sable.
Sable Faulkner was not of any importance to District One. He was just a small piece of a beautiful picture: people adorned in diamonds and bathing in gold, warriors with weapons raised high, castles built beautifully in the background. He was there, in the corner. If one squinted their eyes enough, they could see him wearing his armor, a sword drawn at his side.
That was what they all expected him to be: a white knight. He was supposed to fight away the evil and fight in favor of the light, and he was very good at it. (Mostly.)
It had come as a shock, though, when he and his parents had been invited to a party extravagant enough to be hosted by none other than the Fray family. He had classes with some of the younger children. They were all so beautiful, so talented, so very much the type of people Sable Faulkner aspired to be like.
"It's because of the promotions," His father claimed quietly as they walked down a cobblestone path and under a wrought-iron archway that said "FRAY."
"People notice hard work." his mother agreed.
The house was not a house but seemingly an entire hotel. Large sums of the palace was made of glass, the rest white wood.
"Wow," Sable said, unable to stop himself.
His father laughed.
"Get used to it, son." his Dad laughed.
The people inside all wore gowns and suits. They laughed with elegance and waved in a regal manner to one another. On the far side of the ball room, a long, narrow table sat in front of an entirely glass wall. They were all there. In the center, Mr. and Mrs. Fray. They were both aged with time, but beautiful, and definitely still capable of killing anyone who dared to test them. From the center to the outer-edges, the older children faded into the younger ones.
He noticed one girl who was a part of another famous family sitting next to one of the older boys. She had a wide face, blue eyes, and haunting black hair, and looked as if she might have died from boredom at any moment.
He noticed the twins, whispering in each other's ears and snickering mischievously, and an older girl who appeared to be reading a book under the table. But there, near the end, was the most beautiful of them all.
"Pillar," whispered his mother, "I met her a few days ago. Lovely girl. You should introduce yourself." Sable kept his eyes on the girl as his mother spoke. She was right. He should have introduced himself. He kissed his mother's hand and headed straight for her.
"Hello."
