Terrified eyes never leave the screen as they rest on the boy’s dying side by side as the careers from district one do what they can to patch them up. Every fiber of his being shakes rapidly as he pleads silently for his brother to stand. For Taurus to rise up and continue fighting. Yet it all seems impossible. They jumped him. Slaughtered him like a cow in district ten, but was that really the end? Thunder saw it before when Jabber was in the games during the bloodbath when they all tossed him around like a rag doll. He saw it again when Storm was in the games when the tributes kept attacking him relentlessly.
Deep inside Thunder knew, but he refused to believe it.
Five days. That was all it took for it to happen. Five days. Storm lasted four, and Thunder had hoped that since his brother lasted longer that the curse was over, yet the curse never left. It wanted to keep the family broken and sobbing in the midst of an angry storm.
His eyes were wide, and his tiny hands balled into fists as tears pricked the corner of his eyes. No, this could not be happening. Taurus can’t die. But the seconds ticked away as the blood continued pouring from the body of a lifeless boy. And soon they would all die. Only one would escape from the arena, and he knew the odds were against his brother. He begged for Taurus to stay home. He pleaded with the peacekeepers.
But they stole him anyway.
“Taur..us.” His voice was quiet as the words quivered past his lips. Just like when Storm died. Just like when Jabber died. This time was different. Thunder wouldn’t become a coward and try to end his life. He promised Taurus he would remain strong. That he wouldn’t watch the games, yet that was a promise the tiny boy couldn't keep. It lingered in front of him. It danced before his eyes as the district one male removed the bell from the pocket. His bell. Thunder gave it to Taurus for the games. He offered it to him for the protection because through the many years it protected him. Anytime he was in need, all he had to do was ring the bell, and his brother would meet him.
The tune buzzed through his ears as the bell rang wildly throughout the arena. A joyful tune soon spilt tears down the cheeks of a lonely brother. It rang loud and free. Yet the meaning was far worse than any freedom. Taurus was finding an escape. A chance to run away from the reality of the world around him, but in the process, he was leaving behind a family. A mother and father. Brothers. Cousins. Every single person in the world that cared for him. None of it matters in the eyes of the Capitol. They’ll steal away every single family member a person has until nothing was left but a shell of soulless people.
“TAURUS!” His screams echoed through the room over and over. “JETT!” He screamed against as he slowly folded in on himself. The room spun around him over and over until nothing was left but the creaking of a rusty nail against a chalkboard. His mind was screaming. His heart raced inside his chest. A lump formed in the back of his throat blocking every single word from forming. The bell was silent, and the world was silent around him as a harsh sound of a cannon blasted throughout the arena quickly followed by more.
His knees buckled under the weight of his body sending the sobbing boy crashing towards the ground. Tears swam down his face forming a river below him. Violent screams echoed throughout the room blasting through the windows, but fell upon deaf ears.
He was alone.
He reached for his bell hoping to find it. Pleading with a higher being that it was all just a dream, but his hand couldn’t find it. It was on the screen. Far away from home in the games. Taurus promised he would come if he rang the bell, but it’s gone, and Taurus was gone. Thunder screamed louder and louder until he could no longer take it.
Every muscle in his body shook rapidly. His heart was racing. His breathing was shallow and labored. No. No. No.
Searching for anything to hold onto. To tether the broken boy to reality as the strings slowly unwind. Yet nothing was there. Just a pen and a sheet of paper. Grabbing the pen in his tiny hands, he wrote as fast as he could. Tears dropped from his eyes staining the sheet of paper. He had to tell Jett. To let him know where he was going so he wouldn’t worry. He couldn’t be here anymore. The entire time Taurus was gone, Thunder refused to look in his room because the hollowness was there leaving the entire place empty.
Jett,
By the time you'll read this, I'll probably be long gone. Don't worry about me. I'll be alright. I just can't be here. First jabber, then storm, now Taurus. I just want to escape. I can't stare at his room. The house. Their ghosts haunt me, and I can't deal with it. I swear they're trying to kill me. I try to find the good in the dark, but I can't. Each time I close my eyes, I see them. I see them lingering on the corners. Jett, I was the reason Taurus was arrested and sent to the detention center. It's my fault he's dead, and I can't deal with it. He saved me. He killed someone to save me, and then he was sent away forever. He won't ever be here anymore. I don't know where I'm going or where I'll be, but please don't come looking for me. I don't want nobody else to die because of me. Jabber died. Storm died. Now Taurus is dead. I might as well killed him. I can't. I don't wanna ruin anyone else. Please don't come find me. I beg you. Jett, don't forget that you're my brother and I'll always love you. I just need you to understand that this is for our own good. Maybe I'll see you soon.
Thunder
When the letter was done, he ran towards Jett’s room and tossed the tiny sheet of paper under the door before sprinting towards his room. All he grabbed was an old family picture sitting on his bedside table. The world kept spinning around him faster and faster. Voices echoed through his mind prancing rapidly telling him he wasn’t good enough. His heart skipped a beat. The sound of his feet pounding against the ground matched the rhythm of his heart and breathing.
The world was shaking. The ground shook beneath him as a narrow path opened in front of him. Running as fast as he could holding the picture close to him, the tiny boy never looked back. Getting away was his priority. He couldn’t return home to a house filled with ghosts, yet it seemed like they followed him. Their laughter was echoing through his mind. Bouncing across his skull walls as the tears continued to stream down his face.
Turning corners left and right, he never stopped until he reached the end of a back alley. His body froze and the time stood still as he collapsed towards the ground curling into a fetal position. Slowly he began to rock back and forth until the world grew dark around him.
