Post by Candida Floe ~ District 7 on Nov 21, 2015 16:45:36 GMT -5
Candida Floe hated errands.
She hated walking past the quaint little shops on her way to the butcher's to grab some meat for dinner. She hated walking past the storefronts because she saw District 7's elite, the ones who got to go to the highland Games whenever they wanted, buying all the things she could never have. Candida was not horribly poor, but she wasn't in a position to be buying scented candles and painted carvings, either.
Dad wanted some squirrel for dinner. The lumberyard had been hard today. Candida worked there with her father and older brothers, Rhett and Ryland. They'd started into a new acre of trees, mostly pines, with some oaks and birches scattered in between. Then the wolf pack was discovered, Mr. Bloomington was attacked...
The wolves had been subdued, but Mr. Bloomington didn't have the money for a doctor, and he was probably already dead if he hadn't found a healer. Mrs. Baxter and Shelby Griffith were injured, and everyone was having a horrible day.
Candida also hated the square because the Justice Building loomed nearby. Memories came quick and fast; her mother, sneaking into the building in the dark of night. Her mother, in chains. Her mother, hanging in the gallows...
Candida sighed as she pushed through the door into the butcher's store. It was a haphazardly built wooden shack that was dirty and unkempt, looking out of place among the quaint, stylish boutiques. A few flies buzzed around the shop as Candida walked over to the counter.
Bart grunted in greeting. Candida quickly demanded some squirrel, and she dished out the appropriate amount of money as Bart slapped the slab of squirrel meat onto the counter. Candida had brought her leather messenger bag with her, and she wrapped the meat in a cheesecloth from her house. She said a short farewell to Bart, stuffing the meat in her bag. Then she trotted out the door.
Candida was just about to slip through a back alleyway to make her way back to her house when she spotted someone standing in front of one of the boutiques. She was frozen in place. She couldn't believe what she saw.
