[Day 4] High Jump

HIGH JUMP

Welcome to the high jump event of the third Panem Olympic Games! The track and field complex is located within the Olympic Arena, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you stretch and warm up with your coaches before you're called to the starting block, and remember, make your district proud!

The execution of this event is somewhat more difficult than the other events. Feel free to roleplay your character making their jumps, warming up, etc as you would normally. However, instead of pasting a single code in once, you will be pasting different codes in for success/failure at different heights. You will have three chances to clear each height.


Everyone clears the 1.50m jump automatically. You get three tries to clear each following jump, with the odds getting worse for success each time. You will need to edit your post each time for multiple jumps / to add the next jump. BE SURE TO LABEL YOUR JUMPS. Here are the odds:

The competitor with the highest successful jump wins this event. Heights for this event will be continually updated on this thread; however, the overall decathlon standings will be updated on a separate thread.

After everyone has rolled, feel free to edit your post with your character's reaction if you so desire, but please keep it to one post rather than multiple.

There is NO POSTING ORDER; you may post whenever you please. Keep in mind that this event must be wrapped up by the end of the Olympics Day.

Ronnie Cheyne

A silver in the long jump…and now a gold in the 400m! As soon as he was able too, celebrations erupted in his house when returned home although the rest of his family didn’t seem to be in the celebrative mood, Ronnie still cracked open the bottles for himself, having an independent party. He was astounded by the fact that he couldn’t persuade his own twin to have a complementary drink on his behalf. Flinging himself into bed on the eve of his next event, he was really unaware of the high jump that he had unwittingly signed himself up for. Only when his brother dragged him out of bed did he find out that he had to show his face again at the Olympic park. Wandering to the venue with his heavy head in his hand, Ronnie questioned just how many events he had put his name down for.

His journey to the Olympic park was like every day, all the foreigners and locals calling out his name, begging for some kind of acknowledgment. Ever since Hettie’s name was pulled from that glass bowl, he has been getting this relentlessly every day. Ever since she pulled those stupid tricks, Ronnie has been met by fans and the odd few who despise of her performance within the swamp. For a while he relished in it, fame…fame is something everyone yearns for but having to face it every day, the thrill of it has slowly developed into annoyance. Shooing away the inconsiderate ass holes with his left hand, his right still remained on his forehead, as if trying to heal the hangover that was making his head ring like a bell.

Sitting on a bench with a pint of water in his hand, Ronnie fought his mental breakdown, trying to gather what was left of his thoughts. For the first time, Reggie found time to sit within the crowds, there was no excuse now, and their sister was competing in the same event so it became a family day out. Glancing up at the hundreds of blurred faces, worry began to swamp Ronnie’s mind. He’s going to get lost in that crowd. He’s going to drown amongst it. Pounding through his chest, as if trying to break through the boney cage, his heart became uncontrollable. Attacking his face like the tsunami swept across his District, sweat appeared out of thin air on his brow. This isn’t the time to lose it Ronnie. Chucking the water into his face, Ronnie tried his best to gather his normal breathing rhythm as he body lost all of its mechanics. You’re not going to see him again. Gritting his teeth, he slumps off the bench, landing on the ground, unaware of the eyes that found themselves looking in his direction.

Ronnie Cheyne.

Dragging himself from the dusty ground, he walked to the starting line, trying to remove all the thoughts from his mind as he did. Just get over the damn pole and win, forget about the voice.

Another jump. I wasn't having any illusions about winning here. My long jump wasn't a great success and I didn't expect to do any better in the high one. I was just going to have fun again, like I did when running or swimming. I don't think I know any people in here, all the faces look almost the same to me. I think I saw a couple of these people in the other Olympic events, but it doesn't really matter.

The crowds of people and the loud noise which was the reason of frequent and continuous evening headaches I had are no longer a problem for me. I got signed up for so many events, that I'm just simply bored with it all now. I don't think I pay attention to anything around me much, or notice anyone. I just want to get over with it.

It's my turn, so I go and jump, receiving my average results, as usual.

For most of my childhood, all I wanted was to be able to fly. I never believed in wishing on candles, or on pennies, but whenever I saw a shooting star I would do more than whisper my desires to it - I would picture myself as that star, rocketing across the sky, a flaming ball of dazzling glory that other children, just like me, would look up at in adoration and pray to for their dreams to come true. There is an art to feeling lighter than air. I would wait for a strong wind to torrent around the hill above our house, the flavour of the air damp and salty, and lean into to gust, letting it almost pick me off the ground. It was as close as I could get.

Now, standing in the stadium and watching the other contestants hurl themselves over a metal bar, which gets higher and higher until the challengers seem to be committing almost impossible feats, that same dream fills my head. My brother Ronnie's feet have always been as heavy as his mind, but still he manages to clear several bars with nothing more than brute force. A breeze plays with my hair, and any nerves I had watching him and the rest of the Olympians dissipated. I have the forces of nature on my side. Today is the day that I will finally fly.

It was child's play in the decathlon.

I don't think I've slept since that day, no, I'm awake and I'm still awake from all those months ago when it finally hit me that life isn't a walk through the park. 

Neither is competition--I quickly remind myself, but in the case of the high jump, I did make it look easy and I was, seemingly, unbeatable. My eyes close for a split second as I recite a short poem about luck taught by my mother when I first started training.

She said luck was just a legend, but I'm starting to think it's fact and not fiction.

I eye the bar from my starting position, taking note of the height I need to achieve in order to take first position. I'd already won a silver medal, but nothing would compare to the gold; I'd be nothing but a trophy child for my parents to show off.

Cliché perhaps, but I'm starting to think it's not always about the winning.

In retrospect, signing up for an event that involved height when she possessed anything but was probably not the best idea she had ever had.

But it was too late to do anything about that now.

And besides, she was just glad that her chance to compete had finally arrived.

The roster was fairly stacked, consisting of a pair of Cheynes and even a Lyon boy, but that did little to deter her. She had trained to compete with even the most elite of Career families back home, and she wasn't going to let a famous name stop her.

Even if the field of battle was on a track instead of an arena.

Benit wasn’t ready for the high jump. He had never trained before he got to the Olympics four days ago, but he didn’t want that to stop him from trying to secure the gold. He didn’t know if he would be able to hop over the highest bar, but he would try his hardest. He didn’t even care if he collapsed in his bed after, missing any other events that he had that day. He just wanted that first place, excluding all other events he might’ve had. He braced himself for his first jump. He started running up to the pole, and jumped.
