RACHEL VIOLETTE | 74th HUNGER GAMES | DISTRICT TWO FEMALE
As soon as Rachel had reached the Justice Building, she was beginning to question what she had just done. She had volunteered for the Hunger Games, whereas normally, she had no desire to even watch them. Yes, she had trained a bit throughout her life, but did she really think that she would survive it all? At this point, she was confused. She had volunteered for a girl she didn't even know, and for what? So that she could die instead? No, there was something inside her that had told her to volunteer. Maybe she had a darker side to her.
Rachel entered the room of the Justice Building that the Peacekeepers had escorted her to. Would her family even come to say goodbye, after she just volunteered for what very likely was a death sentence? She was nervous now, but not about the Games. No, those nerves hadn't surfaced yet. Instead, she was worried about what her family would say. Her brothers, ages twelve and ten, were surely thinking she was crazy. With her twelve year old brother, Jake, having had his first reaping this year, he was probably worried enough about himself, and certainly wouldn't have wanted his older sister asking to go in the Games. Marco was only ten, but she was sure he would be nervous about Rachel going into the Games, too.
The door to the room Rachel was in slowly opened, and in came Marco. In all honesty, she was surprised that he was the first one to come in. She thought that he may have been too afraid, or perhaps his sister had changed too much in such a short amount of time for him to handle, but no, he was there. As soon as the ten year old boy entered the room, he embraced his older sister in a hug.
"Rachel, why'd you do it?" he asked her, looking into her eyes with tears forming in his own. Rachel didn't know what to say at first. Then, her parents and other brother, Jake, entered the room. She ended up receiving hugs from each of them, tears in the eyes of all but her father. Her father had been a career, and it almost seemed as if he were proud of her for volunteering, even if he didn't say anything. Rachel turned to Marco again, deciding she should answer his question in the short time they had, even if she didn't quite know the answer herself.
"Marco..." she began, "I want to do this. If I win, I can bring our family riches. We'll have enough money that we'll never have to worry."
She hoped that her answer was convincing enough. There wasn't much time left to say goodbye. Rachel brushed her hair out of her face, and hugged each of her family members one last time, lingering a bit as she hugger her father. He whispered one last thing in her ear.
"I'm proud of you. You can do this. You can come home a victor." he whispered. This almost took Rachel off guard, but she did her best not to let that show. She simply nodded, and promised her family that she'd do her best. Then, the Peacekeepers came to escort her family out. It was time. Rachel Violette was a tribute, and she had asked for it.
