[Day 2] Field: Shot Put

SHOT PUT

Welcome to the Shot Put event of the second Panem Olympic Games! The track and field complex is located within the Olympic Arena, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you stretch and warm up with your coaches before you're called to the backstop, and remember, make your district proud!

The execution of this event is simple. Feel free to roleplay your character setting up for their throws, and then paste the code [*roll=375+1650] without the asterisks into your post THREE TIMES and roll, as you would with a Hunger Games die. This will result in a four-digit number that will correspond to a distance, which is read with a decimal point separating the first two and the last two digits (e.g. 1905 is read as 19.05 meters) Each participant will be measured by their best throw only, not their average distance or the sum of their throws.

The competitor with the furthest distance wins this event. Distances for this event will be continually updated on this thread; however, the overall decathlon standings will be updated on a separate thread.

After you have rolled, feel free to edit your post with your character's reaction to each throw if you so desire, but please keep it to one post rather than multiple.

There is NO POSTING ORDER; you may post your throws whenever you please. Keep in mind that this event must be wrapped up by the end of the Olympics Day.

The sun burns high in the sky. Midday—empty skies, nothing but oceans of bright blue. No stars fill the space, and the darkness has been sent away, for now, but will be summoned by the setting of the sun by the evening.

And then, the fallen Fray come out.

It's a shame that the whole tree can't watch us compete. If only the darkness was permanent, perhaps then I'd feel a sense of strength which would spur me on: to work harder, to embody what it means to succeed.

Success is only defined by a podium placing in this universe, though I see the definition as something flexible. Being here has broken all sorts of boundaries, being a contestant and breathing air of a new place is what success really is—success is simply, living.

People don't see that, and sometimes, that is the saddest thing.

A solemn smile is smeared onto my face as I raise a hand to my brow to gaze at the sun. Darkness—it's always there, invisible but always there. Especially when it's bound to your name; Peggy Fray is all it takes to remind me.

They call my name and I am ushered towards a circle in the field. Crooked fingers crawl through my hair to tighten my ponytail, and I pray that this goes better than the discus throw yesterday.

Panem's Third Olympic Games

    Sweat slips gently down the sides of Eva's skin. Her breaths stagger slightly while her arms skim through the salty air. A soft sea breeze filters through the massive stadium bringing a touch of relief from the sweltering sun. Every where else across the trapped nation fall was sneaking into existence. Here in Four, this was fall, a few breezes to stop the pain from a still sheer summer sun. 

    Much of Eva found it hard to believe that so many years had already passed since she last competed in the Olympics. The memories of happiness still clung like soaked silk to her mind. All those years ago she had over come the shackles of her sorrow. Over come the brutal beating of her disability and rose out of the shadows of her sea. She had beaten the best of careers and proven that brittle bones don't always have to break. 

    Now a new year had dawned upon her with new opportunities laced within these games. Once more the eyes of everyone fell upon her and the rest of the competitors. Except this time they knew her name and they knew her story. She wouldn't be the dark horse within each race, she was a medalist hoping to redeem her titles along with claiming more. Or so Mr. Flickerman had claimed her to be in the broadcast she had seen just an hour earlier. 

    In truth, as Eva stood for the first time in the light of the Shot Put event she forgot what she had already achieved. She forgot the happiness she felt and the success her family claimed she had. She was back to the blocks of her first swim all those years ago. Back to a girl defined by her brittle bones and tender personality. Now, just like then, she would prove that she had nothing to lose and everything to gain.

You turned away when I looked you in the eye,
And hesitated when I asked if you were alright,
Seems like you're fighting for you life,

Training isn't a favorite of mine, yet sometimes I find myself wandering through the halls of the facility trying to pretend to care. The idea of hurting someone never once crossed my mind because I care too much to injure someone. All I want to do is save them. Now that I'm standing in the Olympic stadium, I feel training may have paid off because this is a show, and I have so much to prove. I want my parents to understand and realize that I can do whatever I want without training. That healing is my life. That I'm not worthless.

The shot put is heavy in my sweaty palms, and I don't know how I'm going to manage to throw it because I swear it's going to slide off my hands and drop at my feet. I just hope I don't make a fool of myself.

Each breath catches in the back of my throat. Muffled sounds echo through my ears. What happens now? Chance. It's a way to make a new name for myself in district one. It's way to show Renegade that I am stronger than she's ever given me credit for.

But I know it's never going to be enough.

A heavy sigh leaves my chest as I take my place trying to remember how to hold the heavy ball in my hands. Every hair stands on end, all my muscles convulse, my eyes are wide. My heart claws at my ribs trying to break free -

I have to find a calm.

Closing my eyes for just a moment, I take the largest breath I can inhale, and as the air expels past my lips, I begin my performance, and I hope it's one I'll never forget.

Torka Hammerfell

How hard can it be? All I have to do is lift a heavy, metal ball, and throw it as far as I can. It seems easy enough. If these scrawny people can do it, I know that I can. I lost in the discus throw, and I won't lose here. A medal is mine. It's calling my name. All I have to do is perform well. I'm the only one worthy of wearing the gold medal. Nobody else is. And I will prove to them that the Hammerfell family, well maybe not even the family, but I, Torka Hammerfell, am the only one deserving of the honor. So I stand there watching and taking in every single one of the motions. Studying is a key part of becoming a victor, and in this moment it's my time to shine. My lips twist into a cocky grin as I take my place. And when it's time, I throw hoping nothing bad happens.

I thought the Shot Put was an interesting concept. One takes a heavy, spherical object and throws it as far as they can. Perhaps the fact that it seemed so out of the ordinary was the reason I had decided to participate in the event. As I watched other people throw, some of them did rather well, and others didn't. I waited for my name to be called, and hoped that today's event would turn out better than the discus throw had for me.

I took my place and heaved the heavy object, watching where it landed.
