Asari Rhodes
17
Female
District eleven
Appearance:
Compared to her brothers, Asari is on the short side. Standing roughly five foot three, she's nothing but an ant in the present of a giant, and her weight is nothing to brag about either. Weighing 90 pounds, she uses her weight to her advantage. She has very little muscle, and her cheeks are sunken in. Bags circle her blue eyes, and red stains the white of her eyes from the lack of sleep and tears. Her ribs are noticeable beneath her baggy clothing. And despite being out in the sun a lot, Asari is very pale. She has two skin colors: pale as a ghost, or as red as a red apple growing in the orchards. Someone once asked her why she still looks the way she does now that Harbinger won the games, but she couldn't answer the question. It's been her life for so long, she doesn't want to change. Asari has curly brown hair falling to the middle of her back. Most of the time she keeps it up and braided because it makes her hot.
Her voice is quiet unless she's angry, then it's loud. But her words slur together a lot. Sometimes it's hard to understand what she's saying, and it upsets her when people keep asking her to repeat herself. Pale lips rarely turn into a smile because she wants to protect her yellow teeth and stinky breath. At least she bathes more now eliminating the horrible body odor. The last thing she wants is someone making fun of her. Walking isn't easy for her. Very unsteady gait causes her to topple over many times. Many broken bones, and constant numbness in her legs cursed her life. Broken bones never healed properly leaving her legs crooked. Many times it's like her legs just fall asleep while she's walking causing her to fall. Asari uses a makeshift cane to keep herself steady. Her life ambition is to climb trees, but she can't because her legs refuse to cooperate. But she never gives up. She keeps trying.
Personality:
Sweet, shy, friendly, polite. Those are just a few words used when describing Asari. She's always putting people before herself because their needs are more than her's. Always opening doors and holding them for people, yet she refuses to make eye contact with anyone. Her eyes remain fixed on the floor when someone stands in front of her talking despite the terrible feelings of it being rude - it is rude, but she can't help it. Once she gets to know someone, she talks to them. She may not make eye contact with them, but she'll hold a conversation. She doesn't have many friends, but the few friends she has, Asari holds close because she's opened the door letting them inside.
She's always looking for opportunity, and even when people are speaking, and it seems she's not paying attention, Asari is retaining the information in her mind. She can throw out questions constantly trying to learn more. Sometimes her cousins have mistaken her for being a very foolish person. Asari lives by one rule, don't let the quiet ones fool you. On top of it all, she's easily distracted, yet her very curious mind comes into play as she wanders through the district trying to take everything in. In the middle of a sentence, her mind floats away from the current events often times bringing up something totally random. When she's paying attention, Asari can be very honest and blunt at times. Many times she warns people not to ask her questions unless they're willing to accept the honest answer. Sometimes Asari gets herself into situations with no easy way out. Her honesty becomes too much, or she'll bend the rules for her favor.
But don't let a smile fool you. Asari is good at hiding her emotions. Before Crusader died, she would allow everyone to know how she felt, yet it all changed. She got tired of people asking her if she was alright. She got tired of crying in front of people. So she put a mask on to hide the sorrow lingering inside her. Now she smiles through the pain because she believes that one day smiling will make her actually feel fine again. Harbinger winning the games brought back the hope she had lost. It brought back what she thought she had lost. But it all flew away in the blink of an eye when Weaver was reaped for the games. It leaves her wondering why she's been safe and nobody else has. What has she done differently? Yet it doesn't matter because the moment she finds hope again, Asari knows the Capitol will snatch it away. Freedom and hope isn't free - it comes with a price.
History:
When Asari was younger, she spent most of her life climbing trees and getting in trouble in school. Her favorite part of the year was the harvest because she climbed to the tops of the orchards to gather the fruit people older than her couldn't get. She loved running around with her brothers. Getting dirty never bothered her any because it meant she played well and had a lot of fun. But one day it all changed when she fell from a tree injuring herself. She tried to climb the trees, and it shattered her when she couldn't. Asari set from the sidelines watching as her friends continued doing what she loved. Soon she found a new hobby, and she found someone that she crushed on from a distance. He's a few years older than she is, but it didn't bother her any.
She would sneak away from the house constantly because she wanted to follow in his footsteps. Gathering plants for meals. She loved cooking. She loved making new soups for her family and friends to try out. But it wasn't easy following the gentleman around. Her steps were heavy, and she couldn't keep up with him, and it discouraged her until Weaver created a makeshift cane for her. It was always enough to keep her standing. Enough to keep her from falling over. From a distance she watched as he picked the plants, and she'd sneak behind him as he walked away and gather the same plant. And when she got home, she'd mash it into a soup for dinner. But most of the time it was barely enough. It never filled her stomach up, and many nights, she went to sleep with her stomach begging for more. It was the normal. It was all she knew.
Despite having trouble walking, she managed to creep through the district stalking the same guy every single day. She watched as he worked in the fields. She watched his every movement, but it all changed when Crusader was reaped for the games. She locked herself away indoors refusing to leave the tiny projector in the house. When he died, she didn't want to leave the house, but every morning she forced herself to stand. She forced herself to go outdoors and gather plants. But she stopped following him around. She didn't want to find love. She didn't care. She stopped caring about him. And it wasn't until Kirito was reaped for the games, she realized he still existed, and it wasn't Kirito she was falling for. No, it was his twin brother. Now she was forced to see him a lot, forced to talk to him, and the spark that was once kindled was burning inside her again.
When Harbinger won the following games, her life took a turn for the better. Everything started falling into place. She was given enough food to fill her stomach at night. She stopped going to sleep hungry. She thought her life wasn't a mess anymore. But it was obvious the Capitol had it out for them. She remembered when the two tiny tributes, Carrita and Iain were reaped for the seventy-second games, and if that wasn't enough Weaver was reaped for the next games. And now she's left wondering who'll be reaped next.
