kirito
victor of the 70th hunger games
"You okay?" The question kept on ringing through Kirito's skull as Rhyme's body fell over and over and over again. Tears soaked the surface of Kirito's cheeks as he continued to scream out in response. "No I'm not okay, I'm not okay! Rhyme please wake up please! Don' leave meh! Rhyme! Rhyme!" The screams continued to sear into Kirito's mind as the question just continued ticking on and on. Every passing second burning grief deeper and deeper into Kirito's mind as he finally screamed shattering the land around him and thrusting him into an unavoidable hole of darkness.
Sweat drenched every inch of Kirito's body as he flung up and frantically thrashed in his silk sheets. "Rhyme!" He bellowed as he searched desperately around for her only to find the darkness of night whizzing swiftly by outside the window. Kirito's heart continued to race as he curled his knees into his burning chest wounds and buried his head onto them. Kirito could feel himself panting as his body shacked viciously as though he was locked away in Katelyn's arena.
The constant sound of the wheels spinning below him allowed Kirito to slowly regain his calm. Yet even with his heart settling the vision of Rhyme's dead body and the sound of her canon hung directly in front of all his thoughts. Just the knowledge of Kirito's arrival in District One sent chills down his spine as her voice and her jokes spun madly on. In less than a day he would be face to face with the family she loved so much. With those who she had left behind.
Kirito's own voice scuttled through his head as his promise to himself greeted him again. He promised that he would love Rhyme's family like his own and he would protect them for her no matter what the cost. A promise meant everything to Kirito, especially this particular one. Rhyme had been the one person who always cared and looked out for him and now he had to repay that debt. She was never just his ally but always so much more.
Kirito felt the train begin to sway as its wheels began to come to an complete halt. Outside the window the familiar lights of a refueling station greeted Kirito's eyes. Without hesitation Kirito pushed himself up from his bed making sure to be extra careful so he wouldn't aggravate his healing chest. A sudden swirl of fog made Kirito remember to disconnect himself from his morphine before he stumbled out of the train and let the cool night's breeze engulf him.
One of the station's peace keepers called out to him yet when Kirito turned to face him the man instantly apologized and returned to his other duties. Just as Kirito knew these keepers knew that there was no where for Kirito to go to or to run away to. He was a Capitol star and a Quell Victor none the less. He had extremely high expectations that if he didn't meet Kirito was sure his family would pay the price. A price Kirito knew was much to hefty to pay.
A lone whistle pierced the light as Kirito's gaze lifted to the stars. Somewhere out there Kirito prayed that Rhyme truly was in the spot light she deserved. He also couldn't help but hope one day he would be in the front row like he told her he would. Alas though his moment lost in the enticing sky was stolen from him as a peace keeper forced Kirito back onto the train.
As the train lurched forward and continued its onward journey closer and closer to the Capitol Kirito found himself in the main train car with a bottle in his hand. Kirito watched as he swirled the light orange liquid swirled in its bottle before he lifted it to his lips. A bitter symphony of tastes erupted across Kirito's mouth as he spit the liquid out and let the bottle shatter on the ground. It would appear that not even the promise of getting drunk would not save him from his pit of grief.
Deep from below the prism of light within Kirito's thoughts he could hear Kiri whispering on about how weak Kirito was and how he deserved the crown. However Kirito had learned to ignore the demon's comments. Ever since the Finale Kirito was in charge and he planned to keep things that way until the very end. Kiri had taken the spot light he desired so much in the games but now this was Kirito's life to live.
Morning sent its rays shimmering into the train just as the train traveled through the gates of District One. Only several minutes later Kirito's styling team came rushing into the car as bubbly and annoying as ever yet when they saw him they nearly fainted. "Kirito! Why did you stay up all night you look awful!" Kirito let out an annoyed grunt as he turned to face them. "Nah only half the night. Otha' than that I was asleep driftin' through the darkness."
Shockingly Kirito's words seemed to surprise the team enough that they simply got to work preparing him for the ceremony. Once Kirito was fully dressed in a steel grey suit with a Rhyme's golden belt buckle attack to his pants did they back away and smile. Kirito found himself looking in the mirror not at his well polished hair or nicely done make up but at the shimmering buckle. It was the last thing of Rhyme's he had and it only made him proud to wear it on the last stop of his tour.
Time seemed to vanish into thin air as Kirito felt like a blink later he was hearing his name announced by the District's mayor over the loud speaker. Fear gripped Kirito's body as he stiffly walked out in front of the crowd. The moment Kirito laid eyes on the large shimmering screen of Rhyme he tried not to gasp from grief. However what truly sent a knife into Kirito's heart was the young blonde girl standing beneath her illuminated sister. She looked so much like Rhyme yet now Kirito stood before them not her. Not the one she really needed.
Clearing his throat quietly Kirito spoke as straight toned into the microphone as he could without showing his true sadness. "Greetins' to y'all of District One. First of all I would like to thank ya for havin' me here today. Howeva' I know I am not the person ya hoped I would be. I am not Tybalt an' I ain't Rhyme. Both of em' were amazin' fightas and amazin' people. Now I neva' got the chance to speak to Tybalt but from what I heard he was a truly honorable man. I say man because Tybalt Capulet proved to y'all an' to meh that he was a man by how strongly he fought until the very end. As for Rhyme..." Kirito couldn't help but stop for a moment as his voice nearly broke. "Rhyme I did know very well. Rhyme was the first persun who showed meh they cared for othas'. Rhyme was always there for meh whenever I needed anythin'. Rhyme was more than just an ally she was my anchor. When I felt that all hope was lost she could restore it. Rhyme Morales was a star. A star that went out far to early because I couldn' protect her like she always protected meh. Now I ain't gonna stand here an' apologize to all of y'all cause no amount of I'm sorry will bring em back to y'all. Howeva' I do promise y'all that I will neva' forget em' and will always do meh best to make sure their lives were not wasted. Thank y'all for ya time."
Clapping and even cheers raced into Kirito's artificial ears as he turned quickly and nearly ran off the stage. Once behind the doors in the Justice Building even the morphine could not stop a sob or two from coming out of his body and sending waves of pain from his chest. However the rapid sound of footsteps approaching him from behind made him quickly control himself as he turned to face whoever it was. Yet what he saw only sent another shock of grief through Kirito's shattered heart.
There is a Key to every gate and every exit,Sweat drenched every inch of Kirito's body as he flung up and frantically thrashed in his silk sheets. "Rhyme!"
