"I don't like technology, but today my mind has changed"

It started like any other day, but today it felt oddly different. I went to the small bathroom that my family shared, and looked into the mirror. Many people would classify me as handsome, but I think I look average. I mess up my golden blonde hair, and walk out of the bathroom. I suppress the urge to yawn, because my breath probably stinks of fish. I open up our families beaten drawer, and get out a to big blue polo. I slide the polo on, and put on my pants I had on yesterday. I do this routine everyday, look at myself and get dressed. I heard a knock on the door and the voice of my sister Onyx, "Are you decent?" she asked. "Yes" I replied. My sister walked in with her usual yellow t-shirt and jeans. "Mom wants us to take a different route to school" Onyx told me. "Why?" I asked her. "Because some factory leaked toxic fumes the way we usually take, and the peacekeepers are keeping citizens away from their." Onyx replied. "Ok, well let's go." I told her, and we walked out the door.

Today was going to be a usual, normal day. But it turned out to be different. When Onyx opened her eyes, she didn't understand what was happening at first. It was too early and she didn't get what her mother wanted from her. It was Maroon's turn to make breakfast and take the small kids to school, after all. Finally she realised that her mother was asking her and Bruce to take another route to school today. It was not a tragedy, but she was afraid of being late because that way was much longer than the one she was taking before.

She got dressed, piled her books in a bag hurriedly and went to look for her brother. After finding him in the bathroom, she took his hand in a patronising way and walked out into the street. She tried to move quickly to avoid coming late. The sun was already shining bright and the clouds looked like sugar, as always. Her lips twisted into a small smile as they were walking further and further. Finally she decided to say something just to break the silence. "What are you doing after school today?" -she asked, not knowing what else to talk about.

  My sister took my hand, and asked me once we got outside our house, "What are you going to do after school today?" I shrugged my shoulders, wondering what to respond to her question. "Go to a friends house, or I If I find so money on the ground go buy some bread" I replied to her. "Your question was so tedious by the way." I added.

"I know, I just didn't know what to say." she said while frowning. Onyx pulled my hand pushing me toward the path that we were going to take to school today. I really didn't want to go this way, because It was as twice as long as the other way. But I had to ask myself, would you rather get sick and possibly die, or get to school 10 minutes late? I picked get to school late, because who wants to learn anyways. I guess its a privilege, because some families struggle getting their kids into  school. We walked down the rugged path, that smells of rotten wood and beer. Drunk outlaws lay sprawled on the path, presumably passed out from their levels of alcohol. 

-30 Minutes Later- 

Me and Onyx were running down the path now, being chased by drunk people who we accidentally knocked something over, hitting and waking them up. I was so glad that school was only about five minutes away. I tripped, making Onyx fall over with me. "You are so dead when we get out of this Bruce!" Onyx said in a stern hushed whisper. I closed my eyes as a figure of a scruffy man stood over us.

As they were walking on and on, Onyx started to regret they went this way. The further they got, the more empty streets they passed. It was one of the poorest and dirtiest part of the district: abandoned houses, trash and scary people with criminal faces everywhere. She thought that she'd rather take the usual route and breathe in some poisoned air, than walk this creepy place with only her little brother by her side.

Suddenly they discovered a few drunk men lying right in our way. It was quite an unpleasant surprise, but we still had to pass by. However they were woken by the sound of something she or Bruce stepped on and started chasing them without any particular reason. Onyx thought it would be the last day of her life, especially when Bruce stumbled over something and they fell down together. Fortunately, the beastly man standing over them suddenly passed out again, probably because of the amount of alcohol he drank.

They stood up and went to school in silence, a little shocked by what had just happened. When they reached the school, Onyx sighed with relief and could speak again: "I hope you'll have a good day. We can probably go home together, too." She waved her brother goodbye and went to her classroom, still shivering at the thought of what had happened to them.

Bruce; I headed toward my classroom. Thinking about what Onyx said. I got my stuff, and sat down in my seat. Throughout the day, I just was thinking about what happened. Today.  It was really crazy, and I never want to go on that route to school again.  Onyx wish came true. I ditched my friends to walk home with Onyx. To protect her, even though she is 2 years older than me. I wasn't scared, but I think Onyx is scared.  "Are you scared, Onyx?" I asked her. template by chelsey

Onyx Clayton

Onyx spent the rest of the school day enjoying being alive and tried to forget about what happened. The day was wonderful, the sun was shining and the birds were chirping. When she went out of the classroom, she saw Bruce, who was waiting for her to go home together. Onyx thought that, perhaps, it wasn't such a bad idea to go home together, because she was worried that Bruce wouldn't be safe if he went home alone.

"Are you scared, Onyx?" - Bruce asked her as they were walking home. Onyx suddenly realized that he was trying to protect her. It was so nice of him and so touching. But Onyx would never lie, so she answered honestly: "No, I am not. Not even a little." Maybe she should have said that she was afraid of going home alone, but it just felt wrong not to be truthful with her own brother.

"Are you scared, Bruce?" Onyx just said that to say something, because she felt a little awkward after admitting that she was not frightened. She wondered if Bruce wouldn't go home with her if he knew she didn't need anyone's protection before they walked out of the school building.
