Not here, he thought, and it was true. To be in District Six, to prosper, to survive, people had to be brilliant and... maybe somewhere, he got lost in his own mind, where letters danced free of their places in words and sentences. Maybe he got lost in the tears the bled from hopeless green eyes when no one was around to pat him on the back.

He had only made it this far because Avery took on the task of tutoring him from the time she was still loosing baby teeth until now. She was smart. She would give the leaders of Panem a run for their money someday, and he would be lost along the way, a forgetful face with a forgetful name in a fiercely competitive district. Brilliance was a game, and he was no good at playing.

Avery would be mayor someday, he thought, and he would be fine with scratching a pencil across bare parchment, watching as his lines became stories painted on paper.

He thought he would have done well in a place like District One, or even the Capitol, where art was appreciated. But he was designated to this District, and nothing was to be done about it.

Avery placed a new pencil in his hand, swiping the broken halves of his old one into a trash bin.

"Let's keep going." she smiled, and he smiled back.

He could do that. For now.
