Ludvig Miristioma Seventeen | Male | District Eleven |
You're in a better place, I've heard a thousand times
And at least a thousand times I've rejoiced for you
But the reason why I'm broken, the reason why I cry
Is how long must I wait to be with you
And at least a thousand times I've rejoiced for you
But the reason why I'm broken, the reason why I cry
Is how long must I wait to be with you
"Ludvig -"
"I don't want to hear it, Laia." I snap interrupting her. Every second of every single day she's going down my throat trying to get me to follow her ways of life. It's like she doesn't care that our parents are missing. She doesn't care that Iain died in the games. She doesn't care that the rest of us are in danger, and it's starting to devour me. I had the chance to save Iain by volunteering for him, but when the time came, I didn't move. My feet were glued to the ground, and my voice wasn't strong enough to break through the uproar. "Listen to me, Ludvig."
"What's the point?" I ask. "So you can tell me that I'm a horrible person for not saving our cousin? So you can tell me it's my fault ma and pa are gone? So you can tell me that I'm a mistake? That Sage is right?"
"It's not all about you, Ludvig!"
"Never said it was." I shrug my shoulders before turning away. Fighting doesn't solve anything, I know that, but right now she's not the person I want to talk to. Iain would've been sixteen today. Sixteen. Yet he died far too soon. And it is my fault that he's gone.
Biting my lip, I turn around expecting Laia to shout at me some more, but she's gone. My first instinct is to run after her because she is my twin, and I love her more than anything in this world, however, I stand my ground refusing to move to follow her. She's probably gone to get Sage. It's like she cares for him more than she cares for me. I'm of her own flesh and blood, yet she doesn't get it.
"You ruin everything, Ludvig."
My heart leaps into the back of my throat before plummeting against the ground with a deafening thud. Pivoting around, my eyes find Sage standing in front of me. His chest puffed out like he wants to fight, and I can feel my hands balling into tight fists.
"You made her cry, you know."
Of course I did.
A heavy sigh slips past my lips. Butterflies dance rapidly inside my stomach twisting my intestines together -
"And I don't like when people make her cry."
Oh great, here we go again.
"Do you think I made her cry on purpose, Sage? I would never hurt her the way she's hurt -"
"Don't even talk like that. You're a man." He interrupts. "Men aren't supposed to make women cry."
I turn to walk away from him because I don't want to punch him in the face - Laia would hate me more than she already does. One step after another, I'm carrying myself forward with my head slumped forward and my eyes locked on the dirt floor. Ma and Pa fought a lot, but they never put each other down, and once the fight was over, I watched them pick each other up. Why can't it be like that for me and Laia? Where have I gone wrong?
His footsteps echo through my ears as he chases after me. My heart pleads for an escape as I stop dead in my tracks. Pivoting around on the balls of my feet, I stare at him. Glaring in his eyes begging for a fight. I'll knock the living daylights out of him if he tries anything.
"Don't walk away from me." His voice is firm and laced with anger. Blood pools in my cheeks, spots dance before my eyes. "I wasn't finished talking to you."
Rolling my eyes, I turn around and start walking away once more. The door is within sight, and all I have to do is make it through since freedom awaits me on the other side. And once more he's following behind me. His steps are quick only causing me to quicken mine. I don't want to fight. All I want is a chance to honor Iain. A chance to set in front of his grave. A chance to talk to him like he's sitting in front of me, but it'll never happen because he's dead.
My hand reaches for the doorknob -
Thud!
Stars dance before my eyes as I'm thrown off balance. Arms extended out in front of me, I crash against the ground -
Crack!
Tears pool in the corner of my eyes -
"I told you not to walk away from me you stupid idiot!" He shouts. His words are replaced by loud roars echoing through my ears.
I'm going to be sick.
My eyes snap shut as I wrap a hand around my arm. Based on the angle of my arm, it's safe to assume it's broken. It's swelling rapidly right in front of me, and I don't know what to do. Everything is spinning around me as a vile, acidic substance crawls up the back of my throat. Oh how it burns. And I can't stop it from slipping into my mouth and erupting forcefully past my teeth.
Someone gasps behind me, and I can hear the sounds of footsteps moving away from me as water leaks from my eyes staining my dirty cheeks. But soon the footsteps are coming closer and closer, and I'm expecting Sage to appear behind me at any second, but it's not him.
"Ludvig, are you -" Her voice trails off, and I can hear the shock in her voice. I guess she's registered what's happened. "Oh my goodness. Ludvig. I'm so sorry."
She breaks, and I'm breaking with her.
Violent sobs fill the air as she wraps me in a warm embrace, but the sobs aren't from the physical pain. No. It's all the pain and emotions I've been holding in the last several days.
"I miss them, Laia. Iain. Ma. Pa. All of them."
"I know." Her voice is quiet and comforting. "I miss them too." A grim smile twists across my face as she releases the hug.
"Now let's get that arm of your's fixed."
We both laugh because at the end of the day, blood runs thicker than water, and we're a family until the end.
