Week Two: Egg Toss

Egg Toss



Welcome, to the egg toss event. During this event, you will be partnered with another person. You will start off standing next to each other to where you can hand the egg successfully. After the first hand off, each of you will move 1ft back. You will face each other again, and toss the egg. You will keep taking steps back until you drop the egg. Whoever is the last team standing with the furthest toss, will win.

The execution of this event is simple. You may roleplay your characters getting ready to for the event. In this thread, you will roll the dice up until YOU drop an egg. Whoever you are teamed up with will do the same. ALL IN THIS THREAD. Whenever you roll that you dropped the egg, you will stop posting. Your partner will roll until they drop the egg. Once they drop the egg, staff will look to see who dropped the egg first, and that will be the score that's recorded. For the first toss after the hand off, you will roll [*roll=1-2] 1 is successful, and 2 is unsuccessful. For the start of the second round, you will roll [*roll=1-3] 1 & 3 are successful, and 2 is unsuccessful. For each roll, you will add 1 number to it. The odd numbers are successful, and the even are unsuccessful. This will go on until someone drops the egg. When you drop the egg, you are out. The other three teams can still keep going to make successful catches. If there is a tie, the teams will be given one more egg to toss, and you will repeat the dice rolls until it's dropped. The first team to drop the egg, will lose. The last team standing, will win. The scores will be updated continuously.

NOTE: You will roll until you drop the egg, and your partner will roll until they drop the egg. Whoever drops the egg first, will be when the egg is dropped

For the longest time I never understood why people would waste perfectly good food. Like right now I'm standing in a group at an event called the egg toss. All of these eggs can be used to feed everyone who's in need, but I guess the Capitol doesn't see it that way. They think it'll be fun to toss a raw egg around hoping that your partner catches it. I mean what's the point? Sure a prize is involved for whoever wins, but it just doesn't make sense to me. It won't ever make sense because nothing makes sense anymore.

Time after time I find myself wondering what it would be like if Lily was still here standing along with the rest of the Hope family in the middle of the Highland Games. Sure she would enjoy it. Sure she would have fun with us all. That's what she would want. She would want all of us to have fun in life. There's a time to mourn. A time to weep. A time to laugh. A time to rejoice. It's all just laid out before us.

I look at Paige as we're told we're partners. It's nice having a partner that I know.

"Hey, Paige, at least we're together." I chuckle softly as I hold the egg in my hand. I don't want to waste it, but right now I don't have much of a choice. I want to win this event. Not for me. Not for Paige, but for Lily. "Let's do this."

And I hand the egg off before moving back a foot as instructed, and then the fun begins.

Telling my father about the three-legged race was hard enough, explaining why I chose the egg toss over the pole climbing was simply impossible. ”You’re absolutely useless Renly” And he has only just figured that out. Maybe the Egg Roulette or the Cheese Roll will suffice his needs…ha.

Eggs being chucked back and forth, so much wasted food, I do hope some poor soul isn’t starving to death because of this.

Sadly, Wynn does not join me in this game. We did great as a pair in the race and I am sure we would’ve been a great egg toss partnership. Explaining to my father my relationship with him will be much harder than discussing the activities I chose in these games.

I am partnered with somebody I have never seen before, probably a foreigner. I haven’t been mingling with these faces from a faraway place, I should really visit the village and say hello. I am sure there are a lot of tales to be told from District Twelve and Eight, which I am intrigued to know.

”Hey, I hope you can catch.” I’d say to my partner, clasping the egg in my palm. Softly passing it between my hands, I try not to break it already. Standing in a prepared stance, I’d wait for the starting orders.

Nothing is better than doing something against your own will. Except for maybe getting blamed for something you didn't do. Or dying. I'm not sure about dying, though. I haven't done that yet. I didn't even want to come to District 7 to participate in the stupid "Highland Games". I didn't even want to leave the house. I have no benefits from winning a stupid event here. My family probably saw a poster with some of the possible prizes, and signed me up.

I head down towards the area I'm supposed to go for the egg toss. After the rules are read, I hate this event even more. Well, shit. I have to interact with someone. I can't wait to get this over with.

I glance over at who I'm partnered with, and I sigh. I don't even recognize her. Please don't mess up this. I hand off the egg and I pray she knows what she's doing.

Paige Hope

My head spins after everything that was going on, like my atrocious time on the pole climb. I could have done better than that, right? The whole purpose of this was to make Lily happy from wherever she was, and my partner, my cousin Canvas, understood that. It was his goal too. He loved Lily like me, and now our goal is to just make it so that Lily is happy wherever she is, and winning some events for her are what we believe will make her happy. To see us participating.

I walk up to Canvas, just about a foot away, and I nod and smile at what Canvas is saying. I'm not really in a talking mood, and I just want to get too this. I get ready for him to throw the egg, and then I hope with all my might that Lily is somewhere watching us, helping us to do our best, and for the first time in weeks, I smile.

I have never liked the idea of killing animals for food but when you haven't eaten in three days because your mother hasn't moved from her bed in a while and your father is working 12 hour days and the cupboard is nearly empty you learn to put your morals aside and focus on surviving. I never liked the idea of competing but when they've promised you food for victory and this time you won't walk away with 23 deaths at your fingertips you learn to toughen up and put on a winning face, scratching your name down next to the easy things that promise to fill your stomach. I never liked the idea of teamwork because I cannot rely on anyone else but myself to pick up the pieces and try and force them back together again but when they tell you to pair up and try not to smash the egg in your hands you grit your teeth and smile and put your faith in the hands of a stranger.

I never liked leaving my fate to chance and the laws of gravity and whether or not my co-ordination is up to par but I throw the damn egg anyway and don't flinch when it hits the ground.

You hate other people. Being around them makes you disgusted. Not because you are repulsed by them, but by the fact that they are a loose cannon. That you have no control over them. And this time, well, you have you work with someone. It isn't someone that you decided to work with, but you were thrown to. And the worst thing is, everything in this event will be judged for the two of you. And you don't even know his name.

The egg toss was perhaps going to be the highlight of these games. Eggs - soaring though the air and hopefully into the cushioned, cupped hands of another. 

We were quickly paired up, my partner a boy who hadn't caught my eye before. He seemed decent enough, but seeing as this was a competition after all, it would be his skills which I depended on.

And it could be fun. To look down a line and see eggs fly only to splat into someone's hand. It takes a lot to make me smile, and if this whole ordeal isn't over in the blink of an eye, it might achieve just that.

But of course, it wasn't as simple as thinking the situation through in my head. Projections of my imagination made it seem simple, but as I looked as the other contestants, egg shells on their palms, whites covering them like blood - it was a definite case of 'easier said than done'.
