Worthlessness is a horrible feeling especially when it comes to my family, yet for some reason it changed slightly when Septys volunteered for the games just last year. But it's still there racing through my mind. Every single inch covering through my body as I try to become a man in the world. Today is different. It's been exactly one year since Septys volunteered in the place of Mohs. But it doesn't make me angry or sad. No, it's concerning. Yet he's not who I placed high on a pedestal for the rest of the world to see. Quadrys. A high and mighty tower. A king with a crown on his head. My entire life I've placed him far above myself even when he tossed me down, but here I am still following him around like a newborn duck wading in his shadows hoping he shows me the way. Which is why when he volunteers for the games my world comes crashing down, but perhaps it's a chance to escape. Quadrys is a king, and I am an unworthy peasant when it comes to standing before him, but right now I will not bow down. I will not let this turn me into something I'm not because he knows what he's doing. He's planned it for years, and I'm terrified to see it play out on the screen at home. He's not even gone yet, but a part of me misses him already because soon he'll be swept away from this place we grew up. Perhaps he can return home alive. Septys was so close, and I feel Quadrys can go even further. Third place isn't even an honor because the end result is the same as the other twenty-three who died. One step after another I head towards the justice building keeping my emotions in check. My heart races inside my chest bounding against the wall of bones. Loud, violent roars ring through my ears, but not once do I look back. I don't know who else is going into the arena with him, however, I know he can win. Quadrys will return home either alive or dead; my hope he returns home a victor with the crown on top his head to prove he powerful he truly is. I have little interaction with the peacekeepers as they tell me the time limit I have. It doesn't mean anything, but right now time isn't on my side. Turning the doorknob to the room, I allow myself to step foot inside. My gaze drops to the floor, and I'm lost on words to say. Quadrys wouldn't want pity. He wouldn't want me to shed a tear. He'd want me to cheer him on. To encourage him he can do well, yet my mind is telling me to say something different. I guess I start with the easiest part of it all, and that's just starting the conversation. Inhaling sharply, I spew a simple sentence into reality. "Quadrys, hello."

[attr="class","congrats"] Quadrys Lexig H E I R  T O  T H E  L E X I G  T H R O N E Today is the day that I realised that I could be loved- "He wasn't our son; he belonged to everyone." I could hear his footsteps before I saw him, but I kept myself rigid on the chair in which I still sat. For years, this boy had been under my command- virtually left to my devices- yet here he still stood, with the nerve to even come say goodbye to me as I left to become something greater. I had been told before that I had the ego of a king and now was truly the time to decide if I were to ever actually become one.   He seems to shy away from my sight whenever he fully enters and I can see his eyes drift to the floor; he hesitates and I can feel the air grow tense with every inhale we take in and every exhale we exhaust out. I wait, patiently, for Pentys Lexig to say something- to use that mouth that he had run so many times before in his life- but whenever I am met by the soft vibrations of his vocal cords, it seems almost haunting that all he says is "Quadrys, hello."  I stand. He's inches shorter than me, our age difference of roughly three years playing a part in this arrogance I've held over him, but this time he doesn't seem to take this dominance with open arms. Rather, he seems to oppose it, and I nod in acceptance to this non-verbal and possibly unintentional gesture.  "Pentys." I say only his name in fear of losing the person he knows me to be. The youngest of what is to become a legacy, but what is a legacy? Planting seeds in a garden that you will never get to see? I'm sure he'll find out soon enough, but I fear that I won't get to attend to my actions with my own mind, and my own fears, and my own existence. As if out of habit, I wrap my fist in the fabric of my joggers and swallow hard before continuing. "This isn't going to be like last games, okay?" I take a deep breath and beg for his eye contact- a last resort to prove that these words are authentic. "I'm not going to leave you two like.. like he did. I'm going to come back." With a smirk, I shift my weight from foot to foot and walk over to the window, where I can still see a trickle of children leaving the reaping outside. Quietly, I turn back to him- I can't quite tell if he's moved- and stand a little straighter.  "So don't worry. I'll be a real king by then, you'll see. This is what I've prepared for, after all- what I was made for- and I'm not throwing away my shot so easily." I allow him time to comprehend this and hope that he understands wholefully what this means. I won't be dead the next time he sees me- no- and I'll be more than just the king, in truth. Hell, I'll be the whole damn monarchy if I want to.  And not a single person of the other 23 can take that precedent away from me.

Because everybody dies.

Power radiates from his body the moment he stands from his chair. All my life he's been a powerful being. One I've looked up to. One that I would do anything for. Maybe his strings have attached to me controlling me as he turned me into a being to follow his footsteps, but in this moment none of it matters. It shouldn't surprise me that he volunteered for a chance in the games to show the world how powerful the Lexig name is. Last year in the finale, Septys had a chance to show it. He had a chance to hold the power in his hands, but at the last second he failed. Quadrys reassures me that a repeat won't happen. Deep inside I believe him like I've believed his many lies before, but I fully feel trustworthy knowing his word is exactly what it means. Time after time I watched him plan his game. I've witnessed him talking about it over and over as he walked through every single detail planned. Some of it was sadistic, but a part of me deep inside enjoyed hearing about it. I may only be a child of thirteen years of age, however, that was long left me behind. A bit of anger reaches inside me thinking of Septys and how he left us. The moment he ran forward volunteering he left us behind. Trapped in a world of the unknown, but Septys isn't the king. He wasn't the one worthy of wearing the crown, and it was proven the moment a non career struck him down. Quadrys is the king. The one who deserves the chance to hold the highest honor among anyone else in the world, and I know, without a doubt, he's going to do everything he can to return home alive. He has the capability of killing every single person in the arena. He can devour them one by one until nobody but himself remains. But one thing for sure, becoming cocky can kill a career in a heartbeat because I have seen it many times before. "You are a king already, Quadrys." I say with a nod of my head knowing nothing will stop him from climbing higher and higher on the pedestal created by those following him around. "And I know you will win. You are more than capable. Stronger than everyone else, and I know good and well, that this won't be the last time I talk to you." But the hope of him returning comes with a moment of distrust and hopelessness. I had thought Septys would return home alive, but even he, the dragon warrior, wasn't capable of defeating the odds.

Pentys has faith in me; he tells me what I already know.  That I'm going to be successful.  That I'm going to be the victor of the 72nd Hunger Games. But what happens when I die in the bloodbath? What happens when I can't keep those promises that I've set in stone with the hug of 'not yet' and the kiss of 'I'll be back'? The two youngest of this legacy will be left without the footsteps of victory to lead them, and if they turn out to be anything like the I was during the time shortly after Septys' death, there is nothing I can do aside from come back with the crown on my head and 23 other deaths still lingering on my fingertips.  "Good." My voice is quiet, but still firm despite the conflict that is playing out within my head. I am a career- I was built to handle this since the moment that I was conceived. So why is it so difficult now to accept the risks that come with such glory?  "Keep believing that, okay?" I shuffle my hands onto my hips and make my way back to him, holding out my arms for one of the only embraces I've ever offered this boy in the years that I've known him.  I've known him his entire life.  But I never could have imagined that it was possible to lose him so easily. In my head, winning was a piece of cake; get in, kill the others, get out. Simple line of events, as predictable as any scenario could ever get. But the 71st awakened me to the harsh reality that even the most elite could get what they deserved, whether it be death, or the warm comfort of liberty. It is not stacked in their favour due to their heritage, but more the opposite.  The eldest Lexig was crushed under the shine of a girl from 7 and the life of the boy from double ones. Not that I could blame him. It's not like he was the one that cut my brother in the stomach and left him to slowly bleed out.  I decide in that moment that this victory is less of a desire and more of a necessity.

Because everybody dies.
