Name:
Kimber Lumina Berkeley
Age:
13
Gender:
Female
District/Area:
District 5 - Power
Codeword: Odair
Appearance:
Kimber Berkeley works in the power district that fuels all of Panem, so she's inside a large power complex as a daily job. This makes her skinny and rather pale. She has auburn hair, as common for those in District 5's Coriolanus Power Plant (named for President Snow, of course.) Kimber has amber eyes that are always cast down, as she is very quiet and can't hold a gaze at all. Her figure is light and limber, as children in District 5 are allowed to wander around the power plants. Several times as a girl, she wandered the wrong way and got stuck somewhere high. She became athletic because she had a tendency to get stuck in the worst possible spots in the plant. She is 5 ft 3 inches and 100 pounds.
Kimber's clothing style is typical of District 5. She wears a protective hat to shield her eyes from bright light created when producing power. A satchel for her lunch, hardy olive shirt, khaki skirt, brown work boots, olive protective coat, and olive cap make up her daily work gear. (Girl on left's clothing) This outfit befits her plain status within District 5 - standard-issued work gear. Kimber has a pair of protective, cream-colored gloves that both protect her hands and are warm in those chilly winters. Her non-work clothing in District 5 is like the girl on the right's minus the goggles. Her district is the wealthiest non-Career district, and so she has decent clothing.
Personality:
Kimber Berkeley's personality is a very interesting one. She is a terrible liar and easily manipulated, but she is so trusting and believes that people always have an ounce of good in them, whether easy to see or buried deep within. She's excellent with complex problems (she does them on a daily basis to fix algorithms in the plant) and quite agile and fast from getting frequently stuck. She has a knowledge of edible plants and berries from a book that is a family heirloom. Kimber is, however, not very strong at all and poor at navigating. She is friendly enough, but shy at first and self-conscious. Kimber's parents believe she is gifted and push her to try new things, but she doesn't feel she's intelligent enough for schooling in a Career district.
As for her morals, she has a good moral compass. However, it is somewhat lacking in ambition to change any of the current Panem systems like the Hunger Games. She has a younger sister, Cassia, and is sad whenever little Cassia gets bullied at school. Kimber has a passive nature and prefers to solve conflicts without fighting. She can be passive-aggressive if the matter is important.
The Coriolanus Power Plant, where she works ten hours a day from 8 am to 6 pm, shaped most of her early life and her current life. She enjoys working with machines and making machines, and she is excellent with problem-solving. Kimber lacks the training and drive the Careers have, which instantly would make her a target. Living in District 5 has given her a valuable knowledge of systems, but she doesn't understand the practical trades like building things and mining.
History:
The Berkeley family was well-established long before Kimber came along as an upper-middle class family who had a clever knowledge of systems, power, and efficiency. When she did eventually come along, it was to busy parents who nevertheless made time for her to come darting around the factory and add some childlike joy to workers' days. She knows the factory like the back of her hand and adores the beloved place that she grew up in. Kimber has a small extended family: an aunt and uncle on her paternal side and a grandmother on her maternal side. They don't see each other a lot due to the bustling nature of their district in general.
Her life had always been simple, repetitive, and laid out all for her. She had a set schedule and was easygoing and relaxed. But then she learned of the Reaping during school, and ever since, she has been on tenterhooks waiting for her time to pass so she could grow up and not be Reaped. When she was twelve, she took out one tessera for Cassia and one for herself, but she was fortunately not Reaped and began work as a system analyst and problem solver at the Coriolanus plant. Kimber is vigilant and always waiting with bated breath for the worst to happen.
She has a nine-year-old sister, Cassia, and a caring mother and father whose greatest fear is their daughters being killed in the Hunger Games. She had a fun-filled childhood that turned into a serious career. Her family is busy and almost never at home, and she sometimes had to take Cassia to the plant with her so she could remember to buy dinner for both of them at the local market. Her family makes a decent amount of income, having enough to pay for necessities and the biweekly "treat themselves" occasion. Kimber has a few friends from the plant, but prefers to be independent and on her own.
Other:
She is easily surprised. Also, Kimber stole two rolls from a market stand several years back, but it was only so she and Cassia could eat that night. A burglar had pickpocketed her parents while they ate dinner and there was no money for she and Cassia to buy dinner. Kimber hid the rolls from Peacekeepers by sneaking them under her jacket and passing them off as her hands hidden in her pockets. She felt very guilty, but realized that if she hadn't done that, she might have starved.
