Welcome to heartbreak.
It comes in the form of a young, slim girl by the name of Estelle. She is fair skinned, but pales quickly during the winter months so that when the summer comes around she barely manages to gain any kind of tan before the weather turns again. When she does have colour to her skin she almost glows softly, the way a pregnant mother might. In fact, there were a number of times when her mother has questioned her about whether she actually was pregnant or not. After repeated denials and months of not showing any signs her mother would finally settle again.
Estelle is rather tall for her age, taking after the Shim side of her family. The Ruineds have influenced her figure and left her slight, despite her height. She's of a healthy weight, or as healthy as anyone can be in District five, and does not want for food, yet her figure is naturally thin.
Beneath her skin, always seeming thin and fragile as her bones, lay dark veins. They are not large, but they are still quite visible underneath her ever-pale skin. Brown eyes look from under similarly coloured fringed bangs. The rich contrast of her eyes and hair is almost startling, and yet it may be the only thing that gives her a warm appearance - otherwise she would look as cold on the outside as she felt in her core.
A spiderweb of cracks appear in her porcelain skin as she stares at herself in the mirror. Tugging on her hair to try and cover them, she hides her face from herself. No one else sees the fractures that coat her form, yet they're there. Pulled taught between two constantly mourning families had left her brittle and breaking.
Beneath the cracks sits a red china heart, wishing to be strong but knowing it wouldn't take much to break.
She breathes in the air, wishing each breath might layer her bones with power and security but silently terrified that they would snap under the pressure. Images of her ribs splintering and spraying her insides with innumerable tiny needles of bone are brushed away with a vigorous swipe at the bangs that had fallen into her face. She can't be as fragile as she looks, else she wouldn't last another day.
In fact, each day she survives in a surprise to her. She doesn't want to die, doesn't want to collapse in a pile of broken limbs and bleeding heart, and yet there's always this looming sense of the end that clutches at her frail shoulders. Perhaps living in a family stuck between two pools of loss and sorrow leads to the expectation of the inevitable. For Estelle, that inevitable is her own death.
Her parents were both withdrawn from and supportive of her extended family. As a small unit, her mother, father, and herself tried to weather the storm of despair that swept through both sides of her family as Games after Games cousins were plucked from the District to die at the hands of other such unlucky children.
By separating themselves from their relatives, they thought they might be able to lessen the hurt that seemed to follow both family names. Unfortunately, this was not true. Still battered by the emotional destruction leeching through the roots of their family tree, they mourned alongside the rest of their loved ones.
Her parents always tried to shelter her from the pain, but there was nothing they could do to stop the murmurs at school or the looks as they walked down the street. Everyone knew that this was a family whose last name meant loss, and they all pitied them for it.
