She despises mess. Even as a child, while the other street rats were wallowing in the mud pretending to be monsters she was slowly becoming a real one. They had mothers but they were too busy to keep them from running wild. Too poor and too overworked. Even dressed in rags she held her head high, walking down the main street of the District into the square. A little slip of a girl who used rain water to wash the dirt from her cheeks and ran her fingers through her hair twice a day to keep the tangles away. Peacekeepers would shoo her away, flicking their wrists to send her back to the hell hole of the back streets where she belonged.

She liked them. Most of her peers feared the men and women in white. They were strong, and weren't above smacking a child. Satya liked their clean, crisp uniforms and the way their black boots gleamed in the sun. She would watch them grip their guns, practiced and precise. They were well oiled machines and she wanted to be one. Except no girl from the shacks at the edge of the district was ever going to be permitted into the academy.

But she was clever. That's what her mother always said.

"Too clever for your own good."

She thinks her mother was scared of her. Perhaps, for good reason too.

Satya would sit on the sidewalk, holding onto the piece of clean stationary she had plucked from a trash can behind the Mayor's house. It was a neat square of thick yellow paper. Not yellow from dirt or sweat, but purposefully faded. An artistic choice. And what art it was. Satya merely held it for weeks, unsure what to do with it. She couldn't squander it. This was her special item.

Eventually, she folded it in half. And then again. She spent the day folding her little piece of paper in as many different shapes as possible. She would sit on the curb, a few feet down from the rest of the children and fold her paper. Until one day a boy wrestling in the mud fell down in front of her, splashing mud on her pristine paper. In a flash, Satya was on her feet and her open palm was smacking into the side of the boy's head.

The rest of the children kept their distance after that.

As she grew, Satya's desire for a life that was not her own grew. She took as many odd jobs as she could, saving up so that one day she could walk up to the gates of Academy and present her entrance fee. That she, Satya Symmetra of the back alley slums was going to be clean, and dresses in white, and hold a gun. That she was going to clean up the a country full of filth and crime. They only took you in as an eighteen year old, and year after year she waited through the Reaping holding her breath. Then went back home and counted all her coins. Soon she would think soon I will have everything.

But, wanting everything from the world is awfully greedy.

As a young woman, she grew into her body well. Her ears and nose that had been so large and unsightly as a child finally fit her face. Her hair was long. Thick dark locks that fell down her back that she brushed multiple times a day. Her mother always said she had beautiful eyes. Dark brown like everyone in her family's, but Satya's were always focused, always calculating. As a young girl she would imagine how her dark skin would look while wearing a Peacekeeper's uniform. Crisp white against cool brown. She thought she would look quite nice. Satya always thought she would look the part. Others in her alleyway did too. She held her chin higher than the other children, she kept her posture straight, and her eyes were always watchful.

Her eyes, when not on the people around her, were stuck in her books. Satya craved knowledge in every form she could get her hands on. She got good marks in school, and always tried to be the very best.

She was on the road to success. A perfect student, risen up from the ashes of her youth to bask in the glory of her hard work as an adult. She was seventeen, handsome, clever, and was only two years away from achieving her dream.

Until that night.

It was a night like any other in District Two. A bit chilly if anything. Satya, dressed in a long sleeved nightgown that reached all the way down to her knees, had wrapped herself in one of her mother's hand made quilts and was getting ready to go to bed when she heard something outside. She peered through the window where two figures struggled outside. In the dim light she could make out the uniform she adored so much.

She slipped the blanket from her shoulders and stepped outside, barefoot, prepared to assist this Keeper in fighting crime. The other figure was a man, young and thin. She took a step forward only to see the Peacekeeper slump over to the ground with a groan. The stomach of his white uniform was bleeding red, and while his gloved fingers tried to keep the life in, they soon stilled.

Satya looked up, and saw the criminal- no, the murderer- holding a knife. He looked to her for a moment before bolting.

She couldn't let this happen. She must prove herself.

She knelt beside the dead Peacekeeper, slipping the gun from his holster. The metal was cold against her palms, but she held it steady. She stood, and ran after the suspect. She could hear his footsteps, after all on such a quiet night everyone else was already asleep.

It took only a few blocks of running before she found him kneeling in a corner, holding the knife and crying like a child.

"Satya what are you doing?" he said. He was her age, one of the children she had grown up with. Todd, or Maren or... she didn't even remember his name. "Satya, put that down. I had no choice- Satya drop it-"

He stood up too quickly and that was enough. Her thin finger yanked the trigger back, and that nameless boy was no more. I'd like to tell you Satya was affected by this. That she cried, or that she wondered if she was actually strong enough to take a life.

But there were no tears, and there were no internal struggles. There was a body of a criminal under the cold, hard eye of Satya Symmetra.

Of course, the Peacekeepers didn't see it quite like Satya did.

Murder. Theft of a Peacekeeper's Fire Arm.

Her next birthday was spent in the Detention Center.

Months of sitting in an empty cell can do quite the number on a teenager. Satya rarely spoke after the first month. No matter how many times she said she was trying to do good they never believed her. All that studying, all the good grades, all of her savings- for nothing.

It was for nothing, until Overwatch was formed. Some higher up had gotten a wild hare about reforming young offenders and Satya had been picked.

She would wear her white uniform after all.
