KILLIAN
The days were leeching sunlight faster than they could resupply their stores of oil. Other than the falling light, the winter had been relatively easy thusfar. They'd managed to frame the house, construct the roof and they nearly had the exterior boarding all in place before the first snow. Those initial flurries had come and gone already and their work had only slowed a little, mostly due to the longer nights. Killian didn't mind; they were ahead of his calculations, and he was sure Katelyn would be pleased. A house became much closer to a home once it had a few beams one could walk around.
It was still sometimes strange to him to think of a home as a building. He couldn't quite imagine a life wherein he lived in one set of four walls. For now, he called the room at the end of a converted barn his own. All of the hired hands they'd found lived there together, many of them bunking down in the hay. He wouldn't have minded, only the architect thought it would be best if he slept apart, put some distance between himself and everyone else. The hierarchy rankled him until he realized that the distance was not because he was the General Manager of the project, but because he was himself - an urban legend and a stranger.
He didn't sleep as well after the realization dawned on him.
It was dusk, the snow gently falling for the second time this winter. He stood at the open door of the barn, desperately trying to block out the smells of dinner at his back. He could eat later, after he'd shown Katelyn around. He wasn't sure when precisely to expect her, or how she'd be traveling. He fidgeting, shifting his weight from side to side, pawing at the scythe badge stitched above his heart. He waited, with warmth at his back and snow slipping past the tip of his nose, because he wanted to show Katelyn a dream come to fruition.
