that time, was strange and foreign. There was laughter and, cursing and people joking amongst themselves; for a moment Gabrielle forgot where she was, only reminded by the sounds of the canons that cracked through the air marking another tributes death. Gabrielle took another sharp breath in, waiting for her canon to sound. please...she begged closing her eyes tightly wishing for it all just to end please the pain is too much please...
Soon the delivery words dispersed and things calmed, a fire was lit. Though Gabrielle was some way away from the other alliances fire, she should have still at least felt the warmth of its glow but she didn’t. Her, now, ashen skin felt like ice in the musky evening air and though she knew it was warm and there should have been that distant summers heat hovering in the air. Only cold, and the pain that gripped her body in a vice. She was still crying but, her tears had run dry long ago; the taste of blood still on her lips.
One by one, her friends and enemies fell into a slumber, their heads drooping and their bodies pressed against one another in a desperate attempt for warmth, or something else. Gabrielle would have blushed at the sounds she heard coming from the others camp but she barely had the energy to keep her eyes open anymore. I don’t want to sleep yet she thought, her eyes drooping as she inhaled and exhaled, softly breathing slower and slower as each breath became even more of a struggle.
Sleep came anyway.
Sleep came, too easy for her that night. It was like a gentle wave crashing on the ocean shore, washing over the beach before retreating; that is what this sleep felt like. Like a wash of fresh water, running over her body, she drifted off with ease and a strange contentment she had not felt before. The pain of breathing was still there but with each passing moment, it became less and less so. Gabrielle could feel the darkness surrounding her, dreamless void of her resting mind, but it was not suffocating. It calmed her.
For a long while she felt as if she were lying on a deep, neverending, black body of water. The sky and sea had no distingushing features, other than Gabi floated in one and not the other; but she was unsure which she was floating in. Would I float in the sky like I would float in the sea? she did not know. She had never been to the sea, she had never seen the waves crash against the sand but she imagined that this is what it must of been like.
She floated there for a long time, her mind slowly falling away bit by bit without her noticing. Flashes of memories, long forgotten, blinded her eyes for seconds before fading into the darkness; the memories were both good and bad but the girl from District 6 did not mind.
Soon she forgot she was from District 6, she nearly forgot her name if it were not for the last and final memory that was rooted deeply into her mind; like a motion picture it played in front of her, bright and colourful against the blackness.
She were no more than a babe, a bundle of pink with a gurgling cry as she was bought into this world and a flurry of pain and screams. Everything had calmed, but the babe still screamed, filling its little lungs with air for the first few breaths; there were faces, all blured and strange. That scared her and made the babe cry more. With each cry, the woman would coo and aww and fuss over the small baby girl held in its mothers arms; which, in turn, caused her to cry more.
Then a strange noise happened, whispered voices, and her mother smiled. Her lips moved, incoherently calling someone over to the bed and the moments later, there was a new face amongst the crowd. She was different, to the other woman. Curious and young, baby faced with ringlets of blackish brown hair tumbling over her face. The face was, actually, less than curious more confused and concerned looking, their brow furrowed and eyes slightly narrowed at the small infant. The baby continued to cry, scrunched eyes and squirming arms.
"It's weird” said the new stranger, their brow furrowing even more.
The woman, the mother, laughed and told the girl that this was her baby sister. The little babe open their eyes, green and stark against her pink soft skin; her eyes fixated on the girl with the curls. It was as if something clicked inside her, a wash of comfort blanketed her suddenly as the elder toddler gazed down at her; the baby suddenly felt very very safe and so she stopped crying. Even when the other woman awed and cooed at the suddenly end of the wailing, she did not cry again- she was too focused on this strange person.
The mother spoke, and suddenly the world shifted and she was being held by the girl with curly black hair and brown eyes. Questions were asked and that was the moment that the babe learnt her name was Gabrielle. The two girls, Gabrielle and the dark haired child, they stared at one another, in awe and fascination, an odd sense of warmth filling them both as a bond was formed in those first few moments of life.
“Brienne!” she cried out, her voice echoing into the void, only to be replied by the echo back
Suddenly, Gabrielle was falling. Falling, falling. She tried to scream and she tried to cry but she could not scream or cry, she just fell. Tumbling through the void with an odd sense of calm washing over her like the waves on the beach or a gentle summer breeze against hot skin.
Brienne… she thought clawing at the last images of her sister she held. I don’t want to go...Gabrielle wanted to cry but she still fell, tumbling and tumbling again. She wanted her sister. She wanted to be back home in 6. She wished she had never had to volunteer.
Closing her eyes, she wished it all to just be over.
She fell, the void suddenly bursting into light, all the colours of the rainbow, a beautiful spectrum of colour and life. Death is not exciting..she thought it is dull...
Gabrielle O’Dale’s blue, ashen, lips parted, her chest rattling as she inhaled, then exhaled.
A few moments later, a canon sounds.
She could taste blood now too, the iron scalded her tongue and made her break out a choked sob but breathless she gasped in pain as she tried to make a sound. Her chest felt constricted, tight, each breath bought a new struggle to breath again; each inhale and exhale was getting harder and harder.
I know I'll wither so peel away the bark
Because nothing grows when it is dark
In spite of all my fears, I can see it all so clear
I see it all so clear
Because nothing grows when it is dark
In spite of all my fears, I can see it all so clear
I see it all so clear

Cover your crystal eyes
And feel the tones that tremble down your spine
Cover your crystal eyes
And let your colours bleed and blend with mine

Making waves in pitch black sand
Feel the salt dance on my hands
Raw and charcoal coloured thighs feel so cold
And my skin feels so paper-thin
Feel the salt dance on my hands
Raw and charcoal coloured thighs feel so cold
And my skin feels so paper-thin

But I'm okay in see-through skin
I forgive what is within
Because I'm in this house
I'm in this home
All my time
I forgive what is within
Because I'm in this house
I'm in this home
All my time
