Nestled in the tallest buildings of downtown is a battlefield of children with iron fists and fire raging beneath the ground. It is a place where wild tears through the air, unleashed at last from the rigid composure of children squirming to break free of scrutinizing eyes. It is a haven - our haven - built with a foundation of ruthlessness. Bold and black in the cement floors and walls of the club is pride, exuding into the atmosphere of sweat and deafening cheering.
Fight club is not easily forgotten. It makes its mark in your memory, a deep score in your mind, the moment your foot touches down on the cold, hard floor of the underground club. Left barren in skin and a white tank top and shorts, devoid of the comfort of armor, the riotous crowd surrounding a ring of two teenagers beating each other black and blue is petrifying - at least, to a first timer.
Not me. No longer am I the nervous girl shrunken away from the feral attitude woven into the concrete around us. I am a regular, a native to this battlefield. Within the ring, I am a lion fueled by adrenaline and might. My bones were carved into the bones of a warrior, but the blade never grazed my soul. But here, I am the warrior I was molded to be - the warrior I was meant to be.
Before Carrica, my opponent, fangs protrude from my mouth and claws, which once felt so horrific on my body, click together in anticipation. As my fist, clenched so hard it feels like a dense ball of steel, cuts through the air on its journey to Carrica's flesh, I feel my bones rattle with the adrenaline that races through my body.
I feel so alive.
