This is the muttation list for the 73rd Hunger Games. Congrats to Onyx and Pogue for winning the muttation contest! There were a lot of good entries this year, giving you guys a theme definitely brings out the ingenuity.
Reflectors - (Throughout)
The reflectors were often used for mental torture during the war. A combination of monkeys, chameleons, and mockingbirds, these creatures are disturbingly similar to miniature humans with skin they can change at will. When presented with the right information, a Reflector can mimic their victim’s voice to say horrible things or - worse- things they’ve already said. Though their physical fighting abilities are moderate at best, Reflectors are able to get into the minds of their subjects by reminding them of every awful act they’ve ever committed. For these particular Games, the Reflectors have been altered so that their skin color will change depending on which of the seven deadly sins they are representing.

Gorgon - (Dead Lake, Pit of Darkness)
Natives to the dark, underground sewers throughout the time of the Dark Days, The Capitol conducted test runs and experiments to create a new breed that would hinder one’s true fears, putting them to the test. Skulking around, the Gorgon slithers at excessive speeds towards its prey, allowing no chance for it to flee from the Gorgons grip. Though blind in the silver, glossy eyes the Gorgon is the end result of an anaconda, mixed with the DNA of a cobra. Thus, giving this breed a kings hood attached to their heads in which radiating heat and movement are sensed at even the smallest rates. Made to change and adapt to whichever climate they may be placed in, as well as darker and brighter areas, these scaly reptilian creatures know how to blend well with their surroundings. Able to temporary calcify its prey with a look, they strike after the unfortunate victim has been turned to stone.
40 HP. Non Edible. Festering Wounds. Special Dice Roll.
Graeae - (Dead Lake)(credit to Pogue)
It finds itself deep rooted in the legends of a civilization long since dead. No one really knows where it came from, or what its true purpose was. It has the body of a swan, feathers sharpened into spikes, ruffling along its body. The regal elegance stops at the neck, however, as its neck splits into three different heads, all ending with the head of an eel, with a jaw full of sharpened fangs. Initial reports showed that the creature was extremely aggressive, shooting its feathers at bystanders or snapping out with one of its heads. However, upon closer examination of the mutt, it was revealed that the results of this bizarre mutation wasn't without flaws; the musculature allows only one eye to be opened on any head at one time. This limits its field of vision, but creates an unbridled aggressiveness from which is it difficult to escape unscathed.

Charon - (Throughout) (credit to Pogue)
The uniqueness of this mutt comes from the fact that it was created by rebels, not Capitol scientists. They sit medium sized, the body of a slow loris with a dark grey color scheme. Their use comes from their long and thick tails, ending in a small structure resembling a glass lantern, containing a bio-luminescent bulb that lights up even the darkest of nights. They were created to guide rebels along night paths without using fire or tar to do so. Incredibly enthralled by metal objects, Rebels were able to buy the mutts loyalties with things as simple as a fork or knife. However, it was soon discovered that their curiosity often lead them off the beaten trails and into more...disastrous areas. When too many groups of rebels were accidentally lead into sand pits or off of cliffs, the mutts were retired. However, they've found their use inside the 73rd Arena.
10 HP. Non Edible. Tributes can pay a gold coin to roll a dice. If successful, they will gain Charon's light for a single fight.
Cerberus - (Pit of Darkness, Howling Winds)
Although Hellhounds still wreak havoc, they do nothing in comparison to the great beast that is Cerberus. The Gamemakers though the Hellhounds were too common and needed to be vamped up. Thus the Cerberus was born. Twice the size of a normal Hellhound and with three vicious heads, this beast roams the land not looking for easy prey but large groups to tear apart. And with three heads, the dog can attack three times during the time it takes one Tribute to attack. Cerberus certainly is a force to be reckoned with. (62nd)
30 HP. Non Edible.
Midust Mites - (Pool of Molten Gold) (credit to Onyx)
From afar, Midust Mites look like a single shimmering cloud of gold, swirling and undulating like a school of fish or flock of starlings. However, once you get up close, it's clear to see that the cloud is really comprised of thousands of microscopic bugs with beautiful golden wings and heads, orbiting a glowing golden Queen in perfect uniform movement. Initially, the Midust Mites were designed to be decorative - released at the beginning of an event or party, Midust Mites can give any room a regal feel, reflecting the lights in gold flickers. However, after one banquet that went disastrously wrong, the Midust Mites were relinquished to storage: the thousands of beating wings created mass hallucinations of what the guests were longing for and swarmed while they were distracted. In mere minutes, dozens of people choked to death on the golden cloud. The Queen herself, who acts as a beacon for the worker mites, was reported by several guests to have dealt out bites, drinking their blood until her golden head was tinted a rosy hue. Finally, in an arena with a bubbling pool of molten gold, the Midust Mites were ready to be used again with a malicious purpose. Whether tributes think they're hallucinating the glowing gold haze due to some kind of gold-blindness, or whether they're simply drawn to that yellow hue because of its beauty, the Midust Mites are deviously simple - draw them in with what they desire, and descend upon them while they attempt to grasp it.
15HP. Non Edible.
Succubus - (Lonely Caves, Dead Lake, Howling Winds)
What are your deepest desires? In an attempt to better delve into the minds of rebels and uprisers, the Capitol worked for years in the deepest parts of their laboratory to create the Succubus. It was many generations before they bred a chimpanzee/gorilla hybrid with posture that could be mistaken for a human’s, but they were still unable to recreate a face and body seductive enough for their purposes. Instead, they grafted mechanical implants into key locations which project a holograph over the muttation’s body which mimics the greatest desire of the tribute. What each victim sees is personalized, but the response isn’t - close enough to strike, they go in for the kill with bared teeth and hands strong enough to snap a spine like a wet branch.
30 HP. Non Edible.
Hellhounds - (Pit of Flames, Pool of Molten Gold, Lonely Caves)
Though they’re called hounds, these nasty little creations aren’t just canine. They were created for one purpose- to shred- and the jaws are all alligator, with sharp teeth and the muscles to slam their jaws closed on a piece of prey and toss it around until enough pieces fly off to kill it. The name did come from somewhere, though, and the majority of this mutt is in fact canine in origin. The creature looks like a monstrous wolf-strong fighter, enduring runner, and so dark an earthly green as to appear black. Just to add to the disturbing color factors, the eyes are more veins than sclera, turning them red. (That, like the green tinge to their fur, was actually a defect caused by trying to use such specialized alligator cells; it was originally going to be bred out, but enticed such fear in the Hounds’ prey that it quickly came to be regarded as useful.) The ears are long at birth and need to be cropped to keep from flopping dangerously close to the teeth; that trait is from the bloodhound genetics that allow the Hounds to track their prey even when it seems impossible to do so. (58th)
25 HP. Non Edible.
Hellcats - ( Pit of Flames, Pool of Molten Gold, Lonely Caves )
Though the name “Hellcat” was an attempt by the creating scientists to pull from the wild popularity of their canine counterparts, this feline certainly does look like a beast straight out of Hell. With DNA borrowed from tigers, lions, and the extinct saber-toothed cats, this feline has a luxurious orange coat with black-maned males. Bred for aesthetic reasons as well as for their agility that their hound counterparts lack, Hellcats have eyes that span from amber to flame in color, ringed by a dark circle of black, as well as eight-inch fangs that protrude from their mouths at all times. These cats are excellent climbers and battle strategists; additionally, they have a great sense of smell, though not to the degree of the hound version. (60th)
25 HP. Non Edible.
Lochs - ( Pool of Boiling Blood )
With long, snake-like bodies, thousands of small legs, and shimmering silver scales, Lochs spend most of their time in the depths of the Pool of Boiling Blood. Every few minutes they surface for air, the blood sliding off their slick backs enough for a flash of silver to be seen before they quickly disappear again. On occasion they can be found on dry land, resembling enormous silver centipedes. Fast and easily angered, these creatures have razor sharp teeth that could cut through bone if a tribute gets close enough, though they prefer to fight with their many arms.
35 HP. Non Edible. Festering Wounds.
Cave Spiders - ( Throughout )
Originally designed to seek out rebels hiding in caves or underground holes, Cave Spiders are about the size of a small cat and difficult to spot in the dark. It’s probably for the best - their size accentuates every gruesome detail of their appearance, from their many glittering eyes to bodies that look as if they’ve been carved from stone. Because they were mostly used for observation during the war, Cave Spiders aren’t particularly good at defending themselves, though once provoked they have the ability to do a decent amount of damage.
5 HP. Non Edible.
Harpies - ( Throughout )
The Capitol really outdid itself with this muttation. With the naked upper torso of a gorilla affixed to the legs and wings of a bird, this beast can be quite elegant. The Harpies were originally developed to be companions for older Capitol men. It took a few deaths before the muttation engineers realized that the Harpies were better off contained to an arena. There is a certain femininity to a Harpy’s movements, a sly batting of her eyelashes just before she attacks, a proud fluttering of her wings before she swoops in on her prey. But don't be fooled; this is one twitchy, screechy critter who loves to use her knife-like talons to scratch up her prey before she eats his innards. (62nd)
15 HP. +5 HP against male tributes. Non Edible.
Bloodfeaster - ( Dead Lake )
Using the DNA of a common house cat, a vampire bat and a leech these compact creatures were affectionately nicknamed ‘ankle biters’. They retained the slimy, black skin of a leech as well as its ability to breathe underwater. Bred specifically for damp, swampy areas these cuddly creatures lack the ability to eat or digest anything other than the blood of humans or large game. Their mouths resemble large, gaping holes filled with rows of sharp white canines used to latch onto skin. Their saliva is not exactly a toxin but is rich with blood-thinning chemicals and bacteria- infecting said tribute with festering wounds. (72nd)
15 HP. Non Edible. Festering Wounds.
Kodama - (Everywhere)
If one did not know better, they would think the Kodoma a ghost. The creature moves in absolute silence, with a body that looks somewhat similar to a human's in that it stands upright and have two arms and two legs. The similarities stop there, though, for this particular mutt has a wide, round abdomen, no fingers or toes, and an oval head with two dark eyes and an equally dark mouth, so that the three features can barely be distinguished from each other. The rest of its body is opalescent, smooth, and free of even the slightest feature, and it's tiny, maybe a foot and a half tall at most. The Kodama are generally a puzzling creature. Unlike most mutts, they were created to cheer up people in the Capitol who were old, sick, or depressed, meant to be a kind of therapy. Their behavior didn't exactly go as planned, though - the creatures would often just stand there, making an occasional call that sounded high pitched and distant. They amused patients, however, and were therefor kept. In the Arena, they have been known to be actually helpful. They travel in packs and often do little more than watch tributes with their wide eyes and bring them food. Still, their presence has been known to be greatly calming to many, even the unlucky teenagers slated for almost certain death.
Bone Dragons - (Pit of Darkness, Pit of Flames, Pool of Molten Gold)
With the success of Flemeth’s reinvention, the same was done to her “children”. They deactivated the miniature mechanical models they had created in the years after her death and took them apart, adhering their structure to a base skeleton from various species of lizard. Though not nearly as fearsome as their predecessor, they often come in groups, and the scratch of their little talons rend deeper than anyone would expect. Though their circuitry is not as complex as Flemeth’s, there remains an odd anomaly - no matter how many different ways they try and code their behaviour, they always seem to pick up on the movements and mannerisms of the mother they have never once seen.
15HP. Non Edible.
Flemeth - ( ? )
Many years ago, the minds behind the Hunger Games attempted their most ambitious project yet. Though largely unsuccessful, the data gathered from their deployment of Muttation X-208, codename Flemeth, would prove invaluable. Since this initial trial, they have refined their specimen, and the result is an abomination of organic and synthetic - the harvested skeleton of the original dragon, now built with metal instead of muscle and and oil instead of oxygen, discards the flesh that made her weak in the first place. Through the gaps in her ribs one can see the churn of her pistoned heart, a brilliant blue, that swells like a bellows and spews cobalt flame from her open maw. Tatters of flesh hang from her bleached bones, remnants of her onyx scales, the nanobots that skitter through her new arteries building and chewing up new matter as she needs it. Despite nothing of her previous mind remaining, now a mess of copper and circuitry, there is an unsettling intelligence that burns in the deep-set sockets of her skull.
