The ashes fell like snow upon her skin.
Things moved slowly as she spun around and blinked at roaring yellow, orange, blue. Wood crackled beneath the beast, the air poisoned by its exhales. Then suddenly the ashes were flames, and she could hear herself screaming as her skin became like paper, blackening and peeling away -
Finley woke up to strong hands grasping her wrists, but even then she still leaped from her bed and spread her palms out over her arms to put out the fires. Gradually, reality sank in - the embers that had been searing into her just moments ago faded into the patches of scars that warped the skin on her slender arms. There were more beneath her pajama pants to match. She ran a hand through her mess of red curls, lifting her eyes to meet her brother’s.
“You’ll wake them up,” Flann said softly after a moment. In a room just down the hall, Devin and Carey were fast asleep. Finley had come to love them over the years - some days she almost mistook them for her parents - but Flann still didn’t trust them.
“It was the fire,” Finley whispered, moving toward the window. Beyond the glass, her entire world glittered in the darkness, plants twisting around stone statues and wooden arches. Devin and Carey had built it just for her. She didn’t like people much, so she spent most of her time reading in the garden.
“I know,” Flann murmured after a beat of silence, and for a moment they were the same two children brought burned and bleeding to the steps of the orphanage that day.
She watched his reflection closely. “We’re never going to be the same, are we?”
He gave a wry smile. “No. We’re not.”
