If one asks around about Marlin, everyone seems to have something to say:
“Marlin was my best friend in school. He was the kid who was way cooler than everyone else, but still looked out for the losers, protected the kids from bullies, excelled in every sport, and despite doing next to no work seemed to do pretty well with his marks. He was probably sleeping with half the teachers though; that might explain the results. He’s a smart guy, but he never applied himself to anything other than flirting. And boy oh boy, did he flirt his way through school. We all thought he was going to be a Tribute, and I reckon he could have won the Games if he had been. He didn’t train as much as I did as a Career, but he was pretty fit and physically capable; it all seemed to come to him easily.“ - Taurus, school friend.
“I dated Marlin for a few months after we left school. It was pretty amazing. Helps that he is so gorgeous I would just stare at him sometimes. That smile, the pretty blonde hair, and those bright blue eyes that seem to sparkle with cheeky boyish charm. He can pull even the weirdest faces and still look hot. He’s so tall, broad shoulders, ripped abs...I have to stop, I’m getting all worked up thinking about him...He’d make me feel confused sometimes; like why in the HELL is a man who looks like THAT interested in me? But he always made me feel special, and so damn sexy, even when I’d just woken up and didn’t have any makeup on. It was a real shame he got bored and moved on. He wasn’t mean about it, just real matter-of-fact. Said he wanted to be with other people. I cried for weeks.” Barbs, ex-lover.
“We weren’t really friends in school, so when he agreed to come over to my place and hang out one afternoon I was so happy. Being with him would make me ‘in’ with the popular crowd, and besides, I just enjoyed his company. He makes everyone feel so good about themselves, he’s funny, everyone has a great time, lot’s of laughs. He was with me for a while but then he went off to go to the bathroom and he was gone ages! Eventually I went to check on him, make sure he hadn’t fallen in or something. He was in bed with someone - I could hear she was having a great time from the bottom of the hallway, she wasn’t being quiet about it. But when I recognised the voice was my mother’s I freaked out. I mean, she’s my Mum! My Dad is away a lot for work, but seriously? My Mum? I had to forgive him though; I mean, I tried to stay mad at him, but he’s just so darn likeable. Plus he didn’t seem to think it should stop us being friends, and it made me really popular... You’re not going to publish this are you?” Anonymous, high school friend
“Is this strictly confidential? You’re not going to pass this on to my superiors, are you? Well, in that case, Peacekeeper Armani isn’t quite as good as I wrote in my report. He’s not very focused, and seems to be more interested in chatting and socialising than knuckling down to catch criminals. I’m slightly worried that out there he’ll try to charm the criminals into being good, rather than arresting them. He also needs to be careful he doesn’t get some girl pregnant and get dishonourably discharged. But he is a total sweetheart. I’d been feeling a bit down; I was having troubles with my husband saying he wasn’t attracted to me anymore. But Marlin - I mean Cadet Armani, he made me feel so sexy, so good about myself. We’re not supposed to sleep with the cadets, especially if we’re the ones grading them, but I won’t tell if you won’t. After being with him, my confidence went up, I ditched the hubby and I found this new man who I adore. He’s not Peacekeeper Armani standards, but that’s a bit too much for day to day, if you know what I mean? I still treasure the times we spent together, not just in bed, but the hours where we’d talk and talk and he’d massage me, and read poetry to me, and make me feel like I was worthy of love and affection.” Anonymous Peacekeeper Trainer and Assessor
“I’d never really been interested in guys before him. I’d had a few girlfriends, you know, but nothing serious. I met Marlin in this bar and he was flirting his ass off with me. I was a bit uncomfortable, but, I dunno, he was really funny and friendly, so I kept talking to him. We got on really well, so we hung out more after that, he was so confident that I’d fall for his charms. He kept telling me that I didn’t know what I was missing, and that nobody is really gay, or straight, it’s just a continuum and it’s all about experiences. That’s what he always said, that ‘every experience is worthwhile’. Anyway, yeah, I just...decided I really wanted to try it, you know? With someone I trusted and really liked. And it was really good. I mean, nobody I’ve had since was really as good as he was. We hooked up a few times since, but he’s a pretty busy guy.” Brad, ex lover.
“Marlin has always been a difficult child. He gave his mother and I a great deal of worry as a teenager, still does really. We’re hopeful that his new career will give him some much needed discipline in his life. He has a lot of potential, if only he’d knuckle down and apply himself. We spent a lot of money on his training as a Career, but he squandered that too, preferring to meet women and drink and lark about like an idiot. We were somewhat surprised but relieved when he told us he'd decided he wanted to be a Peacekeeper. He couldn't tell me much of why he'd chosen that profession, but I think he knew that being a businessman, or worse a fisherman like most people in this place, was not for him at all. Well, now he’s a peacekeeper he won’t be able to rely on our family wealth and connections to get by. His mother will miss him, of course, and his two brothers are quite upset at his going, but I really think it is for the best. I couldn’t stand to see my other sons have their future’s ruined by Marlin bringing shame upon the family in District 4. We’re very well known and influential here, you know.” Mr Armani, Marlin’s Father.
