Arbrette Aldalómë
The Mayor's Daughter
The Mayor's Daughter
I believe, I believe,
I believe in wishing wells,
But I also believe in a lot of things,
Things the daisy tells
She doesn't understand what made Arbor famous.
"But daddy, did he do anything?"
No one knows quite how to answer that question.
"I mean," she says, "why do people treat him like a hero?"
Hero is not quite the word they would use.
"He didn't save someone, did he, or cure a plague?"
There is no way to explain killing to daddy's little girl.I believe, I believe
that a four-leaf clover brings,
Lots of luck, lots of joy, lots of happiness,
I believe those things.
She doesn't understand what it's like to be hungry.
"But daddy, why would anyone dig around in the trash?"
No one knows how to say it, but they try, "because they are hungry."
That doesn't make sense to her.
"Surely they have real food. Why don't they eat that?"
There is no way to explain hunger to a rich man's child. And when it's christmas time
I believe in santa claus,
Why do I believe, I guess that
I believe because
She doesn't understand what it's like to be afraid.
"But daddy, why do they shake when their names are called?"
There is a silence as they try to figure out what to say.
"They get to see the Capitol, they should be glad!"
There is no way to explain fear to the Mayor's daughter.I believe, I believe,
I believe that dreams come true,
If you wish for a dream by a wishing well,
Don't tell your wish or you'll break the spell
Everything in her appearance was District twelve, and yet she never looked like she belonged. Her long black hair, trailing to the middle of her back, and olive skin gave the impression that she came from the seam. However, she has pale eyes that certainly didn't come from there. As well, there would be no mistaking the air around her - this is a girl who is used to getting whatever she wants with no fuss. She has never wanted for anything a day of her life.
There isn't anything particularly stunning about her, in fact she is rather bland and ordinary, but her personality defines her in any crowd. Naïve as a tame deer, she sees the world without fear - and yet without bravery as well. People part around her like the water around a boat, not wanting to be accused of interfering with the mayor's daughter, who she so obviously is. No one could think of her as anyone else.
Plenty of others girls in District twelve are more attractive, though she never acknowledges this. Her curves are developing late, barely differentiating her from her brothers unless she wears a distinctly feminine type of clothing. Her stature isn't large, if anything being smaller than average, but that just gives her the appearance of a gentle bird. By no means unhealthy, she doesn't quite reach the five feet she claims and each limb is thin. Her bones are slight and seem as though they could break at the slightest touch, a physical representation of her bubble world. Inside her mind, through her eyes, the world is perfect as it is. The only thing that could make things better is a trip to the Capitol.
For that reason, she always feels an eagerness to hear her name in the reaping. She wants to see the Capitol and all of its glory. No one has explained to her what really happens the two children are chosen. If anyone tried she would surely deny their words. When she watches the Games, all she sees is a clever reality television show with amazing stunts. There is no correlation in her mind between the shaking pair standing on the stage in the District Square and the two faces from Twelve that light up the sky as the Games continue. As far back as she can remember, there hasn't been another Victor from District twelve. To her, the pair of children are taken care of in the Capitol for the rest of his life, as service for putting on a good performance.
Despite being the eldest child of Mayor Ethul Aldalómë, she acts like the youngest. With her small frame, she often passes as younger than she really is. Still, she always wishes to be treated like an adult - unless she wants her father to baby her - and is continually trying to impress the males at school with displays of her wealth. Lacking understanding, she ends up driving everyone away with what seems snobbish showing off. Even so, she continues on, oblivious to the truth of the world.
You can not learn what you do not want to know.It may sound naive,
But that's what I happen to believe.
