Aunt Sally tells me I'm too clever for my own good. Ma died when I was too young to remember, so she's the one who's been raising me, and she's quite a no-nonsense woman. But with a boyish grin and just the right touch of charm I can get away with pretty much anything. An extra sweet or two at the grocer's, an escape from punishment, but more importantly the admiration of the other schoolboys. This one time I hid the shoes of the class brat, who nobody liked, and Mr. Penguin actually got mad at him for losing them! Well, that's just what we call our teacher behind his back, cause he's kinda stern and really fat.
I can never wait to be out of that guy's stuffy classroom. The towering trees and fresh air are the best part of our district, and I could explore the forests for hours, when Aunt Sally is too busy to force me to stay home and study. I reckon I can climb trees better than most anyone, even some of the lumberjacks who work in them. Me and my buddies sometimes race each other, in the forest, and talk about the local heroes who used to roam them in the old District Seven folk stories. Life must have been really different for them back then.
There's not much in life I worry about, really. I mean, of course there's the reapings, but Aunt Sally is always careful that I'll never need to take tesserae. It's easy to be happy at little things like a sunny day out in the woods or a delicious treat or the thrill of a prank well played. Isn't that right? *smirk*
