May Gabrielle Evans (Gaby for family and close friends, May for everyone else)
Age: 12 years old
Gender: female
District/Area: District 9
Appearance:
She's not really a short girl, but most people step on her feet and bump into her without even noticing that. Her hair is light brown, like her mother's and her skin is pale. She's got a big mouth and a small round nose. Her eyes are large and deep blue, with a slight shade of grey in them. The eyelashes are black and very long.
She can't be called pretty, but she's not likely to be considered ugly, either. She's rather skinny, has thin arms, legs...everything looks so fragile, like she can break into pieces at any moment. Her elbows and knees are big and stick out of her bony skeleton.
Personality:
Gaby is so used to being unnoticed, that she usually takes zero attention for granted. She's not really shy, though. And definitely not a quiet child. She might behave herself at school, but she had always been a very loud person at home. Her cousin taught her to hunt and she loves spending hours in the forest, trying to get herself something for dinner or just watching nature and all the living things around, trying to memorize the plants she finds. That makes her an expert on all kinds of survival methods and medical treatment. She is great at hiding and shooting, but fighting definitely isn't her cup of tea.
She loves running, jumping, dancing and singing, because it helps her forget everything that makes her cry. She thinks crying is a weakness, but can't help it at times. Crying is a huge part of her personality. It starts every time something unfair or tragical happens. Holding it in is impossible, so she just tries to find a place, where no one can see it.
Another part of her are nightmares. They begin at about 10 p.m. every night and end at 3 a.m. next morning. Sometimes she can't even remember them, but they always make her frown and she never gets to sleep well. The ones she can remember are about her family and the Hunger Games. The horrifying dreams live inside her mind, they seem to be stuck in the little head for an eternity.
History:
She's sitting under a bush in the forest, looking thoughtfully at a small dandelion in the grass. This flower looks just like the one her cousin gave her on the first day he took her outside the fence. This life seemed so different from life in the district itself... Nobody was watching her for the first time in the whole seven years of her life. The forest lived by itself, without anyone telling it what to do, blooming, singing, shining. No cameras, no peacekeepers. Learning to hunt and tell different plants apart took her a plenty of time and effort, however, she nailed it eventually...
Sun disappears behind a small cloud. Gaby looks at the sky and sighs. It all could be perfect, no matter how much they ate and worked. She would never question the authority of the Capitol or complain about anything, but the dark days came. She doesn't remember much about that year, except for her brother's name being picked in the Reaping and his body falling on the ground with a huge blade in his chest. She can also recall her mother's cry and her cousin's body being brought back to the district. He was all covered in blood and had a strange, terrified expression on his white face, which she kept seeing in her nightmares from that moment on.
Her father died in a year. She doesn't know, how it happened, it just did. She was eight then and she can't quite remember, why he died. He was sick and then he was gone. Gaby had to go behind the fence every week and hunt illegally to help her mother, but it wasn't enough. Mom was pregnant and still had to work to feed her daughter and her father. Gaby can still picture her gray, exhausted face. She died after giving birth to her third child, Cynthia. The baby didn't even last two months.
Everyone died. It sounds so strange. Only two weeks ago she had a grandfather left and today he's dead, too. Can she be next? That's too horrifying to think about. She will just go to school day after day, hunt in the forest and see, what happens. Gaby stands up and starts walking towards the fence. She doesn't meet any peacekeepers on her way and gets home quickly.
Home... A small, dirty cottage on the edge of the district. It's always hard to live here, because there's never enough wood to make a fire and the roof is so old, that water flows into the living room while it rains. But it's not that bad. She can live with that. Maybe it was all just a bad dream, maybe she'll wake up tomorrow... Maybe not. But she's still alive. And that's the main thing she has to care about. Be alive. No matter what, she will give anything to survive and she will succeed. That's the whole point of this life, isn't it? Live here, now, and today, until tomorrow begins, and then start over.
