one.
He was not just a boy.
He was not a precious thing.
He was "Kellan. Fucking. Fray."
And no one would ever forget it.
But now, when he looked in the mirror, he felt like he was just a boy, a precious thing. He did not feel like Kellan Fray. For the first time in his life, he felt entirely breakable.
"It's been decided," his mother said, folding her hands together and setting them assuredly onto the table.
"What? Taking in more strays?" he retorted.
"Don't." she spat, instantly. For a moment, her cool demeanor was gone, but just as quickly as she had lost it, she found it again. Her shoulders relaxed and she put her blissful expression back on.
"You are getting married, Kellan."
He remembered scoffing, acting as if he didn't give a shit what his parents had decided for him. They had planned his entire life right in front of him, as if he had no say. They had chosen his area of specialty, what classes he would take, what his training schedule would be, and they had always talked about getting him married to Petalite Shore.
He would never marry Petal.
Despite the fact that Petal and Kellan were two islands in which the bridge between had burned long before, Kellan had grown fond of Petal's sister.
"I'm not marrying Petal." he said: honestly, simply, bravely.
"No," they agreed,
"You're marrying Pyrite."
He didn't know what to say. Thank you? Fuck you? So he crossed his arms over his chest.
"She's the one you've been spending all your time with, yes?"
He scoffed.
"Yes, but--" But he had only recently accepted that he didn't hate her. Marriage? Marriage was supposed to be a long way down the line.
"But nothing. It's been decided. Her parents will be notifying her sometime this evening as well."
