Week Three: Log Toss

LOG TOSS



Welcome, competitors, to the log toss. In this event, you will see how far you can throw a 100 pound (45.45kg) 12ft (3.6 meter) long log. You will balance the log in your hands so that it's standing vertically. You will have three attempts to see how far you can throw the log. Once it's landed, an official will measure the end of the log closest to the throwing line. Out of the three throws, the furthest one will count. If there is a tie, the second furthest throw will determine who wins. Remember to strive to make your district and your family proud.

The execution of this event is simple. You may roleplay your characters getting ready to throw the log. At the bottom of your post, you will roll [*roll=6000+6500] 3 times to see how far you throw each log. (example: 6988 will have a decimal point making it 69.88 inches. Want to make sure to have the hundredths in the decimal point.) The furthest throw will be recorded as the official score. In the event of a tie, the second furthest throw will be used to determine the overall winner. After you posted, feel free to edit your post with the results. The list will be updated continuously with each score.

There isn't a posting order.

My thin frame sits drooped on the tree I had been coming too for the past few weeks when I needed a place to sleep. Why had I signed up for the log toss? I was fourteen. I am one of the weakest children in my family. How could I lift a one hundred pound log and throw it into the air farther than anyone else. I guess I was caught up in the moment. Maybe someone had drugged me before I signed up. I don't know.

I stood in front of the log now, a long wooden shaft. I try to lift it up, and I barely manage, my small frame seeming like a midget against the log, and then, using all the little strength I had, I threw, and threw, and threw.

My arms are soggy pasta noodles against the weight of the log, but my body hums with determination and my heart is relentless, beating like a drum beneath the scrutinizing eyes of the judges. Part of me wishes to crumble into a ball before them, but the other half is screaming and shouting for me to show that I

Joey Cypher. He had lost almost everything. Deimos. Henry. Wyatt. Three of his sort of friends had passed away because of the hunger games. The sun was shining high in the sky as Joey was competing in something that people called the Highland Games. this was his chance to prove that he wasn't the worst one in the district. He wanted to find his own strength to do things himself. The man wanted to move on. He wasn't really all that tall, but he had some strength that he could use. Joey was waiting to go. His mind was wandering off like it always does. He never could keep focus on one simple thing. The simplest of things could toss him up. Joey was watching as the 14 year old girl was up. His eyes watched her, she seemed so small and Joey expected her to do terrible, but then she threw it and it went far. Joey swallowed a lump that he didn't realize formed.

Joey was up now. His eyes focusing on the twelve foot log that was going to be the one he was throwing. He lifted the log into his hands and held it from the bottom like many of the lumber men would carry it. It felt like it would be a good form for the throwing. Joey stared ahead, his eyes focusing on the grass that went on for what felt like forever. His focused look was stuck and Joey spoke quietly as he lifted his hands to throw the log, "For you my princess..." Joey launched the log once, twice, and three times.

He was expected to be great at everything he did. Arbor won the games when he was two years younger than him, for Ripred's sake. Brendon had been reaped when he was even younger and, yes, he died, but he hadn't gone down without a fight. People looked at Cain like they were waiting to see what incredible event he was going to do, like they knew something was supposed to happen to him and it just hadn't yet.

Well, Cain was waiting on something spectacular to happen as well.

Tossing logs? Not exactly something spectacular. If he won this, he would get some prize and that would be the end of it. If he lost, no one would care. This was not the moment for Cain's greatness, nor was it the moment for anyone's greatness (he hoped.) He prepared himself to throw by gripping the bottom of the log and bending his knees. He counted to one, two, three! in his head, and threw.

Once I found out that there was going to be a log toss at that Highland Games, I knew that's what I had to do. After who knows who's how long of lifting all those logs and twigs and whatever from before would really pay off. I could easily life the 100 lbs twig they call a log. Hopefully my competition can do the same.

The time is now. I stand in front of the logs. I feel the adrenaline pumping through my veins. Cracking my knuckles before, I lift up the logs and I chuck them as hard as I can. Good luck, bitches. I dare you all to beat me.

Of course, by now, between throwing axes, tug-o-war and work when the games weren't occurring, Andrej was starting to feel his once-broken bones ache threateningly; perhaps he was too newly mended, but now that his name was on the roster (and with the promise of a prize animal on the line), he couldn't very well go home without finishing what he started. Maybe this one will go better. At least, I hope. My face remains straight as I look around at every single competitor, and I wonder what type of life they have. Yet thinking of the possibilities only brings great sorrow. My life was going well. I had friends that I cared about, and now Wyatt is gone. It's been rough living without him, but I manage to move on. Truthfully, all I want is to make him proud. I want him to look down on me knowing that I'm doing everything to the best of my ability, and this is no different. Placing my hands under the giant log, I struggle for a moment before releasing it into the air. I'm not doing this for myself, I am doing this for him. For Wyatt.

He's not perfect, but damn it, he's trying. Nick stares down at his flask of hidden amber liquid, hands shaking, body shaking, needing something he can't have - not right now. Gripping his tremulous fingers is the wisp of his sister, her face lit up with obvious joy as she chatters on about nothing in particular. Nick squeezes her hand and nods and smiles along but really, he's staring down Johnnie and Johnnie's winning.

Johnnie always wins.

"You'll win, right?" Bonnie says, her soulful eyes searching her older brother's face. Nick looks down at her, forcing a smile to his lips. He fears it comes out like a grimace. "You'll win?"
