[Day 4] Swimming: 4x100 Freestyle Relay

SWIMMING: 4X100 FREESTYLE RELAY

Welcome to the 4x100 Freestyle Relay event of the third Panem Olympic Games! The swimming pool is located within the aquatics center, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you stretch and warm up with your coaches before you're called to the pool for your race, and remember, make your district proud!

The execution of this event is simple. Feel free to roleplay your character getting ready to begin the race or responding to how their teammates are doing, and then paste the code [*roll=1000+5000] without the asterisks into your post and roll, as you would with a Hunger Games die. This will result in a four-digit number that will correspond to a time, which is read with a decimal point separating the first two and the last two digits (e.g. 5000 is read as 50.00 seconds). In the end, we will add up the scores of everyone on your team to get your total time.

The competitor with the lowest time wins this event. Times for this event will be continually updated on this thread.

After everyone has rolled, feel free to edit your post with your character's reaction if you so desire, but please keep it to one post rather than multiple.

There is NO POSTING ORDER; you may post whenever you please. Keep in mind that this event must be wrapped up by the end of the Olympics Day.

The relay. Not an event she was really looking forward to because she had to depend on three other people in order to get the gold. Katrina would have much rather been able to rely on herself and herself alone to win or lose another event, but there was no helping it now. Next Olympics, she needed to get to the damn sign-ups earlier so she didn’t have to pad her resume with bullshit like this. She almost punched another wall when she recognized one of her teammates as having beat her despite being old as all hell.

“Mayor Perch.” She said through thin lips. She looked at the other two. “I don’t know who the fuck either of you are, but you better be able to keep up.”She readied herself in the starting position and stared daggers at all of them. “I am NOT losing the gold to fuckin district one or two, do you hear me? We’re the only district that has a goddam ocean. If we don’t come in first I will literally drown you all.” She huffed before continuing. “Especially you, Mayor perch.” And then she was off.

4x100 Freestyle Relay

Rachel had always been rather athletic throughout her life. She was also quite the competitive type, so combining the two of them into the Olympic games made it fun for her. The girl scoped out her competition, looking around at the others near her. She didn't know anything about her teammates other than that, one, they were obviously all from District Two, like her, and, two, they all had 'Hammerfell' in their last names.

Being surrounded by teammates that were all from the same family, she knew she was the odd one out. This made Rachel feel a bit pressured, but at the same time, motivated to do all that much better. When it was her turn, she plunged into the water and swam as fast as her body would allow her to physically go.

[Sleepy Fluttershy]

Swimming is not quite my cup of tea, but I guess I like it as long as it doesn't involve punching or beating anyone. It's almost like running, though it's a lot harder because I have to cut through the water to keep moving forward. It feels like crawling to me and it's not really pleasant.

The hard part of the competition is that I'm having teammates again. I'm nowhere near cheerful about that, because it reminds me of messing up in the Beach Volleyball match. If I do this one more time, everyone will probably be mad at me which doesn't sound good at all.

I really do hope the other teams are not as strong as ours. As I look where the district 2 team stands, I notice a familiar face. I suppose it is Odysseus, but he doesn't seem to see me.

Ok, now it's really time to focus on the swim. I dive into the water and for the next seconds there's nothing except for the water splashing all around and my hands and legs working like mad.

Two Hammerfells, a half Hammerfell, and some other person Odysseus had never heard of. That was his team for the swimming relay. He wasn't ready for it because Torka had told him to get out of his life. After the Olympics was over, that was his plan. He wanted to set out and find the Alezander's. He wanted to know more about them, and why he was just a bastard child. But he couldn't allow that to hurt his performance today. Torka and Katarina wouldn't ever let him live it down if a stranger outdid him. Yet that was most of the Olympics. Failing. Odysseus was a failure, and he accepted his fate.

Walking out towards the giant pool, his gaze remained focused on the ground. Winning this was important. It was needed. Yet he wasn't sure if he could perform the way his family needed him to.

The girl took her place, and she went first.

Odysseus watched as she swam. Every fiber of his being quivered with fear as he prepared himself. When she tagged the wall, he jumped from the platform into the pool using his length to his advantage.

And he swam like he never swam before.

Torka Hammerfell

I thought I told Odysseus I never wanted to see him again. Yet here he stands. I guess he is my teammate for this event along with some other person who isn't worthy of standing in my presence. The only person I want to be associated with his Katarina. At least she's a pure blood, and not a bastard. But I guess Odysseus can help out. If we lose, I won't pin it on him. No, I'll pin it on the girl. The girl goes first. I don't pay attention to her time because I'm waiting my turn. Odysseus goes second, and I hope he doesn't screw up like he did in the fencing matches. I beat him, and he knows that, and I won't let him forget it. When he tags the wall, I dive into the water. I have to do better than them, and I will bring my team to the gold. Well maybe me and Katarina. But it's just us. Nobody else.

MAYOR FABIAN PERCH

He'd done shockingly well in his first event, to everyone's surprise - even his own. Not that he was out of shape or lacked the mental fortitude, but it was simply unlikely that he would be able to beat half a dozen athletes in their prime. Yet, he had. He celebrated that evening with the other visiting Mayors and then whipped himself right back into shape for the Day 4 relay. He was starting to wonder if he should have been more ambitious. He could have tried to qualify for another handful of events, all in the name of Four's glory. Perhaps next year, he thought, as he approached the pool.

He'd been rehearsing a pep talk to give his teammates but he found it was wasted effort. He blinked as Katrina Sykes addressed him directly and then turned her hard eyes on Canterbury and Clouse. By the end, he was grinning like a schoolboy. "You might find you caught more flies with honey than vinegar, Miss Sykes. After you," he bowed and away she went, pushing herself and proving the weight of her words.

Fabian loosened his arms, set himself up on the block. The moment her finger tips brushed the wall, he leapt.

"You're fuckin' old, my man."

He found it miraculous that the District had managed to rebuild themselves so fast after the storm. Sure, there'd been help, but the majority of the devastation had remained right at home, collapsed buildings a shrine to the death that they housed inside, swept away under the broom of the Capitol and replaced with a new kind of monument. It was like a bandage, he supposed, hiding everything underneath it. District Four had swept all of its ghosts into the graveyards. And then, it had torn those graveyards apart and built right on top of them.

Lord knows he'd tried to forgot, too. Just sweep away the pain. Christ, like the falling waves of the ocean, sweep away the pain. Low tide.

He'd placed flowers on the grave of his brother this morning, and asked his ghost to wish him luck. The spirit hadn't answered. 

Fabian Perch is the mayor, born in regality and graced with the souls of the dead on his back. He mocks a bow after his opening words, before readjusting and staring the man in the eyes, smirking. "Don't hit the water too hard, old man. It might break your bones or something." Tongue like quicksilver and ambitions like quicksand, he turns to the rest of his teammates. His eyebrow arches at Katrina's words, even more at Fabian's.

"She seems like the type of girl who has fun at parties, yeah?" He says as she takes her position, driving an elbow into Fabian and Clouse's ribs. Not too hard for the former, though, he wouldn't want to break him before he even started. 

But maybe it was a bad idea anyways, because the mayor of District Four hits the water like a tsunami, and then he becomes a rock. He stretches, throwing his arms back and forth. And when the pebble hits the wall, he leaps.

I wake up early today to get ready for the 4x100 freestyle relay. It's the only thing that I signed up for, but only because it was the only swimming event that I could do it for. I only know how to do freestyle I guess I could have done one of the individual free events.. free. Why call it free? Is it really free? Wait. Why didn't i sing up for any individual events? Because I didn't want to. The Olympics are probably the only time where I won't make a food out of myself, and I actually had some swimming lessons way back when, with a few training practices earlier.

After doing my morning routine, I head on over to the pool. The speedo I got feels uncomfortable, but I heard it made you go faster. Hence the name Speedo. My uncomfortable suit doesn't change the burning desire to compete in me. Or maybe it's excitement. I highly doubt it's competitiveness because I've never competed. Whatever it is, it better help me go faster into the pool.

I undress and wave at all my teammates, and then my opponents from 2 and 4. The team from District 4 looks awfully familiar... where'd I see them before? Before I know it, the event has started. Crap, that was fast. I watch as the girl before me goes, nearly forgetting to get onto the block for my turn. I quickly put my googles on and hop on up before she touches the wall. As she does, I pray to Ripred that I didn't leave early to disqualify my team. After I hit the water, my worries turned to trying to finish as fast as I can.

Clouse took a deep breath in as he approached the pool with his teammates. His heart’s pace quickened. He feared that he couldn’t perform to the best of his ability. But he had to do it for the team! He thought back to his brother, who had only competed in two events, and who had been eliminated both times in the first round. Putting on his swim cap as the relay started, Clouse started to pump himself up. He saw his teammates swim in front of him, each one faster than the last. Climbing onto the diving board as his third teammate, Katrina, made her way back on the fourth lap, he noted that she’d completed the laps faster than his other two teammates. The moment her hand met the wall, he dove into the pool, hoping that he could swim even faster than her.
