District/Area: District 10
Appearance:
Toivo isn't that spectacular apart from being moderately attractive. However, all of that goes out the window when you become an Avox. Like many district civilians, he hold a darker complexion than the strictly Caucasian while still not quite into another tone altogether. For instance, it would be hard to call him of some sort of African descent. He was probably some sort of Hybrid of many different family lines. Who had time to do ancestry reports anymore? Deserter's eyes are olive in colour, which is his favourite trait. He would rather the Capitol take his tongue ten different times than to take away his sharp sight.Personality:
With a symmetrical face and generally neat black hair, it might be hard for a tribute to understand how a well-off boy could have done something treacherous enough to be made into a tongueless servant. There's nothing special about his height or hair, however. Deserter only made it to five feet and eight inches. His hair was curly, long when manageable, and black. Toivo has a scar on his cheek from a forgotten childhood accident that he is determined looks exactly like District 10.
It isn't a wonder that Toivo had been able to work his way into more contact with foreign countries through their imports and exports, when you consider his logical mind. With his parents being fairly talented traders, Toivo picked up on the ability to haggle, diplomat, and barter with people as a second nature. Unfortunately, in the spirit of ancient worldly astrology — information about which he would find very little about even if it were written in contraband book smuggled into the 10th District or the sort — Toivo was born a Libran and it is very well known of them to be justice aware. Like many people, he has learned to mask his emotions as if it were as easy as wearing a masquerade masque. However, his opinions are often hard for him to control. When provoked and with hope, he can be very rash and passionate about a subject. This often helps his bartering. His way of speech could have been called elegant, if it were still in use.History:
Now that Toivo is an Avox, his hope is nonexistent. Like many of the servants, he does his duties to the Capitol in silent solemnity. While many Avoxes either hate the Capitol or at least claim that they were not guilty of their charges, Toivo took full responsibility for them. What use was there in denying something when you were already guilty? Almost uncomfortably quiet even in his demeanor and steps, Toivo has lost much of a will to both live or die. He seems to be caught in an in-between that might out-sour Susie Salmon's. Listless as he is, his eyes are always searching for something unknown.
As previously mentioned, Toivo grew up under two rather successful traders named Taivas and Maa Alas, the former being his father and the latter his mother. The pair had first met by chance, and haggled their way into each other's heart. After having a child, which was possibly more than they could have wanted, they were done in that area. Toivo Alas was to be their only child, their only son. He got through school fairly well, not doing poorly in many classes at large. His real forte however, was out in the real life. There, he was brought to life and was a very excellent trader to be. His father put much trust into him.Codeword: muttations
In fact, his father put too much trust into him.It was not unknown for Toivo to carry packages or shipments to and from the docks to or from their house which was located a bit more inland. The people there knew him, though the Peacekeepers barely tolerated his obvious dislike of their presence. So randomly one day when they had checked the goods Toivo had carried, which were letters that he had secretly smuggled in and out of the country to the daughter of a foreign trader in the bottom of a jar of peaches — luckily the pen he wrote in was strong enough not to erode away too quickly with contact of the sickly sweet preservatives — they jumped at the chance to charge him with anything the could think of.
Toivo's letters spoke of a wish to escape the Hunger Games and they saw it treason of him to speak of such things. They called him a Deserter of the responsibilities and duties of a patriotic life, or something wretched like that, and promptly took him away. Toivo, or Deserter, never again saw his parents or heard from the foreign trader's romantic daughter. While his eyes remain as sharp as ever, they seem desperately so rather than frighteningly observant. Even now he wishes for justice — revenge at the very least.
